1 Cozy-Up E-Reader Cover Keep your Kindle, Nook, ipad, or other e-reader safe and scratch-free with this handy (and oh-so-stylish) e-reader cover. Fabulous for all styles and sizes of e-readers and tablets, this cover features pockets for all your needs and elastic to hold everything snugly in place. Project Needs & Notes - 3/8 yard print sturdy fabric, such as denim, twill or lightweight canvas (for outer cover) - 3/8 yard print sturdy fabric, such as denim, twill or lightweight canvas (for pockets) - Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer - Air-erase pen for marking - 20" length of 1 1/4" wide knit elastic - Cardboard for lining - Extra-loft batting - Snap and snap tool - Craft knife and cutting pad - Masking tape - Needle and thread for some hand sewing Designs used in this tutorial include E6305, Cameo and E6306, Feather. Begin by measuring the height, width, and thickness of the e-reader. This tutorial uses an ipad Mini, which is 8" high x 5.5" wide x.375" thick. This project was featured in the following: Christmas Gift Guide Lookbook To prepare the fabric for the front of the outer cover, take the height and width and add 1 1/2" to each for seam allowances. Using these dimensions, draw a rectangle on the fabric. Leave a couple of inches of excess fabric around the shape. A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool to plan where to stitch. Print a template of the design from your embroidery software. If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use. Position the designs on the fabric how you want them. Make sure there is at least 1" of space between the designs and the edges of the fabric. Using an air-erase pen (or other marking tool), mark the center point of the design on the fabric, as well as the horizontal and vertical axis lines.

3 Remove the templates and draw lines to connect the marks. These lines will be used for hooping. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, lining up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the first design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric and embroider the design. Repeat the hooping and embroidering process for the other design. After embroidering, cut out the rectangle shape.

4 Measure and mark the center of the right side of the fabric. Measure and mark in 1" at the center point. Using a snap tool, add the bottom portion of a snap at this mark. Trim away the excess stabilizer on the back of the embroidery and the snap. To prepare the fabric for the spine of the cover, take the thickness measurement and add 1/2" for allowances. Cut a piece of fabric using this measurement and the final height measurement used for the front cover fabric. Align the spine fabric along the left side of the embroidered front cover fabric with right sides facing. Pin in place. Sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge. Press the seam with an iron.

5 To prepare the fabric for the back of the outer cover, cut a piece of fabric to the same dimensions used for the front cover fabric. Align the back fabric with the spine fabric, right sides facing. Pin in place. Sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge only. Press with an iron, then top stitch a 1/8" seam along the inside of each spine seam. Next, prepare the fabric for the inner pockets. For the large inner pocket, cut a piece of fabric 6" wide by your final height measurement. Fold one of the long sides over 1/2" and press. Fold the fabric over another 1/2" and press. Sew a seam along the inner edge of the fold. For the small inner pocket, cut a piece of fabric 5" wide by the final height measurement. Fold, press, and sew a seam along the inner edge of the folds just as you did with the large pocket. Align the small pocket on top of the large pocket, right sides facing up, with the raw long edges aligned. Pin in place. Measure and mark the center of each side. Draw a line connecting the marks

6 on the small pocket fabric. Sew a seam along the line to create two compartments on the small pocket. To prepare the fabric for the left side of the inner cover, cut a piece of fabric using the final height and width measurements. Align the assembled pockets on the left edge of the inner cover fabric. Pin in place, and sew a 1/8" seam along the outer edges of the pockets to tack them in place. To prepare the fabric for the spine of the inner cover, cut another piece of fabric to the same dimensions you did for the outer cover. Align the spine fabric with the right edge of the left inner cover, with right sides facing. Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge. Press the seam with an iron.

7 To prepare the fabric for the right side of the inner cover, cut a piece of fabric using the final height and width measurements. Cut four 5" lengths of 1 1/4" wide knit elastic. Lay the elastic diagonally across the fabric at each corner leaving about 1" of fabric at the corner. Pin the elastic in the center to hold it in place, then, gently pull the elastic at each end and pin in place. This creates a bit of tension in the elastic which will hold the e-reader securely in place. Doing this will cause the fabric to pucker a bit -- this is ok. Be sure to smooth the fabric flat later on when pinning it to the other layers. Tack the elastic in place at each end with a 1/8" seam. Trim off the excess elastic leaving about 1/4" at each seam.

8 Align the left side/spine section with the left edge of the right side/elastic inner cover piece. Pin in place. Sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge only. Press the back seam towards the center of the spine fabric and top stitch along each seam of the spine. To prepare the fabric for the snap strap, cut a piece of fabric 3 1/2" x 3". Fold the long edges in 1/2" to the wrong side and press. Then, fold in one of the short edges 1/2" to the wrong side and press.

9 Bring the long folded edges together and press. Sew a 1/4" seam along the folded edges. Add the outer "button" section of the snap about 1/2" from the short folded end of the strap. Align the assembled outer cover on top of the assembled inner cover with right sides facing. The embroidered outer front cover should be aligned with the left pocket side of the inner cover. Measure and mark the center of the right side of the inner cover and pin the strap at the mark, with the strap facing to the inside of the fabric and the "button" side of the snap facing up. Leave about 1/4" of the raw end of the strap extending out past the edge of the fabric. Pin all the layers in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the side and top edges only -- leave the

10 entire bottom edge open for turning. Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams. Sew a seam along the outer edges of the spine starting at the top edge of the cover and ending about 1" from the bottom edge. To prepare the inner cardboard linings, take your final measurements and subtract 1" from both. Cut cardboard to those dimensions. Spray the pieces with temporary adhesive. Smooth extra-loft batting on top, and trim off the excess. To finish off the edges, wrap strips of masking tape around each side of the cardboard pieces.

11 Insert the cardboard in-between the layers of fabric at the bottom of the cover with the batting side facing up. Then, fold the fabric of the opening in 1/4" and hand sew the opening closed with needle and thread. This cozy cover is a terrific way to keep your e-reader safe and sound. Use the elastic to hold your reader in place; handy pocket provide extra storage space.
