1 Page - 1 Creating the Circus Clown Animation Applications: MS Power Point, Windows Movie Maker, Windows XP Operating System 1. Create the following slides: a. Title b. Audience 2. Create the following objects: a. Spotlight with juggling balls b. Clown on roller skate See the CTEC4 Resources webpage for more information: The next step in the animation process is to convert the Power Point slides into.png (Portable Network Graphics) format, and then import these images into Windows Movie Maker. 3. Create a folder on your desktop and name it Circus Animation. 4. Download your Power Point slides to the computer s desktop. Do not open and edit them while the files are located in your ! a. Open and find the Circus Animation Power Point file. b. Download > Save (desktop) > minimize your > Open the PPT file on your desktop. c. Convert the individual Power Point slides to.png files by doing the following steps: i. File > Save as. The SAVE AS window will open. ii. In the bottom drop-down menu, scroll to find PNG.

2 Page - 2 iii. Click SAVE. iv. Save EVERY SLIDE when prompted. v. Do not press ESCAPE while the program is converting your slides. vi. You will see a message that will tell you the conversion is complete and the location (usually your desktop) where the PNGs are stored. vii. Close Power Point. 5. The next step is to launch Windows Movie Maker. a. Start > Programs > Windows Movie Maker Menus and commands Collections (work area) Video playback Storyboard and Timeline Views

3 Page From the top menu, select File > Import into Collections. 7. Navigate to the location on your desktop where your.pngs are stored. 8. Click inside the area where the.pngs are visible to activate that window. Select all.png files using the ctrl/a keyboard shortcut. 9. Click Import. 10. Check your work. The.PNGs should now populate the Collections part of the Winodws Movie Maker interface.

4 Page The next step is to change the timing of the slides. The default timing is five seconds per slide, which is much too slow for an animation. a. Select all PNGs in the Collections area (ctrl/a). b. In the top menu, select Tools > Options > Advanced. Click the down arrow to change the Picture Duration from 5 seconds to If Windows Movie Maker is already set to 0.125, don t change the settings. Click OK to close. 12. Select all the slides in Collections again (ctrl/a). Grab any slide (it won t matter which one if they re all selected) and drag it down to the storyboard. 13. The storyboard will populate with the PNGs. 14. Check the timing in the playback window. It should say it is anywhere from 5 15 seconds. If it says MINUTES, then delete the slides from the storyboard, go back and redo the timing in Step #10.

5 Page Play the video to determine the timing is correct. 16. Go to the first slide (title slide that says Circus Clown). a. Right click and select Video Effects. 17. In the window that opens, scroll down to Slow Down, Half. 18. Click Add (as many times as you think is necessary to slow down the slide. I choose three). Click Ok. 19. Play the movie again. 20. Adjust individual slides if the timing is too fast or slow by repeating Steps 15a The next step add Credit Slides. a. In the Menus and Commands section, select #2 Make Title or Credits. b. Select add credits to the end of the movie.

6 Page Enter Special thanks to a. Fill in the remaining lines with topics such as: i. Music references ii. Names of people you d like to thank b. Click Done, add title to movie. 23. In the Menu and Commands section #1, select Insert Audio or Music. You will insert your own audio clips from Power Point. a. Open Power Point. b. Use the Clip Art menu to search for two audio clips: i. circus music ii. people clapping or cheering. c. After you have selected two audio clips will be sufficient, right-click, copy and paste them to the folder on the computer s desktop.

7 Page - 7 d. Right-click and rename the audio clips with user-friendly terms. e. In Windows Movie Maker, under Section Capture Video, select Import Audio or Video. Navigate to the location of your music clips. Select them (shift-click to get both). The music clips will appear in Collections. You may need to scroll up or down to find them. 24. Change the view from Storyboard to Timeline. Notice the blue play head. Moving it back and forth is called scrubbing. Scrub the blue playhead all the way to the left side of the timeline. 25. Drag the clapping audio clip down to the timeline.

8 Page Drag down the circus music. 27. Drag down another occurrence of the Clapping audio clip at the end. 28. Play the video and listen to the audio clip and watch the timing of the video. You will need to adjust the timing of the Circus Clown Slide so that it plays the same length as the audio clip. You can also trim the audio clip by hovering over the end of the clip until a red arrow appears. Click and drag the red arrow to trim the clip.

9 Page Go back to storyboard mode. Right-click on the individual slides to speed up or slow down the slides as needed to fit the audio clips. Keep checking your work and make adjustments, as needed. Zoom in and out to get a closer look at the timeline. 30. In the example below, notice that I dragged the Circus Music audio clip to the left so it begins immediately after the clapping stops. Next, I trimmed (cropped) the music because it was too long. Then I added more audio clips to play until the end of the movie. 31. Right click on the last audio clip and select FADE OUT. 32. Save as Project File to the folder on your desktop. File > Save as Project.

10 Page - 10 (Notice that the file has a.mswmm file extension. This means Microsoft Windows Movie Maker and indicates that it is a project file. This file is INCOMPLETE. You must save the project as a movie file.) 33. Save as Movie File to the folder on your desktop. File > Save as Movie. (Keep the default settings to save to My Computer. Click Next).

11 Page - 11 (Enter a file name for your movie. Navigate [browse] to the location of the Circus Animation folder on your computer s desktop. Click Next). (Click Next)

13 Page - 13 Compressing Your Folder 1. Make sure all of your files are saved to the folder. a. Power Point presentation b..png files c. Audio clips d. Project file (the one with the.mswmm extension) e. Movie file (the one with the.wmv extension) 2. Right-click on the folder. 3. Select SEND TO > COMPRESSED FOLDER a. The computer will compress the folder and put a zipper icon on it. 4. Attach this compressed folder to your and send it yourself.
