1 Lake-Sumter Community College Course Syllabus Course / Prefix Number LIT 2120 Course Title: EUROPEAN LITERATURE 1650 TO PRESENT CRN: Credit: 3 Term: Spring 2011 Course Catalog Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the major European writers of the Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth Centuries. The course emphasizes the historical, cultural, intellectual, and social milieu out of which the writers produced the literary works which influence the ideas and values of the Western world today. In addition to written exposition, LIT 2120 includes a substantive unit on oral skills and oral communication. Prerequisites: C OR HIGHER IN ENC 1102 Textbook and Other Course Materials: Technology and Online Computer Access Requirements: Course Objectives: (what the course will do) The Norton Anthology of Western Literature Volume 2, 8th Edition The Little, Brown Compact Handbook, 7th Edition (recommended) Papers must be written using Word 2003/2007/2010; online research required. PowerPoint is recommended for the oral presentation. 1. To examine the historical, political, cultural, and personal contexts surrounding a writer s works and manifested within those works. 2. To examine the characteristics of Seventeenth, Eighteenth, and Nineteenth Century fiction. 3. To develop an awareness of the complex interplay among divergent voices in literature, discovering relationships among the literary past and present. 4. To recognize and understand literary conventions and themes within these works and to become better readers of literature. 1

2 5. To develop skills in analysis, interpretation, and comparison of text and authors work. 6. To think critically about the literature using several frameworks and to articulate responses, interpretations, and arguments in writing. 7. To increase knowledge of and practice with research techniques and the use of MLA documentation. 8. To increase skills in oral communication. OUTCOMES: To demonstrate analytical thinking skills with the ability to conduct close readings and to interpret and analyze passages of literature. To demonstrate the ability to select appropriate academic sources of literary criticism and to incorporate literary theory into critical analysis essays based on literature employing an accepted academic documentation system. To write an essay that uses critical analysis and interpretation which illustrates college-level language and communication skills. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Assessed in this Course: (what the students take with them beyond this course) To identify and discuss, major periods, authors, themes and works in literature. To recognize the importance of planning and creating projects in a timely manner to meet both a list of criteria and a deadline. COMPETENCIES: Read about and identify intercultural experiences in essays and literature, learning from & synthesizing the information Apply basic principles of critical analysis in the development of a coherent and unified argument. Write formal research paper(s) utilizing proper MLA Style for format & documentation.utilize academically accepted resources in the creation of research project(s). Write & edit essays that are free of surface issues, including grammar, spelling, & punctuation issue. Write & edit essays that employ accepted Standard English, use appropriate connotation/denotation, adopt an academic level of formality, and avoid clichés, jargon, slang, etc. Understand and apply critical reading skills in responding to and critically analyzing written text. 2

3 Utilize appropriate modes of rhetorical development, i.e. analysis and argument and apply literary theory in written assignments. Use the writing process to follow through a major research project: choosing an appropriate topic, formulating a valid thesis, outlining a project, gathering resources, producing the paper/project, revising it thoroughly, & proofreading it effectively. Academic Integrity: The successful functioning of the academic community demands honesty, which is the basis of respect for both ideas and persons. In the academic community, there is an ongoing assumption of academic integrity at all levels. There is the expectation that work will be independently thoughtful and responsible as to its sources of information and inspiration. Honesty is an appropriate consideration in other ways as well, including but not limited to the responsible use of library resources, responsible conduct in examinations, and the responsible use of the Internet. Privacy Policy (FERPA): The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student s education records. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Attendance / Withdrawal Policies: If for any reason a student decides to discontinue class attendance, it is his or her responsibility to withdraw from class. Withdrawal forms are available at the main office. Failure to withdraw properly will result in a failing grade for the course. Students may miss one seated class without penalty. Any further absences will affect a student s final average. Excessive lateness to the seated classes will also affect the final average. Students missing more than one of the seated classes this term will lose twenty points off their final average for each additional absence. Students arriving late to class more than four times will lose five points off the final average for each additional late arrival. 3

4 Withdrawal Deadline: March 25, 2011 Unit Essays 400 points Class Work 300 points Oral Presentation 200 points Class Participation 100 points Essays Two of the three unit essays (200 points each) must be completed. All essays are to be turned in at a specific time which is listed on the assignment sheet. Late essays will lose 5% credit for each day after the deadline. This includes weekends, holidays, and non-class days. Methods of Evaluation: Class Work Students will be also be expected to complete short individual assignments during class hours and/or as homework. Periodically throughout the term, students will organize themselves into small groups and work together on assignments. Members of a particular group will be expected to divide up the work themselves, and all members will receive the same grade. Oral Presentation Students will give a minute presentation on a given author and his/her work at some point in the term. The presentation will require research and an outline to be handed in to me. Oral presentations must be given the date assigned. Students will not be allowed to make presentations up, except in the direst of emergencies. Class Participation Proper participation is defined as arriving for class on time and prepared, appearing interested in class lectures and activities, taking part in class discussions, treating other students with courtesy and respect, and in general behaving in a mature, civilized manner. Participation also involves showing up with the appropriate supplies: white ruled notebook paper, pens with dark blue or black ink, and the required textbooks. Students who do not show up with these supplies will find themselves at an extreme disadvantage with class assignments. 5 Classroom Rules and Policies: Assignments must be submitted in the assigned format. All essays must be written using Word 2003/2007/2010. Quizzes and class assignments must be neatly handwritten on white ruled notebook paper, in black or dark blue ink. No pencil. Assignments not meeting this criteria will receive no credit. Students must keep a copy of each out-of-class assignment. Unless assigned as group work, all assignments must be completed individually. Students discovered plagiarizing an essay will fail with no opportunity to rewrite. Students are to show respect for others during class discussion. Each student is expected to participate in class discussion in a responsible manner. Respect and concern for other students will be maintained at all times. No rude behavior of any kind will be tolerated. Students are to conduct private business outside of class. Students should reserve bathroom trips for before and after class. Cell phones and other electronic devices are to be turned off prior to the beginning of class. Use of these during class will affect a student s class participation grade.
