1 Meticillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA) An Information Leaflet September 2011 Every Patient Matters
2 LAB84 2 What is MSSA? Staphylococcus aureus is a very common bacterium (germ) that around 30% of the population carry on their skin or on the lining of their nose and throat without knowing it. Usually this germ is harmless. Sometimes it can cause local infections such as abscesses or boils and it can infect any wound that has caused a break in the skin e.g. grazes, surgical wounds. MSSA stands for Meticillin Sensitive Staphylococcus Aureus. In a few number of cases, MSSA can lead to a serious infection called septicemia (blood poisoning) How is MSSA caught? You may have caught MSSA from your contact with the health service or you may have had it before. It could have already been in your nose or on your skin. How will you know if you have it? MSSA is only detected by a laboratory. This is usually only when a wound or another area of the body becomes infected and a sample from it is sent to the laboratory for analysis e.g. a swab, pus, urine. Who can it affect? Everyone will have had MSSA at some time, however you won t know until you have a swab or specimen taken. Do you need to stay off work or school? No - but all infected cuts or wounds should be covered
3 LAB84 3 How can it spread? MSSA can be transferred from person to person via touch. This is the most common way of spreading it. It can also be spread via some of the equipment used to care for you during your contact with the health service. However in hospital as there are many patients in close proximity to one another, this makes the spread of MSSA easier. How do you stop the spread of MSSA? In hospital Gloves and aprons are worn when caring for you to help minimise the risk of transferring the MSSA to other patients. Staff and visitors must wash their hands well before and after attending to you, as hand hygiene is an important way of controlling the spread of MSSA. If you have been told that you have MSSA you may be moved to a bay with other people who also have MSSA. This is to protect other patients who may be vulnerable to infection. Healthcare staff should wash their hands well before and after attending to you, as hand hygiene is an important way of controlling the spread of MSSA. At home When you are at home, make sure you wash your hands regularly, keep your skin clean by having a bath or shower everyday, and keep any cuts clean and covered. You should be especially careful about washing your hands before food preparation. If you come into contact with someone with MSSA you should wash your hands well using warm water and soap. As MSSA is easily transmitted from one person to another, towels, flannels and bed linen should not be used by anyone else. These should be changed daily until any symptoms have stopped and they should be washed to the hottest temperature possible for the fabric using a biological washing powder.
4 LAB84 4 What is the treatment? If you are identified as having a clinical infection then your Consultant/GP may prescribe antibiotics where appropriate or topical treatment as outlined below. The topical treatment offered can significantly reduce the number of MSSA germ on the body. This may consist of nasal cream and a skin / hair wash. Advice can be sought from your Consultant/GP if this is indicated. Will it recur? Yes, it can come back; unfortunately it may not totally go away. If you come into contact with healthcare practitioners again you may be swabbed to determine if the colonisation/infection is still present. Can I have Visitors? MSSA generally does not lead to infection in healthy people, including pregnant women, children and babies. It can affect people who have certain long term health conditions but as long as you are careful with hand hygiene there is no reason why you cannot socialise with your family and friends as normal. However you should take extra care if you are caring for someone who is unwell especially if you are helping them look after their own wounds, or are using any medical devices. If you have concerns please ask your healthcare practitioner. The most important thing for you and your visitors to do is to ensure they wash their hands with soap and water after visiting you so that they do not spread MSSA.
