4 4 MYLAPORE TIMES Oct 3-9, 2015 TEMPLE ARTISTS AT WORK By Preeti Srivatsan In a shed outside the Karpagambal sannidhi at Sri Kapali Temple, R. Jaikumar and K. R. Srinivasan, both from Karaikudi are applying white paint on the Ravana vahanam. Srinivasan and his family have been in this craft for decades. Back home in Karaikudi, he also makes new vahanams and thers ( temple chariots). The renovation and repair of Sri Kapali Temple at Mylapore has begun under the supervision of archeological experts. A Balalayam ritual was performed on Sep 9 ahead of the kumbhabhishekam which is expected to take place in early Last week on the eastern side of the temple, workers are seen putting up the scaffolding around the main gopuram. In a few hours, the structure had risen to the skies! C. T. Manikam, also from Karaikudi, is in charge of the renovation works on the main gopuram, 8 vimanams and a few vahanams. He says, The work on the main gopuram and the smaller vimanams will start at the same time. We plan to employ 30 people for the main gopuram and about 20 for the other smaller vimanams. We expect to complete the work in about three months. So how do the men from Karaikudi repair vahanams? The cracks on the vahanams (made of wood) will be repaired with a special gum and will be covered with a cotton cloth to prevent any damage. They will be painted with enamel paint, we are told. Since the gopuram and vimanams are made of stone, limestone (sunnambu) will be mixed with a little cement to cover the cracks. A multi colour water based exterior emulsion paint will be used to paint the gopuram, says Manikam. To repair broken arms, legs and other parts of a sculpture, they mix in a few brick pieces too in addition to the limestone and cement. Near the cow shed inside the temple, D. Saraswathi of Sakthi Arts which is based at Kellys, Chennai is working on an elephant vahanam. She is painting some intricate details. We follow the rules laid down in the Agama Sastra. Different designs and colours are used for different vahanams. The Indra vahanam, for example, must have the colours pink and yellow. For the gold paint, we mix a little linseed oil to give it a shine. Saraswathi is a third generation artist. The craft was started by her grandfather, she tells us. More than four groups are simultaneously working inside the temple. In addition to work on the gopurams and vimanams, civil works including electrical, plumbing, grill replacement and painting and repairing the floor and wall are expected to take place soon.

12 12 MYLAPORE TIMES Oct 3-9, 2015 LET US TAP THE RAIN Where is the rain? You may ask. But are you ready to tap it when it falls? On the eve of the monsoon, we must be prepared to value the water. Are we prepared? MYLAPORE TIMES is launching a simple, small project to promote rain water harvesting (RWH). You are at the centre of it. A small effort now can make a big change. THE CAMPAIGN On the eve of the monsoon season, there is something valuable a neighbourhood can do. Or must do. Be ready to tap rainwater. It is important and critical. In times when water is scarce. Buying water is simple. It costs. Tapping water is simpler. This campaign is a collaboration between Rain Centre, the NGO that promoters water harvesting and Mylapore Times, the neighbourhood newspaper. Its aim is to encourage Mylaporeans to tap rainwater. For starters, this campaign will focus on the Mandavelipakkam area in R. A. Puram. It will run on the ground and be covered in this weekly. For about two months. With the hope that such efforts can work positively. RESOURCES The Rain Centre is based in Mandavelipakkam. Its team has done some impressive work on this issue. And continues to do so, quietly. Its work in private campuses as well as public spaces is yielding results. Water levels have risen after rainwater was tapped. Rain Centre s head, Sekhar Raghavan has many years of experience in this field and it has been recognized. Sekar says he and his team at Rain Centre are willing to guide residents who wish to set up RWH systems in their houses/apartment campuses/institutes or those who must service the RWH system they set up some years ago. The Rain Centre, 4, Third Trust Link Street, Mandavelipakkam. Ph: ( 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) ( 9 a.m. to 7p.m.). terrace and the yard around. If you and your neighbours have a good RWH system in place, tapping the water when it rains will help raise the water level around you. Spending a few thousand rupees helps in the long run. If you have a RWH, then check out its status. Rubble, waste and plastic may have run into the wells and can spoil its efficacy. Your system needs some attention. Get it done now. It does not cost much. IDENTIFY COMMON SPACES TO TAP When a Chennai Corporation engineer watched rainwater run down a busy Mylapore road and into the drains, he got to work. A RWH system was set up on the roadside and a pipe now links it to a temple tank. Imagine the status of that tank if it rains for a week. Are there streets/roads in Mandavelipakkam which get flooded? Are there areas were rainwater runs off down the new drains? Rain Centre can ask local Corporation teams to explore ways to tap this wasted water. So the next time you take a walk around, keep this issue in mind. Share the info with Mylapore Times - HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE If your campus does not have a RWH system in place it is time to set it up. Imagine the gallons or water that will be wasted from the SHARE SUCCESS STORIES A well known institution in Mylapore is surprised that the water level in its abandoned well has risen sharply. All because it allowed a corporate to sink 12 wells to tap the rain that fell on large, open spaces. This is a good story that we will report. Tell us how RWH has helped people in your apartment block. We want to write on it. Call the newspaper s Edit Desk at ( 11 am to 5 pm) on weekdays and let us know.

14 14 MYLAPORE TIMES Oct 3-9, 2015 VINCENT D SOUZA It is that time of the year when we turn our attention to the teens in our neighborhood. A time when we ask them to join us to produce Mylapore Times. This has been the newspaper s tradition ever since it was launched over two decades ago. The idea must have popped up when we debated how we could celebrate Children s Day. The best we could do was to involve teens in our work through November. And so, it is that time of the year when this invitation goes out to our young people. To invite them to undertake field trips, collect information and write stories. The potential this opportunity offers is great. I recall one youngster who convinced the Sub-Inspector of our local police station to join him on his night rounds of the area. Beyond the story he had to share, it was an experience he seemed to have enjoyed well. And there was another enterprising lad who decided to learn more about the life of the San Thome fisherfolk - for which he had to ask his dad to drop him at Nocchi kuppam at 5 a.m. so that the boy could get a feel of the scene when the boats came ashore with the catch. And then there was this girl who asked the question - how do our senior citizens who have nobody around manage their daily lives? She had observed her neighbour who lived all by himself and got his meals delivered every morning. Her question led her to work on a small feature story. Most children, and adults do not really know our neighborhood very well. Let us accept this. Perhaps this is one reason why we do not respond to our civic roles more positively. Our annual assignment for teens provides them the space to explore the area, and look for stories that we assume are not newsworthy. I also believe that this assignment can be a trigger for young ones who wish to write. Short and long form. So we take this assignment seriously. And expect the kids to do so too. There was this boy in one of our summertime writing camps who took our word very seriously. When I asked the kids to step out of the classroom and spot a story, gather info and come back and file it, all in 30 minutes, this teen doubled into the liquor shop on the other side of the road. And when he started asking questions, the sales boys got annoyed and threw him out. Our class rolled in laughter when he narrated his experience. And we realized that we could also enjoy our work. When will we get new footpaths around temple tank? It is really heartening to know that new footpaths are to be laid in the Mylapore area. Though the Chennai- Corporation promised this earlier this year, we are yet to see new footpaths around Sri Kapaleeswar Temple tank. The stones have been stacked but the work is slow. - N. Mahadevan, Mylapore Justice Sundaram Road residents; affected by vegetable hawkers, motorists and temple visitors The residents of Justice Sundaram Road (near Nageswara Rao Park) have to put up with a gathering of local vegetable vendors who use our pavements to unload and load their stocks. They leave a lot of waste; they dump waste in the drains. The waste stinks. The drains are clogged if it rains. Now that traffic is regulated at Luz Circle, motorists use our road as a short cut. So the roar of traffic affects us. And people visiting the Sai Baba Temple park their cars in our area; they block our gates. We want Corporation and police officials to address these serious issues that affect us day in and day out. - Letter writer wants to remain anonymous Re-lay speed-breakers at Abhiramapuram road junction Recently, C. P. Ramaswamy Road was relaid. But the speed-breakers are gone. We need speed breakers at the intersection of 4th Street with C. P. Ramaswamy Road. Senior citizens use this area to access banks, shops and other places but traffic zips across all the time. - Ravichandran L., Abhiramapuram Luz Church Road is contributing to problems. In front of Nageswara Rao Park, the platform has been widened into the road. So now, vehicles pile up because those who use the park leave their bikes on this road. We will not be surprised if hawkers occupy the wide pavement and the area becomes like Luz Circle. - Sukumar, Mylapore Respect the dead One recent Sunday evening, when I was shopping at a provision shop on Dr. Ranga Rd., I was shocked to see that a dead body kept in a freezer box was kept alongside the road and people who seemed to be related to the dead person were gossiping. One understands that the house of the bereaved may be small but treating the dead like this shocks some of us. - Preetha Rengaswamy, Mylapore 1978 batch student of Lady Sivaswami wants to re-connect I belong to the 1978 batch at Sir Sivaswami Ayyar Girls School, Mylapore. I came back to Chennai after staying outside for 35 years. I am very keen to trace my batchmates and the teachers of my time - Vasanthalakshmi and others. Mail me at - - Sarasa, Mylapore Mess in R. A. Puram street; residents to blame The Corporation is doing its best effort to control piling up of garbages in the streets. But the story is different on 1st Main Road, R. A.Puram. For a long time a bin was placed in front of the home of a famous actress. But people used to drop garbage outside the bin. The entire place would be messy. Now the bin has been shifted to the other end of the same street but people dump waste in the old place. Imagine the mess now. May we suggest to our area s residents that they ask their maids to drop the waste into the bin. - Saranya G., R. A. Puram New, wide pavements causing traffic flow problems The new design of cement pavements on Keep Chitrakulam area clean I appreciate the good job done by NCC and NSS volunteers who recently cleaned the Chitrakulam area. However it is very important to ensure that the area continues to remain clean by posting volunteers to counsel those who litter and also by periodic cleaning. - Uma Shankar, Mylapore Tribute to V. R. Vasudevan Vasu ( V. R. Vasudevan) was a great friend of mine during my GCT days. We were privileged to have him visit us here in California. A gentleman with an infectious laugh, his interests went far beyond engineering. We used to discuss literature and politics. My wife Lalitha and I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Vasu s family. - Sam Vaidyanathan, USA
15 Oct 3-9, 2015 COMMUNITY STATE BANK HELPS FOUR POOR GIRLS MYLAPORE TIMES 15 Four girls were recently honoured by the Mylapore branch of State Bank of India for having achieved success despite being raised by single parents under economically challenging conditions. The girls were adopted by SBI in 2008 when they were in class VI at Lady Wellington Girls Hr. Sec. School, Triplicane. With the approval of the branch manager, an SB account was opened in the name of each student and the headmaster and an amount of Rs was credited to their account every year till they reached class XII. Retired SBI staff and a social worker Mohana Krishnan, monitored the progress of the students. Two sets of uniforms and other basic necessities were provided to them. They were encouraged to take part in extra curricular activities like essay writing, drawing and oratorical and elocution competitions.
