A. General report 1. Host institution and exact dates of semester abroad Toulouse Business School in Toulouse, France 20 Boulevard Lascrosses on the Compans-Cafarelli campus 1 st Semester from 28 August 2015 until 18 December 2015 (Intensive French language course of two weeks included) 2. Contact with home faculty, preparation and journey During my stay in Toulouse, I did not have a lot of contact with my home faculty since it was not necessary. I have only contacted them regarding the learning agreement, but whenever I would contact them they would respond quite quickly. For my preparation I had visited Toulouse in the summer for one day as we were on our way back home from vacation. However, after this small trip I had obtained a bad impression since we went to the wrong area and thought that it was the city centre, which it was not. So, I would recommend to either do it right or to not go at all and just look on google street view. My journey to Toulouse was pretty easy. My parents brought me to Amsterdam and from there I took the plane directly to Toulouse. From the airport in Blagnac I took the airport shuttle (la navette) to Compans Cafarelli (3 min. walk), which had a price of 8 euros one way. 3. Residence abroad Accommodation There are multiple residences available that the TBS has a partnership with. I chose to sent an to one of the partners, which was Residence Atale as soon as I heard that I got accepted in order to obtain a room. This residence is the most popular among the exchange students because it is right next to the TBS and a lot of exchange students live there. My room was 25 m 2 and had two floors where on the first floor I would have my own kitchen and living area, and upstairs there was a two-person bed and a bathroom. The price was 495 euros per month and for the first month you would have to pay a deposit of 408 euros and fees of 150 euros. I moved in on the 26 th of August and I left 20 th of December. However, for the first month you will already start to pay from the 15 th of August. Also, it is possible to apply for the CAF, which is a housing grant. If you are willing to face the challenging French bureaucracy, you will be rewarded with around 175 euros per month. Luckily, the TBS and its Welcome Team are very assistant and will get you through it. Student life, culture and leisure Toulouse is a beautiful city that is also called la ville rose because it is well-known for its buildings that use stones that look pink at sundown. The city is one of the biggest student cities in France and you can notice that really well. There are many parties and several are completely focussed on Erasmus students. The city centre

can be reached very well by metro, bike or by walk and it has all the stores you want and a lot of places to eat and drink. The French people are quite relaxed and it takes a lot of time and paperwork to get something done. The French bureaucracy can sometimes be a very annoying vicious circle, for instance: you need to have house insurance before you enter the room, however you cannot enter the room before you pay the deposit, yet to obtain a French bank account you need to prove that you actually live in Toulouse, and to prove that you live in Toulouse you need to have signed the papers at the residence. But, do not panic yet because the people are quite easy going and all you need is patience. Moreover, most of the French people take lunch breaks of 2 hours where the offices and some stores will be closed. This could be very annoying as well or a great opportunity to enjoy the French food with amazing people every day. As for the leisure, the sport association of the TBS provides several sports that you could practice for a fee. For instance, I practiced tennis where I could also use the court any day of the week to stay in shape and meet French and foreign students. Language At the TBS I took an English track and followed an intensive two-week French course. A lot of students spoke very well English but some students had a lot of trouble with it. Although a lot of citizens can speak English it is still most of the time more efficient when you speak a bit of French. Also, it is highly appreciated if you try to speak a bit French and when you use the basics at for instance: supermarkets and stores. 4. Grant Since I was a European student living abroad I could apply for the Erasmus grant. France is categorized as a high living country and therefore did I receive 270 euros per month. However, you will receive 70 % before the mobility and the remaining 30 % after the mobility. Besides the grant, I also received a grant of almost 100 euros per month because I temporarily stopped my student travelling product on my OVcard. This amount was added to my uitwonende studiefinanciering. Also, as previously mentioned I received the CAF of around 172 euros per month. The living expenses in Toulouse are quite high, especially at the Carrefour nearby the TBS. So it would be best to take the metro or to walk to other supermarkets such as the Lidl. 5. Study (general) The programme I followed was Master 1 Préfo English track. This was not very difficult and as an Erasmus student you don t need to be present all the time at the classes, yet they do keep track of absence. The first block was quite relaxed but the second block was busier due to all the projects. I was very fortunate to not have chosen the analysis courses where there was an emphasize on group projects which caused problems for many people due to the travelling of many foreign students. However, I did have to take more exams. During the whole semester we had no exams but on the last day of the semester I had eight exams on one day, which was challenging.

6. Other relevant info I studied in the first semester, which was sadly already over before Christmas. Yet, it is hardly impossible to go the second semester, which is longer, since classes in Toulouse will already start at the beginning of January while the last exams in Groningen will be at the end of January. 7. Summary impression In summary I can say that I had an amazing time in Toulouse. The city is really nice and easily reachable, the people are friendly, and the weather is really pleasant. The TBS was always very helpful and were highly focussed on making everything as comfortable as possible for the students. The Welcome Team of the TBS is especially set up to help the exchange students and to make setting up contact with others more easily. I felt like I was at home quite quickly and made amazing new friends from all over the world. I am really glad that I got selected for the TBS and I can recommend it to anyone who wants to have a great time and learn some French. The only advice I could give to future students is that you should interact as much as possible and try to get some French friends so that you can solely practice your French since it is highly possible that you will mostly hang out with foreign students and speak English.

A. Specific report 1. Host institution and study abroad English lv. 1 Class hours: 30 h Objectives: - Summary: The final grade consisted of participation and added value in class. This was quite an interesting course since we had a lot of presentations and class debates. French lv. 2 Class hours: 30 h Objectives: - Summary: There were three levels from which I could choose. The lowest was for people who did know any French and the highest was for people who were basically fluent in French. Therefore, I had chosen the middle one. The final grade consists of an individual exam. Management Control (+ 12 h e-learning) Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: Understand the roots of performance in the organization they are working for. Master the basic management control tools in order to contribute to performance of the company. Summary: This course mainly focussed on basic accountancy and organizational strategy and design. It consisted of material that I was already familiar with but this was more in-depth focussed. There were exercises in class and in the last session we discussed a case in a practical way, which was very interesting. Moreover, the course was relevant in a way that it was a nice repetition of material and courses we have already had in Groningen. The final grade consists of an individual exam. Corporate Finance Credits: 3 ECTS Class hours: 21 h Objectives: This module aims to provide students with both a fundamental and an operational grounding in corporate finance. A rigorous method for selecting investment projects will be presented and practiced. Students will learn the various modes of financing and their real cost. Summary: There were no lectures with this course but only tutorials that covered a lot of material. It was sometimes quite confusing since the teacher used extra material to explain the subjects while not providing these extra materials online. The course is in a way similar to the IB course Finance & Risk. The final grade exists of an individual exam. Macroeconomics Objectives: This course aims to present the necessary materials for a global

understanding of the economic environment of firms and its evolution. We will study how the economic activity is measured and what it means. We will develop the monetary and banking structure of the economy, which will inform the contemporary debates about the origins of economic crisis and their repercussions. It is also important to analyse the foundations and the impacts of regulatory economic policies in a globalized world, in particular the policies led by the FED and the ECB. Finally, to understand what we call 'globalization', we will study the interactions between economies, their nature and their impacts. Summary: This course was also based upon material that I already had knowledge about. Also, there were no tutorials, only lectures. The final grade consists of an individual exam. Marketing Objectives: To introduce marketing, its overall approach, its key concepts and strategic thinking;; to present the basics of consumers behaviour and B-to-B purchase, and how they can be studied;; to introduce the key components of the marketing mix;; to discuss new trends and evolutions of marketing. Summary: This course was different from the IB marketing course here in Groningen since the main goal was to develop a complete new product from an existing company and to find a market and promotion for it. Moreover, it did not have lectures, only tutorials. The final grade consists of an individual exam and a group project. International Trade Objectives: To provide students with an introduction to international trade and its importance for business;; to explain the complexities of international logistics and the key techniques and vocabulary required to operate effectively;; to raise awareness of the risks involved in international trade and explain the key techniques to avoid risk;; to raise awareness of foreign exchange risk in international transactions and explain the key techniques to manage this risk. Summary: This course did not have any lectures, only tutorials. It is perhaps quite similar to FDI, Trade & Geography for IB, yet it explains it in more details. The final grade consists of an individual exam. Business Statistics Class hours: 21 h Objectives: The aim of the course is to initiate students to various methods of statistical analyses applied in the field of management;; to acquire the minimum technical knowledge data processing;; to efficiently use the EXCEL spreadsheet in the studies and statistical analyses;; to interpret and explain the results in tables and graphs obtained with EXCEL. Summary: The final grade consists of an intermediate exam and a final individual exam. This course was not very difficult since it is focussed on the basics of statistics, but it was very nice to practice it with EXCEL.

CSR Objectives: Our key objective is to raise awareness of different concepts: Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainable Development and responsible management. Or goal is to develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society by integrating social and environmental considerations in their decision-making. Because every managerial subject can be impacted, this module aims to prepare managers to participate in the implementation of CSR approach. Summary: The final grade consists of a group presentation, group discussion, group assignment, and an individual exam. The classes were quite interesting since we discussed the moral responsibility of many companies. Operation Management Class hours: 30 h Objectives: The main objective of this module is to present how companies can design and manage their operations to produce goods or services and better adapt supply to demand;; this question is fundamental to any organization. The continuous search for a better match between supply and demand (in quantities, in delivery delays, in the design of products, in the quality of products ) generates significant competitive advantages (cost, differentiation, responsiveness ). To achieve this goal, the company must implement a set of concepts, models and methods. These concepts, models and methods are discussed and studied in this course. They aim, first, at helping managers in their decision-making (what to produce? At what cost? How much (and what) to stock? How to best manage the flow of customers? What production capacities to choose?...) and, secondly, at producing the information needed to improve the system (as the average waiting time of a customer, the number of defective deliveries, the stocks per period ). Knowing when and how to apply these tools of operations management is the heart of knowledge you will acquire during this course. Summary: This course was quite extensive since it covered a lot of material in a short period of time. Final grade consists of an individual exam.
