7 Evidence Based Practice Series Arts Psychotherapies Interventions for Psychosis (Ref: PSYCH1) Using a framework developed from psychodynamic and psychoanalytic models, this training in Arts Psychotherapies for Psychosis focuses on technical aspects of thinking and talking about psychosis with a patient and processing transference and counter-transference. The following will form the essential components of the day: Assessment Psychodynamic formulation Clinical process Supervision The models taught will be supported by qualitative and quantitative research including a manualised approach to supportive psychotherapy but will keep the role of the arts media at the centre of the approach. There will be an opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field. Many aspects of this approach to working with psychosis relating to understanding the dynamics also underlie the other training courses. It is recommended that you attend this day in conjunction with any other training day as this will offer the psychodynamic theoretical foundation as well as models for psychodynamic formulation for assessment and treatment. 8 Evidence Based Practice Series Introduction to Mentalisation Based Approaches to Arts Psychotherapies (Ref:IM1) Mentalisation based treatment (MBT) is an innovative form of psychodynamic psychotherapy, developed and manualised by Peter Fonagy and Anthony Bateman. MBT has been designed for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), who suffer from disorganised attachment and fail to develop a mentalisation capacity within the context of an attachment relationship. Fonagy and Bateman suggest that mentalisation is the process by which we implicitly and explicitly interpret the actions of oneself and others as meaningful on the basis of intentional mental states. Arts Psychotherapies MBT model, focuses on the re-representations (image, sound, movement, narrative) of self and other and alternative perspectives that underpin affect regulation and interpersonal dynamics. Verbal interactions in the context of arts psychotherapies practice will also be explored. MBT supports Art Psychotherapists, Music Therapists, Drama Therapists and Dance Movement Psychotherapists in their work with patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder or closely aligned conditions. If this training is taken in conjunction with the other evidence based practice series, the applicant will be given a discounted rate for all trainings applied for. Other courses available: Interpersonal Arts Psychotherapies Arts Psychotherapies Interventions for Psychosis Course details 8 To apply: please contact icapt.cnwl@nhs.net / Dates: 17th 18th January 2011 Location: 20 Eastbourne Terrace, London, W1 Course Leaders: Dominik Havsteen-Franklin and Mary Oley Fees: employer funded 250 self-funded/discounted rate* 150 student/unemployed *Please note, to receive the discounted rate, all three trainings must be booked at the same time. (PSYCH1, IM1, IIP1)
9 Evidence Based Practice Series Interpersonal Arts Psychotherapies (Ref: IIP1) Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is an empirically validated treatment for a variety of psychiatric disorders. The evidence for IPT supports its use for affective disorders, eating disorders and depression. It is recognised as an effective psychotherapy by the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE). IPT was developed in the 1970s at Yale University by Gerald Klerman, Myrna Weissman & Eugene Paykel and stemmed from the interpersonal psychoanalytic work of Harry Stack Sullivan. IPT takes its structure from psychodynamic psychotherapy, is time limited and employs structured interviews and assessment tools. Central to IPT is the Interpersonal Triad, based on the premise that interpersonal conflicts and the patients capacity manage this is strongly influenced by previous environmental stressors and biosocial factors and treatment proceeds in specific phases. Interpersonal Arts Psychotherapies model applies a time limited structure particularly with patients suffering from depressive symptoms, using the creative media as a means to explore attachment and relationship difficulties in terms of the role and disputes pertinent to the issues at hand. This allows the arts psychotherapist to frame their focus of the content of the arts medium according to key principles of the Interpersonal Approach (rather than interpretative). If this training is taken in conjunction with the other evidence based practice series, the applicant will be given a discounted rate for all trainings applied for. Other courses available: Introduction to Mentalisation Based Approaches to Arts Psychotherapies Arts Psychotherapies Interventions for Psychosis Course details To apply: please icapt.cnwl@nhs.net / Date: 19th January Location: 20 Eastbourne Terrace, London, W1 Course Lead: Kate Emmerson Fees: 175 employer funded 125 self funded/discounted rate* 75 student/unemployed *Please note, to receive the discounted rate, all three trainings must be booked at the same time. 10 Arts Psychotherapies PhD The CNWL Partnership MPhil/PhD programme is for arts psychotherapy MA students with a strong interest in researching an area of arts psychotherapies. We welcome students from a wide range of academic disciplines where the focus is on the creative arts and their therapeutic application in adult mental health. CNWL has a good history of developing research projects in collaboration with a number of UK Universities. This is an academic degree with a clinical focus and does not lead to registration in arts psychotherapies. Candidates will usually have a Masters degree; and normally professional registration or accreditation in a relevant clinical profession. The programme offers an initial consultation to consider the timing and best suited supervisor(s) with one of the alliance Universities. CNWL offers a number of adult mental health clinical settings where research can be designed and clinically supervised by senior practitioners. International Centre for Arts Psychotherapies Training in mental health (ICAPTmh) PhD Applicant Administration initial meeting Complex proposals INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR RESEARCH IN ARTS PSYCHOTHERAPIES University Alliance: Applicant linked with appropriate Academic and Clinical Supervisors. Advice and support is offered to the applicant regarding the application process and recommendations of University PhD Proposal discussed with applicant University makes arrangements for PhD applicant 10
11 The objectives of the programme are: to advance the conceptual thinking in the field, where appropriate, through making the links between conceptual research in arts psychotherapies, the use of creative mediums within adult mental health and cognitive science and empirical research. to contribute to the comparative study of psychotherapeutic and psychological theories and their applications whilst paying attention to the underlying philosophical assumptions and the philosophical coherence of the theories; to develop a critical and reflective understanding of debates and controversies within the chosen area of study; to advance the development of research methods and models relevant to arts psychotherapies to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the generation of new knowledge, applications or understanding; to generate innovative connections between theoretical knowledge and its application to practice.
