2 Welcome to the UCL Institute of Education Short Courses We are delighted to introduce short courses at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). The IOE was founded in Today it is known all over the world for its exceptional work in the field. In 2015 it was named number one for education in the QS University Subject Rankings. In December 2014 the IOE became a faculty of UCL. The IOE aims to lead thinking, practice and innovation in education and social sciences, by applying the latest research evidence to inform practice. Our mission is to share and exchange knowledge by being engaged with the wider world to change it for the better. Each year we run tailor-made courses for groups seeking to enhance their knowledge in education and social sciences. Our courses cater for professionals from many different fields including policy makers, academics, researchers, system leaders, school and college leaders and practitioners. Our aim is to integrate our education, research, innovation and enterprise for the long-term benefit of humanity. 3 Who should undertake short courses? Short courses can be tailor made for many different professional groups. The people who would benefit are those working in a professional capacity at any stage of their career, who want to enhance their knowledge and skills in education and social sciences and learn more about the UK education system. This might be teachers, school and college leaders, policy makers, system leaders, central and local government officials, researchers and academics. Participants come to the Institute of Education from all over the world from all fields in the sector, including China, Japan, North and South America, Europe, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Korea. Our clients benefit because our custom-made programmes are led by top academics and they are devised to meet their specific objectives. The IOE is a great place to learn, and to experience everything a world-class university has to offer. Furthermore it is located in historic Bloomsbury in the centre of London with its beautiful Georgian houses and celebrated garden squares, close to many of the capital s most famous attractions. An unbeatable location London is one of the world s greatest cities, and you will benefit from the IOE s location at its heart. Our campus is situated in a quiet and charming corner of the city known as Bloomsbury, close to Russell Square, an area with a rich literary history and considered to be the intellectual and cultural centre of London. The British Museum, repository for some of the most important historical artefacts on the planet, and the British Library, whose collection includes over 150 million items, are both close by. Beyond Bloomsbury, the famous West End is a major attraction with its theatres, restaurants, galleries, bars and shops. The historic City of London is nearby too, and beyond it, the trendy East End. Many public parks, garden squares, markets and museums are easily accessible via public transport. Our transport links are enviable. We are directly connected to three of London s main airports: London Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. And exploring the UK is easy: national rail links at Euston and Kings Cross are within walking distance, and all of Europe is accessible from St Pancras International Station, with direct trains to Paris, Brussels and beyond.

4 Our wide range of programmes The short courses team can provide off-the-shelf or bespoke programmes to meet the needs of your group, giving a UK or international perspective on your chosen topics. Our programmes cater for many audiences and can cover numerous and varied different subjects, for example: systematic reviews for policy makers improving leadership of whole education systems, schools, colleges and teams teaching in higher education leadership in higher education child development improving school and college teaching learning across districts, schools and subjects exploiting digital technology to enhance teaching and learning cognitive psychology effective early years education design of research studies data analysis and much more. One area of expertise is special educational needs. We offer bespoke programmes in subjects such as dyslexia, autism, sensory and physical impairments, leading and managing Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in the school setting and the education of children in care. These are delivered by our Special Educational Needs Joint Initiative for Training Centre (SENJIT) which has a 25 year track record in delivering evidence-informed short courses and accredited postgraduate training in SEND in the UK and internationally. One of SENJIT s most popular programmes at present, delivered in 70 schools over the past two years, is: Maximising the Impact of Teaching Assistants (MITA) school development project. Based on the influential research led by Professor Peter Blatchford, the programme focuses on the successful deployment of support staff in schools. This school improvement course aims to improve outcomes for pupils by working with school leaders to help them get best value from their teaching assistants. Feedback from participants has been very positive.

5 Another area of expertise is the London Centre for Leadership in Learning (LCLL) which offers a wide range of professional development programmes for school leaders at different stages of their careers. Our cutting edge research, together with our close collaboration with schools ensures our programmes keep pace with current policy and practice. We also deliver the UK s National College for Teaching and Leadership qualifications for middle leaders, aspiring head teachers and senior leaders. International short course versions of all these programmes are available and can be delivered in London, internationally and/ or online. 8 5 Discover Europe s largest education library The Newsam Library at the IOE is regarded as one of the finest education research centres in the world. It contains a vast collection of books, journals and other resources designed to support and enhance the studies of our students and staff. In December 2014 the archive was awarded National Archive Accreditation status. Only two other universities in the UK have achieved this status, and the IOE is the first institution in London.
