3 HELSINKI - The World Design Capital 2012 is growing rapidly. Helsinki Helsinki - Smart Choice! Helsinki will be the World Design Capital At the same time it will introduce major urban development projects. Sustainable urban planning and architectural design play key roles in this dynamic hub for international business. Consumer confidence in Finland is higher than the EU average and banks are forecasting faster growth for Finland than expected. This will contribute to a successful Design Capital year for Helsinki. For example, the world-renowned Art and Design City will unite design, media, and technology businesses in the Arabianranta shore district. Another important innovation, the Aalto University, merges economics, art, design, and technology. Design will also be a central element in the new urban developments. The development of shore, port, and railway yard areas will radically alter the city during the next decades. These areas of several hundred hectares, together with other major projects, will create 4.5 million m² of new residential floor area and almost 2.5 million m² of business premises, representing new homes for more than 100,000 people and jobs for tens of thousands. Mr. Hannu Penttilä Deputy Mayor City Planning and Real Estate Tel hannu.penttila@hel.fi Mr. Mikael Nordqvist Head of Real Estate Tel mikael.nordqvist@hel.fi Mr. Nyrki Tuominen Director Business Development Tel nyrki.tuominen@hel.fi
