3 Begin your visit to Charming Hamina here! Welcome to the circular town! Did you know that Hamina s circular town plan is extremely rare worldwide? Or that the star-shaped fortification bastions were named after Finnish towns at the time they were built, or that the famous King s Road passes right through the centre of Hamina? That kings, couriers and armies once travelled the Great Coastal Road? The wooden houses in the town centre exude an aura of times gone by, and you may well rub your eyes on meeting a noble lady dressed in a crinoline as you stroll along the streets. Hamina takes you on a memorable journey into the past, but you will not be left cold by the Hamina of today either a thriving garrison and coastal town where there s always something going on. Meet local people at the busy market, or visitors from abroad at one of the many events. Even if the Town Hall clock does tell you it s bedtime, remember that the town gates no longer close for the night and we are always ready to give our guests a warm welcome! 4 Radial streets in the ramparts embrace The old centre of Hamina is a sight in itself. The circular town plan and the star-shaped fortifications around it are a unique entity that never fails to surprise and impress the visitor. You simply cannot get lost in the circular streets. At most, they may make your head spin! It s fun wading through the colourful leaves on the ramparts in autumn. 4

5 The ideal layout of a Renaissance fortified town had at its centre a castle or, say, a square surrounded by monumental buildings. A grid plan was difficult to apply to round fortified towns, so interconnected radial streets were built from a central point or a town square. The aim was to communicate autocracy and centralised governmental authority. (History of Hamina 1) The Reserve Officers School has been training officers since the 1920s. The unusual circular town plan dates from the 1720s. The building of the starshaped fortifications was commanded by General Axel von Löwen, who was inspired by the new bastion defence technique based on mathematics that had spread from Central Europe

6 Legend has it that King Gustavus 111 of Sweden once proposed to Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia at a meeting in Hamina. The Empress replied that she would not accept his proposal until he could give her a proper kiss through a millstone instead of just on her hand. You can try this romantic feat for yourself at the millstone in Kesäpuisto (Summer Park). Hamina has many active history lovers. 6

7 Tales of yesteryear Founded in 1653, Hamina is the oldest town in the Kymenlaakso region of Finland. As you enter Hamina, stop and listen to the 360-yearold town as it whispers its stories. Gazing at the old ramparts or the idyllic wooden houses, you can almost see the soldiers dressed out in the colours of the Imperial Army and the fine ladies in their crinolines and hats. Hamina is a town with an eventful, colourful past, and you can still capture the atmosphere of days gone by in the historic centre, the churches and museums, all close neighbours to one another. And why not relive the past with a role guide to show you the way? The Customs Officer s house is full of personages desiring to hear how the Empress and the King of the Swedes met in Hamina this past summer. Gladly do I show them the chambers through which they passed, accompanied by their lackeys and militiamen, and where they dined on St. Petersburg delicacies off gold plates. 8 On the waves and skerries The sunrays reflect off the waves of the Gulf of Finland. A gentle sea breeze caresses your cheeks and calms your troubled mind. Enjoy the fresh sea air with a trip to the magnificent Hamina islands! The archipelago off the coast of Hamina is dotted with idyllic natural harbours a haven of peace and space. Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park is known for its diverse species of birds and its military history. The main island in the national park, Ulko-Tammio (meaning Outer Tammio) is part of the Hamina archipelago. There, as on many of the other Hamina islands, you will find nature trails an easy way to explore the island s valuable nature. Boaters will find beautiful natural harbours and guest marinas. But you don t need to own a boat to get to the islands. Just hop on a scheduled service boat and enjoy the bracing sea air! The scheduled public boat service operates from Tervasaari to Tammio and Ulko-Tammio in summer. There are about 400 islands off the coast of Hamina. 8

9 Chives are excellent seasoning for summer food. The idyllic Tammio fishing village is the perfect place to spend a beautiful summer s day. It also has a local museum dedicated to life on the island. The park-like recreation ground by the sea at Tervasaari is popular with tourists and townsfolk alike in summer

10 Events and culture The town echoes to drum rolls, tooting trumpets and cheerful chatter. There is always something happening in Hamina, at all times of the year. In addition to small-scale events, Hamina acts host to large ones, too. Some of them are international, and a feeling of excitement pervades the whole town. Meet some of the locals at one of the fairs held five times a year, or make international contacts during the Hamina Tattoo. Many of the events are held in the Hamina Bastion arena. 10 Hamina has a thriving cultural life, and its people really put their hearts into it. Not even a shower of rain can spoil the mood at the summer theatre, and the young circus acrobats are always a delight. Once a year the Lights Night cultural festival in September takes over the whole of the town. Take your pick of the first-class cultural offering there s something for every member of the family!

12 Rural romanticism There is something romantic about hay-making. For centuries the countryside surrounding the town of Hamina has brought prosperity to the local population. The beautiful villages have museums, galleries, exciting activities and farms selling local produce. Be positively surprised, outside the circular centre, too! 12

13 Hamina has a working windmill that pays homage to tradition. The wife and I were sitting by our kitchen garden towards the end of the 1980s. I don t remember the exact year, maybe There we sat, wondering what to do with the empty plot of land. We decided on a badminton court. And we lost no time making it, but we soon realised it was a hopeless place for playing badminton, because there was always a wind. From that we hit on the idea, as a joke, of building a windmill. 14 The best local ski centre of 2012! Uuperinrinteet also has a SnowPark and MiniPark for freestylers! Uuperinrinteet, only 10 km from the centre of Hamina, has 6 slopes and 4 lifts. It caters for both beginners and experts, with a fabulous children s run, easy-to-operate lifts and the steepest slope in Southern Finland. In summer, downhill biking takes the place of skiing. Dare you to go down the Uuperi slope! The Christmas event in the rampart vaults adds a warm glow to winter. 14

15 Hamina in winter Whether you want to be active or to relax, you can do either in Hamina in winter. You will find everything you need close at hand, and the region s forests are fine for skiing and snowshoeing. The old town centre, with its wooden houses, and the breathtakingly beautiful Town Hall with its blanket of snow and twinkling Christmas-tree lights is a magnificent picture to take home with you in your mind. Let the spring sunshine recharge your batteries! The frozen sea lends itself to all sorts of activities. But remember to check that it is thick enough to be safe!

16 Hamina is a dream town for gourmets. The delicious cakes in the cafés just melt in the mouth, and the appetising scents wafting from the restaurants are simply irresistible. Hamina also offers cosy cottages and private accommodation. Sleep well! 16

Gulf of Finland National Park is famous for its many species of bird and its military history. Please note that many of the islands have landing restrictions, particularly when the birds are nesting. Ulko-Tammio, the National Park s main island, belongs to the Hamina archipelago. Majasaari-Nuokot Recreation Area The island group of Majasaari-Nuokot has excellent hiking and fishing at all times of the year. Some 30 of the islands are owned by the City of Hamina. Majasaari is particularly recommended for long-term campers and the Nuokot islands forming a sheltered lagoon for shorter visits. A ferry calls at the eastern shore of Majasaari and there are moorings for visitors on the breakwater. The Nuokot islands also have moorings on a rock and a floating jetty. Kuorsalo The island of Kuorsalo is an ancient landing point and a resting place for sailors heading east. It has several interesting hiking routes that enable the visitor to study the island s biodiversity. Points of interest include some Viking burial mounds, the views from the highest point

27 of the island (Vironvuori), the old pilot station and the cemetery. Visitors may land at the guest harbour on the NE side of the island. Tammio Tammio is Hamina s southernmost island. Originally a fishing village, it is particularly beautiful and well worth a visit. Housed in an old fishing hut is a local museum devoted to life in the archipelago. Visiting boats can tie up on the breakwater built to protect the fishing village of Tammio. A scheduled boat service operates from Tervasaari to Tammio in May September. Ulko-Tammio Ulko-Tammio is the real gem in the Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park. Its spectacular scenery, rocky shoreline and verdant groves are truly impressive. The NW side of the island has a sheltered bay for visiting boats and the E side a beautiful bay and barbecue for visitors. A scheduled boat service operates from Tervasaari to Ulko-Tammio in June and July.
