2 Overview This course will include cutting-edge reviews of medical and surgical therapies available for the management of Parkinson s disease and other major tremor disorders, as well as the diagnosis and management of commonly-seen movement disorders in primary care clinics: ataxias, psychogenic movements, drug-induced movements, and choreas. Current clinical and basic science research in Parkinson s disease (PD) and other common movement disorders will also be featured. Objectives 4 Present an overview of the clinical features, differential diagnosis, and management of major classes of movement disorders that primary care physicians see in their office and hospital practices: parkinsonism, tremors, dystonias, ataxias, psychogenic and drug-induced movements, and choreas. Established and cutting-edge therapies will be discussed for each area with an emphasis on state-of-the-art medical, botulinum toxin injection, and surgical treatments. 4 Update the audience on recent therapeutic advances that have occurred in the movement disorders field, with particular emphasis on local and international clinical research involving PD that will likely lead to new therapies over the next few years. 4 Update the audience on major areas of thought in the basic science of PD, with special emphasis on recent advances in PD genetics. Local and international research will be featured, and its relevance to the near-future development of disease-modifying therapies discussed.
