1 In News Focus #52, we head to Lapland, north of Finland and near the Arctic Circle. Until recently, this area relied on mining, but it has now reinvented itself as the home of Santa Claus. Families visit from all over the world to meet Father Christmas and his elves. Click here to read about a very special trip for one young boy to Lapland. Miracle Boy Meets Santa December 18, 2013 Lapland This week a wish came true for eight-year-old Joseph McDermott of Belfast, Northern Ireland, when he met Santa Claus. Eleven months ago, on January 29, Joseph was returning home after walking to his local store to buy candy when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. He suffered a broken neck, jaw, pelvis, arms and legs, as well as fractured ribs. Joseph was rushed to the hospital and remained in a coma for two months. Joseph is an avid fan of Cliftonville, our local soccer team, says his grandfather Simon Smith. While he was in a coma, I would sit with him every day and sing Cliftonville soccer songs to 1+him. I d also read the soccer results to him, and tell him about the matches we would go to together when he got better. When Joseph finally regained consciousness, the Cliftonville players visited him in the hospital and brought along a signed shirt from the whole team. Joseph remained in the hospital for months but has steadily gone from strength to strength. At one time, doctors feared that he might never walk again, but with extensive surgery and a lot of physiotherapy he s now walking with confidence. Last month, the family celebrated his recover by taking Joseph to watch a Cliftonville match. Eleven months ago, we didn t believe he d ever see another soccer match. It s a miracle, his emotional grandfather said. And yesterday another dream came true for Joseph: his grandparents took him to Lapland to visit Father Christmas. Ever since I can remember, I ve wanted to visit Santa and see his reindeers, he said. The past is over, I only want to talk about the present -- and my presents, joked Joseph. I told Santa that I wanted a Nintendo 2DS for Christmas. I think I've been good enough to get a special present. This will be a special Christmas for the McDermott family. We re over the moon to have Joseph back home. We ll be able to celebrate Christmas together the whole family, said his mother Joanna. Visit Santa in Lapland In recent years, Lapland has become a popular destination for families from various parts of Europe wanting to meet Father Christmas and his elves. There are plenty of one-, two- and three-day programs offering a trip to Santa s home and presents for the kids. Some also include a trip on a sled pulled by huskies, or a go on a snowmobile. Finnish Lapland is the destination for most Santa trips. This huge area of wilderness in the north of the country is home to less than 4% of Finland s population. With little industry, the area relies heavily on tourism. Deep snow, frozen lakes, thick pine forests and thousands of reindeer make it the ideal location for Father Christmas s home.

2 Throughout this area s seven-month winter, you can expect little more than five hours of sunlight with temperatures dropping well below freezing and sometimes as low as -25º C. But the sun often shines and the air is very dry, so as long as you dress properly, the cold is perfectly bearable. The secret to a successful Santa trip is to examine every detail of the itinerary. You ll want plenty of time with Santa and a range of other activities. Be careful: some short trips are very impersonal and give you hardly any time with Santa. Book well in advance and select one that specializes in small groups. A three-night stay in a log cabin including insurance, a husky-sled excursion and presents for the kids will not be cheap but it will be the memory of a lifetime! 3 Below, four speakers discuss the topic. Which speakers enjoyed their trip to Lapland? Which speakers did not enjoy their visit? 1. Ben magical day trip My wife and I took our two kids to Rovaniemi Airport in Finland for a day trip. Our travel agent suggested it and told us it was a popular option. When we landed at the airport, a giant screen told us that we were at the official airport of Santa Claus -- that was a nice touch. There were people from all over the world in the airport: the U.K., Spain, China, Japan, Australia, and Mexico. Like us, they all wanted to see Santa Claus. We took a bus to the official Santa Claus Village it s a collection of buildings made of stone and wood from local pine trees. We had lunch with Mother Christmas and headed off to find Santa. Our walk through the forest was magical. The path was candle lit, and we met elves along the way who gave us decorations to put on Santa's tree. We didn t receive any presents from Santa, but he did give each kid a stocking, which is a nice keepsake. This trip is well worth every penny and is even good for the grown ups. 2. Sara take a short break A day trip!? Would you take your family on a day trip from London to Athens? Or from Tokyo to Shanghai? So why would you fly them to Lapland for the day? Seven hours of flying not to mention the checking in and hanging around in airports. You ll be up at the crack of dawn and back home at midnight, if you re lucky. My advice is to take a short break instead then you ll have more time to do some extra activities. When I took my family on a three-night break to Lapland a couple of years ago, we had some wonderful adventures. We had snowmobile and husky-dog rides, and we went tobogganing in deep, untouched snow. We also saw the Northern Lights something you won t see on a day trip! 3. Dave -- go when the children are the right age The temperatures in December in Lapland can drop really low, minus 10ºC is typical! These kinds of low temperatures are challenging for babies and toddlers. And keep in mind that husky rides are not much fun for small kids. (And will they remember the trip a few years later?) That said, my son aged 7 loved our visit to Lapland. And he still believes in Santa. So, all in all, I d say the best age for kids to visit Santa is between five and eight. 4. Sally authentic Santa We took a day trip to Lapland this year. We arrived late and the airport terminal where we were fitted for our snow gear was chaotic. This fitting out took an hour! There was no one there to help us plan our day. My son was so disappointed when he saw the elves. He thought their costumes were not authentic at all. Santa himself was nice and looked genuine. His cabin was lovely, but I felt that we were rushed through it. In addition, the gifts for my children were cheap and too young for them. My advice is not to go! But if you are still determined, then bring your own presents for the children and choose a different tour company than Poron Travel!

4 [D] What s Your Opinion? After reading the article (exercise A) and the follow-up discussions (exercise C), answer the questions below. Qu 1: When you were a child, did you ever see Santa Claus? Where? Qu 2: Would you like to visit Santa in Lapland? Why? Why not? Qu 3: Which of the activities mentioned in this lesson would you like to do? Qu 4: Would you take your children to visit Santa Claus? Why? Why not? Answers: Miracle Boy Meets Santa [A] READING CHECK 1. Joseph is a teenager from Northern Ireland. Joseph will soon fly to Lapland to meet Santa. (I) [He has already met Santa in Lapland.] 6. Finnish Lapland is home to few people and many reindeers. (C) 7. It is not possible to stay more than one night in Lapland. (I) [The text says 2 nights is also possible.] [In fact, you can stay as long as you want.] 8.
