1 To: Students and Parents/Guardians, Chemistry Syllabus & Classroom Management Mrs. Lapierre It is my belief that all students can behave appropriately and succeed in the classroom. In order to guarantee the students in my classroom the excellent educational climate they deserve, no student will be allowed to prevent the teacher from teaching or other students from learning. EAGLE CLASSROOM RULES When in my classroom, students must comply with the following rules: 1. Each teacher instruction will be followed and supplies must be brought to class daily. 2. Each student will be in their seat ready to work when the tardy bell rings. 3. Leave any form of disrespect at the door teasing, yelling, put downs, rude gestures, or inappropriate language included. 4. All hands, feet and object are to be kept to yourself. 5. Getting out of your seat without permission is not permitted. 6. NO FOOD OR DRINK ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM. In addition to these rules, all school rules outlined in the student handbook, campus discipline plan, and student code of conduct will be enforced. CONSEQUENCES When the student CHOOSES to break a rule, the following consequences will occur: 1. Verbal Warning 2. Stay after class/ Teacher-Student Conference 3. Contact parent by phone, , or letter 4. Referral to student s principal Consequences may or may not occur in this particular order depending on the severity of the violation. Aggression or actions which disrupt the learning environment will result in the more serious consequences described in the District Management Plan. REWARDS When the student CHOOSES to follow all the rules, the following rewards are given: 1. KNOWLEDGE!! 2. Verbal praise 3. Positive Notes 4. Parent Contact 5. Individual Awards GRADING POLICIES 60 % Tests, Major Papers/Projects, Interactive Notebooks (INB); Major Lab reports 40% Quizzes, Classwork, Homework, Minor Lab reports and lab conduct.

2 COURSE DESCRIPTION Chemistry is a first year chemistry course designed to teach the student the fundamentals of chemistry. Chemistry is open to all students who wish to take part in a rigorous and academically challenging course. Required prerequisites: one unit of high school science and Algebra I. This means the student must have had a grade of 70% or higher prior to entering this class of BOTH a high school science course (usually biology but may be another if coming from a different school district) and Algebra I. This is a state requirement! SUPPLIES Required at all times for class: 1 composition notebook (with 100 pages.), black/blue pen, and pencils; personal supply of colored pens/pencils/markers, transparent tape/glue stick, post it notes. Note: Please make the notebook a composition notebook. The spirals tend to rip apart and you could lose precious papers that will be very difficult to make up. INB (Interactive Notebook) will be graded for summative grades. ACADEMIC HONESTY It is expected that you will at all times use genuine, sincere, and fair means to accomplish all work that is used to evaluate your progress in this course. If you are found plagiarizing, copying or cheating in any way, you will receive an automatic 0 for the work in question and a phone call/ / could be made home. If you are allowing another student to copy off of you, you will also receive a 0. ATTENDANCE You are required to come to class every day. If you are more than 15 minutes late to class, it is counted as an absence per school policy. Excused absences are eligible for making up assigned work. There are homework folders in the classroom for the five days of the week where daily work is placed. The schedule for the day and any assignments are posted on my website. It is the student s responsibility to inquire and obtain missed class work, home work, and tests. You have 5 days from your return to make up missed assignments. When possible, work will be sent home with you in the case of a prearranged absence. TESTS There will be several tests each semester. Tests will be cumulative! (This means that all material is continually tested throughout this course) EOC testing procedures are followed during tests. If a student is found with any electronic devices during tests, an automatic 0 is given for the test! Students may retake a test one time for a better grade. MAKE-UP TESTS Excused absences are eligible to make up a missed test/quiz. All make up exams will be taken in the morning OR afternoon during tutoring times as soon as possible following the missed exam, NOT during class time! You must arrange for a makeup test/quiz to be given. Make ups could be a different format from regular exams. Missing a makeup exam appointment without notice will result in a 0 being recorded for that test score.

3 LATE WORK- Assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class period by the time the tardy bell sounds. If you were present on the day the assignment was given, but, absent the day it was due, the assignment is due immediately upon return. Please see Ellison grading policies for more information. Students are allowed to correct most assignments as long as it is turned in by the due date. If it is turned in late, they will not be allowed to make corrections. TUTORING Tutoring schedule is posted on my website and in the classroom at all times. In general, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 8:00-8:40 a.m. and Wednesday afternoon 4:15-4:45 pm. If possible, let me know if you plan on attending a session. This schedule is subject to change. Any other tutoring times are by appointment only. A Brief List of Classroom Expectations and Procedures. 1. When the tardy bell rings, be in your seat and prepared for the start of class 2. At the end of the class, please remain seated until dismissed. The teacher dismisses class, not the bell. 3. Bring all supplies to class every day. This includes your interactive notebook, pencils, black/blue pens, colored pencils/pens/ markers/ highlighters for INB, clear tape/glue stick, and post-it-notes. 4. You may leave the room only if called by the office, if you are ill, or for emergency bathroom break. (If you abuse bathroom breaks, the privilege will be taken away.) 5. Students are responsible for doing their own work. Any form of cheating will result in a 0 for all parties involved. 6. Assignments made prior to an absence are due upon return. This includes exams which will be made up before or after school. 7. You will respect everyone in the classroom and respect all property. 8. Use of make-up, perfume/cologne, lotion, nail polish and similar items, and brushing your hair in the class are not permitted. Groom yourself at home. 9. Homework for other classes will not be done in class. 10. Sleeping or putting your head on the desk is not permitted. If you are feeling ill, inform the teacher. 11. NO drinks or food items are allowed in classroom. 12. Dispose trash in the trash container at the end of the period as you are leaving the classroom, not during class. 13. Correct English, both written and spoken, is expected and will be brought to your attention when not properly used. 14. Homework is due on the following school day at the appropriate class time unless indicated otherwise. Homework will be turned in as you walk into class. If you do not turn your homework in before class starts, it is a late. (Unless prior arrangements have been made.) 15. By entering the classroom you agree to follow all lab safety rules.

4 In order for this plan to have its greatest effect, I need your support. Please discuss this letter with your son/daughter. Thank you for your cooperation. Sincerely, Jennifer Lapierre Chemistry Jennifer.Lapierre@killeenisd.org Room 202 Conference period is 6th (2:30pm 3:10pm) period.
