3 Once there was a little girl who loved nature. She loved to walk in the woods and streams, the forests and hillsides. She loved how the tall grasses waved in the winds. Her parents named her Rainah, because she was born when the beautiful rains came and made the flowers bloom. One day, as Rainah and Lyric sat under the magnolia tree in their backyard looking out at the setting sun, Rainah realized something: Both of them had found a friend to explore the world with. Rainah never felt lonesome again, and the husky had found his home. Husky Book 1 v7.indd 3 10/3/2008 7:43:18 AM
4 Rainah was always happiest in the woods, where she could explore to her heart s content. But, she was a little bit lonesome. She wanted a friend to explore with someone who loved the outdoors as much as she did. When she walked through the forest, she saw that many of the forest creatures had friends. At night, Lyric slept on Rainah s bed. He curled up and fell into a deep and peaceful sleep. Rainah slept well too, knowing her friend was right there with her. They were very peaceful together. 5 Far across town, a very young red husky was being taken care of by the local pet shelter. The little husky was sad to be alone, and he hoped someone would soon come to his rescue. 6 The little red husky had almost given up hope until... one day... a very kind man and woman came. They wrapped the small husky up in a big hug. Right away, he knew he would have a home. He couldn t wait to see it and to meet his new family. Husky Book 1 v7.indd 6 10/3/2008 7:43:36 AM
7 When Rainah got tired, the husky curled up and made a pillow where she laid her head down on his soft fur and took a nap. That night the man and woman brought the husky home. They gave him water and food. Then the woman laid him down on a nice so bed, right next to a sleeping li le girl. The woman whispered to the li le husky that the girl s name was Rainah, and that Rainah would find a name for him. Husky Book 1 v7.indd 7 10/3/2008 7:43:41 AM
8 Together, they explored the forests and the streams. Rainah taught the husky how to search for water. And the husky taught Rainah how to dig down into the earth and make a cool spot to lie in. The next morning, Rainah awoke a er a long sleep. She was cuddled up against a very so pillow. Then she looked closer and saw that the pillow was actually... a fuzzy li le husky puppy! 9 At first the husky was so small he could fit inside her hat! But he fell in love with the little girl, Rainah, and as he grew he learned to keep a watchful eye and look out for her safety. She couldn t believe it! At first she did not know what to do. She had never had a puppy before. But the li le husky knew! It woke up and wriggled into her arms. It licked her face. 10 At first, it wasn t always easy for Rainah to keep up with the husky. She had never had a puppy before, and there was so much to learn! She learned how to feed him and give him water, how to brush him, and she took him to the vet for his first checkup. Also, the puppy was very strong, so she had to teach him how to walk by her side and not pull her over! It was a lot of work, and sometimes Rainah felt a little bit frustrated, but she tried hard every day. There soon came a day when taking care of the little husky felt natural.
