Provision for staff/students/visitors who are unable to selfevacuate is the responsibility of the organiser of the class/lecture/event/meeting. 5 Disabled Access Guide for the Flo,Wave building. This building is designed for, or has been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. The Flo,Wave facility enables the simulation of various open water conditions quickly and at large scales. Its circular 25-metre pool is able to simulate combinations of waves of up to 28 metres high and currents up to twelve knots at up to one-tenth scale - conditions that are currently unavailable to device developers and engineers. The facility is managed by Flo,Wave TT, a not-for-profit subsidiary of the University of Edinburgh. Location. The Flo,Wave building is located within Edinburgh University s King s Buildings campus; this campus is well served by public transport and is accessible by car. The building is within three miles of the city centre and two miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The campus lies between West Mains Road and Mayfield Road, about two miles south of George Square. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city Centre. The nearest bus stop is located within the Campus approximately 150 metres from the Flo,Wave building. Numerous bus services stop within the Campus and West Mains Road. Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access the Flo,Wave building from Gates 1 & 4. 7 Parking. The King s Buildings Campus has numerous parking bays but no free parking; all parking bays within the campus require a permit. City of Edinburgh Council parking is available outwith the campus on West Mains Road and the adjacent Langton Road. See Location Map. There are currently no dropped kerbs leading from parking bays located along West Mains Road. Access from these parking bays to the campus is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. Disabled Parking Bays. There is one disabled parking bay located within the Flo,Wave building car park. This disabled parking bay is located on a level paved surface and is within close proximity to Entrance 1. There is good level access from this bay to Entrance 1 via a paved footpath. Disabled parking bay IMAGE. University Car Parks. There is a University car park located to the side of the Flo,Wave building. This car park has a level tarmac surface and a limited number of parking bays. All parking bays are situated on a level paved surface. There are additional University car parks located within the surrounding area and throughout the King s Buildings Campus. See Location Map. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a University parking bay, it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the Transport & Parking Office prior to making your journey. 8 Access Routes. There are two main pedestrian access routes to the Flo,Wave building. Access Route 1. This access route is only recommended for wheelchair users with assistance. The access route starts on a paved area to the side of the University bus stop. From this area there is a pedestrian crossing which leads to the front of the Scottish Microelectronic Centre (S,M,C). From the front of the building it is necessary to negotiate a tarmac road to the rear of the S,M,C building. This road has a shallow gradient and leads to a level footpath at the side of the Biospace building. There is a fairly level tarmac road which leads from the side of the Biospace building to the Flo,Wave building car park. There is good level access to Entrance 1 from this car park. Road to the front of the SMC image. image. Footpath leading from the rear of the SMC Access Route 2. Please note that this access route incorporates steps and is not recommended for wheelchair users. This access route starts on a tarmac road to the front of the S,R,U,C building. From this road it is necessary to negotiate a footpath with limited dropped kerbs and the SRUC building car park. 10 Outside Access. There is one entrance to the Flo,Wave building. Entrance 1. This entrance is located to the front of the building on a level paved surface. Entrance 1 can be accessed via two paved steps from the SRUC building car park or a paved footpath from the Flo,Wave building car park. Steps leading to the entrance incorporate contrasting nosings and areas of tactile paving but do not incorporate handrails. Entrance 1 consists of a secure single width glazed door. This door leads to a vestibule area and an additional single width glazed door. Please note that both doorways incorporate a raised threshold which can be negotiated with care. All doors are automated, open outward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at an accessible height. There is a swipe card point and an intercom located to the left of the external doorway which are within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. The intercom is linked to offices on the First Floor. Entrance 1 IMAGE. Internal Access. There is good circulation space throughout the Flo,Wave building and good level access to the First Floor. Doors within corridors incorporate door handles and viewing panels at an accessible height. Ground Floor Wave Tank. Please note that there are steel grids located to the sides of the wave tank which may prove difficult for wheelchair users to negotiate. See Ground Floor Plan. Wave tank IMAGE. Page 9.
11 Reception. There is no reception within the Flo,Wave building. Any inquiries should be directed to your host or building management prior to making your journey. See Contact Information for more details. Lifts. There are no lifts within the Flo,Wave building. Platform Lift. There is a single platform lift located within the Flo,Wave building. The platform lift provides level access to the offices on the First Floor. See Floor Plans for locations. Stairs. There are two steel staircases located within the Flo,Wave building which serve all floors. Both staircases incorporate contrasting nosings, tactile coverings on steps and handrails to both sides. 12 Toilets. Toilets are available on floors as follows: There are no standard toilets located within the Flo,Wave building. Accessible toilets are located on the Ground and First Floors. The Ground Floor toilet incorporates a standard shower. See Floor Plans for locations. The accessible toilets incorporate the following: There is right hand lateral transfer space on the Ground Floor and left on the First Floor. There is good manoeuvring space. There are emergency pull chords. The doors open outwards. The width of the accessible toilet door is suitable for wheelchairs. There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. The tap type is lever operation. There are no coat hooks. The contrast between the grab rails and wall is good. The contrast between the walls and floor is good. Lighting levels are good.
