They shall be manufactured from materials which effectively resist corrosion in any salt, industrial or moisture laden atmosphere encountered on site. They shall be installed so as not to induce electrolytic action either with the cladding or with the structural steel framing Gutters Where gutters are fitted, they shall allow for thermal movement in their length by providing approved expansion joints, including ends, with due allowance for shrinkage/expansion and deflection of supporting members. 5. Workmanship 5.1 General Carry out the whole of the cladding plumbing and leave sound and watertight on completion. Set up gutters to line and fall to outlets. Make up gutters, downpipes, flashings, etc in longest lengths practicable. Short off-cuts will not be permitted. Wherever possible cladding plumbing shall be shop fabricated. Fix gutters and flashings to permit thermal movement to occur in their full lengths, including ends, and with due allowance for shrinkage and deflection of structural members. DOCS v4 6

9 5.2 Fixing Roof Sheeting Fix metal sheeting to framing detailed in accordance with Drawings and as recommended by the manufacturer including accessories for a weatherproof covering. Fix sheets and lay true to line and fall to eaves Where sheets feed into gutters form downturn lips in troughs with special tools. Sheets shall extend a minimum of 50mm into gutters. Stop-ending at tops of sheets where required shall be carried out with special tools and the ears formed at the ends shall be dressed flat. Frequency and type of fasteners shall be strictly in accordance with the sheeting manufacturer s recommendations and consistent with the requirements of Section 3.10 of this Specification. 5.3 Wall Sheeting Fix metal sheeting to framing details in accordance with the drawings and as recommended by the manufacturer including accessories for a weatherproof covering. Fixings shall be as specified for corrugated roof sheeting. 5.4 Penetrations Neatly form holes in sheets for all penetrations, with lipped hole of neat dimensions. Spigot and soakers shall be sealed and riveted to underside of roof decking. Soldering will not be permitted to Zincalume steel sheet. Cut back ribs as necessary and seal and cap to make watertight. Take particular care that sufficient allowance is made around penetrations for movement between the roof decking and the item penetrating the roof. Ribs on either side of the penetration may require flattening and sealing locally to allow adequate water passage around the upstand to the penetration. Ensure there is adequate soaker and upstand height on the upper side with a minimum of 150mm. 5.5 Electrolytic Corrosion Ensure that electrolytic corrosive action is prevented by physically separating electrolytically dissimilar materials and by avoiding puncturing and breaking down of surface finishes. Fixings of metal shall be with materials that are compatible with the metal to be fixed. Unless otherwise specified, flashings shall be of the same material as the metal being flashed. Where galvanised metals of zinc are in contact with any metal surfaces, including galvanised metal, unless fully sweated together, completely separate such surfaces by a full coat of Botanite to equal bitumen based paint. 5.6 Protection of Metals Where zinc coated or galvanised metals would otherwise be in contact, except where the two surfaces are fully sweated together, they shall be coated with bitumen paint, including surfaces to be concealed and items to be built in but excluding only inaccessible inside surface of items such as downpipes. Where aluminium or GSS or Zincalume sheet is built into masonry or in contact with mortar, coat contact surface with epoxy tar paint to give a thickness of 0.4mm. DOCS v4 7

10 5.7 Jointing of Galvanised Sheet Steel Solder shall be 60 tin/40 lead used with a non corrosive flux. Materials shall be thoroughly clean and joints lapped 20mm minimum riveted and fully sweated. Where girths exceed 300mm joints shall be lapped 40mm with staggered rivets at 30mm maximum centres and fully sweated. Remove residual flux from completed joint. 5.8 Jointing of Zincalume Steel Sheeting All joints shall be weathertight. 5.9 Daily Cleaning Roof decking is to be swept clean of metal particles, filings, off cuts, etc at the completion of each day s work of the roof decking or roof plumbing. No staining of the decking will be accepted Responsibility for Sub-Structures The Contractor shall ensure that Sub-contractors performing work specified in this contract shall, upon commencing the work, be deemed to have accepted without reservation that the entire substructure upon which the materials and finishes are applied and the edges up to which they finish are suitable for that purpose. No subsequent claim as to the suitability or otherwise of the sub-structure, edges and finishes will be considered by the Superintendent. 6. Detailed Instructions 6.1 Rainwater Sumps Provide rainwater sumps at heads of downpipes fabricated from 0.6mm Zincalume riveted and sealed at joints with connection to suit downpipes specified and shown. Form overflows in heads to shape and size shown. Provide approved galvanised wire cages within rainwater head over outlet. 6.2 Sheet Zinc Under Flashing Sheet zinc shall be used as under flashings to ridge and hip cappings and roof penetrations. 6.3 Flashings Generally Roof and wall flashings, trims, cappings, corner moulds, barges, special profiled moulds, etc shall be fabricated from Zincalume or Colorbond to suit the roof and wall finish and of 0.6mm (BMT) thickness. Fix flashings shown, specified and necessary to render the whole of the roof watertight on completion. Where joints occur other than for expansion, lap rivet and seal to the manufacturer s instructions. Great care is to be taken to avoid physical damage to sheet metal. Flashings are to be inspected by the Superintendent before closing up. 6.4 Ridge Cappings To be a continuous ridge capping piece riveted and sealed at joints. Cut out for ribs in roof sheeting and fold down ends, fix down to roof ribs. Prior to installation install roof sheet sealing strip. DOCS v4 8

11 6.5 Collar Flashings These to be soldered (for GSS) and sealed (for Zincalume) or Colorbond to pipes, etc that penetrate roofing. Size of collar flashing to allow adequate waterproofing and thermal movement in roof and pipes and to cover roof upstands by a minimum of 100mm. 6.6 Roof Upstands To roof penetrations for pipes, ridgelights, mechanical equipment, etc provide upstands as follows: To pipes minimum 100mm high To ridgelights height to match roof sheeting ribs To roof fans 150mm high Such upstands, secret gutters, soakers, etc are to be lapped, riveted and sealed to the roof sheeting. 6.7 Roof and Wall Fans and Ducts To the top and bottom of those openings where shown on the drawings, the ribs are to be cut back approximately 200mm, capped, sealed, etc to provide drainage around these openings, ready for fan installation. To support these sections of the cladding where the ribs have been cut back and similarly where ridgelights occur within approximately 200mm of these fans, allow to supply two layers of 19mm marine plywood below sheeting, spanning between trimmer or purlins and fixed to 75mm x 50mm timber plates bolted to the purlins or trimmer as detailed. 6.8 Special Items Refer to the detailed drawings for these items which may include specially folded cappings, barges, moulds, trims, flashings and stop ends. Particular care is to be taken when these items are fabricated as machine bending and folding is required to give sharp and straight lines. Where cappings, etc end at the perimeter of the roof sheeting, these to be stop ended, and where raw edges could be exposed to view allow for an extra fold to return this exposed edge. 7. Completion 7.1 Checking of Cladding, Gutters and Downpipes Test cladding, gutters and downpipes with water in the presence of the Superintendent and immediately rectify any leaks, etc. 7.2 Cleaning Up Clean and remove debris, droppings, stains, etc from cladding, gutters, downpipes and flashings.
