2 Geography of The Middle East Questions Using maps from your textbook, atlases, or other sources, answer the following questions about the geography of the Middle East. Each block will have a question to answer on the answer grid and a question to fill in on the map. 1. The area that we refer to as the Middle East is actually parts of three continents. What are they? Label these continents on the blank areas of your map (not inside country borders). 3. What are the bodies of water that surround the Middle East? Label these bodies of water on your map and lightly color them blue. 5. It is difficult traveling northsouth in Iran because of what physical feature? Label Iran. Label this large physical feature on your map. Lightly color it brown. 7. What are the two completely landlocked countries in this region? Label these countries on your map. 2. Although the Middle East is surrounded by bodies of water, it lacks major lakes and has few rivers. What are the rivers that start in Turkey and travel through Iraq? What is the river that flows through Egypt? Label these three rivers on your map and outline them in blue. Label Iraq and Egypt. 4. The major physical feature of the Middle East is desert. What is the large peninsula that is mostly desert? Label the seven countries that make up this peninsula. Color the desert areas yellow. 6. The peninsula that juts into the Red Sea also connects Egypt and Israel. Label this peninsula on your map. Label Egypt and Israel. 8. The world s major monotheistic religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all consider Jerusalem an important and holy city. It is the capital city of what country? Label Jerusalem and its country on your map. The Middle East 1

3 9. What are the countries that border Iraq? Label them on your map. 11. There is very little farming in the Middle East? Why do you think this is so? Label the country to the north that has large areas of commercial and subsistence farming. 10. The Rub al Kahli, (in English the Empty Quarter) stretches across the southern part of what country? Label the Rub al Kahli on your map. 12. What energy producing natural resources are plentiful throughout the Middle East? 6 Geography of The Middle East - Answers 1. The Middle East is part of Europe, Asia, and Africa. 2. The Tigris and Euphrates flow through Iraq; the Nile flows through Egypt. 3. The Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Red Sea surround the Middle East. 5. The Zagros Mountains are in Iran. 4. The Arabian Peninsula in mostly desert. (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen) 6. The Sinai Peninsula juts into the Red Sea and connects Egypt and Israel. 7. Jordan and Afghanistan are landlocked countries. 8. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. 9. Iraq is bordered by Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. 10. The Rub al Kahli stretches across the southern part of Saudi Arabia. 11. There is very little farming because there is so much desert. Turkey has the most farming. 12. Oil (petroleum) and Natural Gas are plentiful in the Middle East. The Middle East 5
