1 Speaking and Listening: We will listen to stories and talk about the meaning of new words we meet. The children listen to news reports and factual accounts, picking up key pieces of information that they can use in discussion (linked to how we can keep healthy.) Reading: During Book Fortnight each class we will be reading various stories and rhymes by Roald Dahl. The children will be given reading tasks in class and at home to improve their understanding of what has been read. In particular, we will look closely at stories to find evidence, words or phrases which describe how characters are feeling or acting. Writing: STAG LANE INFANT AND NURSERY SCHOOL: FOREVER LEARNERS : ACHIEVING OUR DREAMS CURRICULUM OVERVIEW SPRING 2 FIT AND HEALTHY The curriculum is separated into subject areas, but we plan our learning around a topic. Our intention is to give both knowledge and practical opportunities to children so that they can learn skills in a relevant context. Literacy Our writing will be based around stories from one of our favourites Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We will use lively vocabulary to describe characters and settings. As we continue to read books written by Roald Dahl we will compare themes, character traits and favourite parts. Phonics In our phonics lessons we will be practising sounding vowel digraphs (au, oe, ea, ay) and looking at alternative pronunciations to letters such as y (for example, sounding different in each of these words - yes, by and very). We will be focusing on grammar, using the past tense accurately. Mathematics We will develop our understanding division, as whole numbers being grouped. The children will use number lines as a method to calculate division questions. We will introduce the operation of multiplication as repeated addition. The children will use number lines to represent groups of numbers and begin to learn 2, 5, 10 and 3 times tables. We will estimate, measure and compare weights, choosing and using suitable standard units and suitable measuring instruments; We will use units of time (seconds. minutes, hours, days and weeks) and know the relationship between them for example 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in and hour and so on. We will find fractions of numbers shapes including 1/2s, 1/4s and 1/3s. Science Our Science is linked being Healthy and we will focus particularly on ways we can stay Fit and Healthy. In PE we will compare our bodies before and after exercise. We will look at when and how we are using our muscles and which parts of our body we are helping to strengthen. The children will be answering the question: What is the best way to remove bacteria from our hands? Using cold, water and warm water, soap and no soap, children will investigate the best way to keep clean. They will predict, make observations and record their results.

4 ICT In ICT children will use digital cameras and tablets to take photographs of activities where they are keeping fit and healthy. The children will earn how to edit photos and create special effects. Religious Education We will learn more about Islam and listen to the story Prophet Muhammad s vision, and other stories. As part of our work on Christianity, the children will listen listen to the story of Easter and understand its importance in Christian calendar. History We will learn about the lives of the nurses Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. We will compare their work and how and why they were remembered. Personal, Health Social Education and Citizenship and Circle Time The theme this half term is Say no to Bullying. We will look at what makes a good friends and ways we can overcome arguments we may have with others. Design and Technology We will plan, organise and prepare a healthy dish to eat in class. PE Outdoor Games We will be developing our skills of sending and receiving a ball using hands, feet, bats, sticks. The children will practise watching a ball coming towards them and knowing where to move in order to catch it. Gym In Gym we will be focusing stretching and curling. The children will create different shapes, changing levels and experiment with moving from stretch in to curl. In pairs they will create dance movements, watching, copying and describing what they and others have done. Music Our music unit this half term is called What s in a score? We will be looking at how music is written through notation as well learning new songs linked to Easter. Home Learning We would like to encourage parents to take an active role in their children s home learning, reinforcing what has been taught in school. This will help your child to progress. This may be in the form of practical activities, such as reading instructions on board games to comparing prices in the supermarket such as which chocolate bar is most expensive or least expensive? Literacy and Numeracy homework will be sent home on Fridays and should be returned the following Wednesday. Spelling homework will go home on Friday and the children will be tested the following Thursday. Parents Evening: Monday 7th March and Wednesday 9th March
