1 VPN Detailed instructions for installing the AnyConnect Security Mobile client on various devices may be found at: Installing vsphere at Home vsphere Client is available for you to install on your home computers for academic use. 1. Using AnyConnect, make a vpn connection with NKU. Instructions for initiating the connection may be found at: 2. In your web browser, go to the NKU vsphere Center 3. Accept the SSL certificate to allow the untrusted connection to continue.

3 4. Click on the "Download vsphere client" link. 5. Run the downloaded executable and follow the prompts to install it.

7 6. A launch shortcut icon will appear on your desktop. Finding your VM in vsphere Client 1. Start vsphere Client by double-clicking on its icon or by selecting it from the Start menu. When it brings up a login window, set the hostname to coevcenter1.hh.nku.edu, then login with your NKU Windows user account and password.

8 vsphere should bring up with a window that looks like the one below.

9 Click on VMs and Templates in this window to bring up a list. Expand folders as necessary and select your VM from the list.

10 Start your VM by clicking yes on the reboot pop-up. The Summary tab will show the status and resources used by your machine. It will also list the IP address of your machine, which you can use to access your VM directly without vsphere if it is running an ssh server or web server. The root password appears in the Annotations section of the Summary tab.

11 The Console tab provides a graphical console through which you can login to your VM and use it. In the example below, the user is already logged in and has started a Gnome Terminal application, in which the ifconfig command was just executed.

12 To access the VM via ssh (recommended), open the Putty client and enter the IP address of your VM.

13 Please shut down your VM when you are finished. Web Interface VM Connection To establish a web interface connection open a browser and enter Select the Log in to vsphere Web Client option.

14 Dismiss the welcome page, you may choose to prevent it from opening on startup of future sessions.

15 Click on and open the folders in the left pane of the vcenter Management window until you find your VM. Power on your VM by clicking the green arrow in the tool bar. Make note of the IP address of your VM and the root/administrator password located on the Summary tab. Once you have powered on your VM you may close the interface. Remote Desktop Connection to a Windows VM Be sure your Windows VM has remote desktop enabled. You can do this by logging on to the VM with vsphere client once. Power on your VM using the power button on the upper left of the vsphere Client window. Make note of the IP address and administrator password on the Summary tab page. Click on the console tab.

16 To get to the configuration page, you can right-click the Computer entry of the Start menu and choose properties.

17 Next click the Remote Settings link on the left hand side of the window. Select Allow Remote Assistance Connections to this computer and Allow Connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)

18 In subsequent sessions you may start the VM with the web interface, find the IP address and password, then connect with Terminal Server Client. Remote Desktop Client for Windows On your Ubuntu installation choose Terminal Server Client from the Applications menu. A new window will open. Enter the IP address of your remote Windows VM. Enter Administrator in the username field and the administrator s password from the summary tab of the vsphere Client page or the Web interface. Click Connect. The desktop of your Windows VM will appear.

19 Remote Desktop Connection to a Centos VM To enable the VNC connection with Centos you will need to connect via vsphere Client for your first session. Power on your VM and make note of the VM s IP address and root password located on the Summary tab page. Click on the Console tab and select System Preferences Remote Desktop.

20 In the Remote Desktop Preferences window select Allow others to view your desktop, Allow others to control your desktop and Configure network automatically to accept connections. You may also choose to select Require the user to enter this password and enter a password of your choosing in the appropriate field.

21 Now that the running client has been configured you may choose to close the window. Future sessions may be started by powering the VM on through the Web Interface. Open the Applications menu of the Ubuntu desktop and select Remote Desktop Viewer. Click on the Connect button. Select VNC as the Protocol and enter the IP of your Centos VM along with port number Click Connect. Your VM remote desktop screen will appear on the Ubuntu desktop. If you chose the Require user to enter this password option, the user will be prompted to enter the password you selected.

22 To exit the remote desktop click the area outside the remote screen and the close connection option will appear.
