1 Fact Sheet ETHOSAT Herbicide An aqueous Suspension Concentrate (SC) containing 500 g/litre ethofumesate ETHOSAT HERBICIDE is a herbicide for early post-emergence control of barley grass in pasture, grass weeds in ryegrass turf and for pre- and early postemergence weed control in beet crops. The active ingredient in ETHOSAT HERBICIDE is ethofumesate, a GROUP N sulfonate or benzofuran herbicide from the benzofuranyl alkylsulfonate group. ETHOSAT HERBICIDE is active pre-emergence through absorption by the emerging shoots of grass weeds and by the roots of broadleaf weeds soon after germination. Post-emergence treatments are initially absorbed through the foliage and later via the root. Lack of soil moisture and the presence of raw organic matter will reduce or prevent pre-emergence activity and reduce root absorption. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Caution: Apply this product carefully. Spray drift may cause serious damage to other desirable plants. BEET CROPS: CROP Red beet (Beetroot) Fodder beet, sugar beet COMMENTS RATE Pre-sowing or pre-emergence: Apply 3-4 litres/ha alone or in tank mix with GOLTIX HERBICIDE 1-4kg/Ha or GOLTIX FLO 1-4L/Ha to improve the weed control spectrum. Post-emergence: Use 4 litres/ha when weeds are from cotyledon to 2 true leaf stage. Please consult your Adama representative for further advice. Pre-emergence: Apply 2-3L/Ha alone or in tank mix with GOLTIX HERBICIDE 1-4kg/Ha or GOLTIX FLO 1-4L/Ha to improve the weed control spectrum. Post-emergence: Make 2 applications at 2L/ha in mixture with Rifle at 1.5L/Ha after the crop has 2 true leaves fully developed. Make the first application when weeds are from cotyledon to 2 true leaf stage and the second days later. Pre-sowing or pre-emergence: Apply before drilling or as soon as possible after drilling, but before crop or weed emergence. The seedbed should be firm, fine and moist. If moisture is limited, shallow (2-5cm) incorporation of pre-sowing treatment may be preferred. Use the highest

2 rate where moisture is limited or the seedbed is less than ideal. NOTES: 1. ETHOSAT HERBICIDE can be applied post-emergence following pre-emergence treatment with other herbicides. 2. RIFLE may be applied post-emergence to crops previously treated with ETHOSAT HERBICIDE pre-emergence. 3. Any crop may be sown 5 months after a single application of ETHOSAT HERBICIDE at recommended rates. Ploughing to a minimum depth of 15cm should precede seedbed preparation for following crops. A water rate of litres of water per hectare should be used at all application timings. TANK MIXING: For beet crops tank mixing with other beet selective herbicides such as GOLTIX HERBICIDE or GOLTIX FLO is recommended to improve the spectrum of weeds controlled. When using tank mixes, application may be made at any crop stage. However, take care not to compromise weed control. Some temporary leaf tip burn may occur under hot, dry conditions. If applying the full label rate with oil adjuvants, the beet crop must have developed two true leaves at least 1cm long. Rates of both ETHOSAT HERBICIDE and the tank mix partner may be varied according to local experience. May be tank mixed with clomazone pre-emergence in fodder beet. Refer to clomazone product label for precautions about soil type and use rates. Add GOLTIX, RIFLE or chloridazon to improve the spectrum of broadleaf weeds controlled. Chloridazon mixtures should not be used on red beet. Add clopyralid for clover, volunteer potatoes, yarrow, Californian thistle, other thistles and daisy group weeds. CROP CONDITIONS: Apply to healthy crops that are growing normally. DO NOT apply to any crop that is under stress from any cause. Stress can be caused by many factors (examples are listed below). In situations where more than one stress factor is present, the check to crop growth can be severe, possibly leading to some loss of crop and a reduction in yield. Nutrient deficiency: If a crop is suffering from a nutrient deficiency, ETHOSAT HERBICIDE may cause a check to the crop from which it may not fully recover. Correct any deficiency before ETHOSAT HERBICIDE treatment.

3 Pest or disease attack: If the crop has been damaged by pest or disease, application of ETHOSAT HERBICIDE may result in a check to growth from which it may not fully recover. Wind or hail: Physical damage can occur to the crop as a result of strong wind action, wind-blown soil and hail damage. In these circumstances wait until the crop has recovered before application. Light intensity: If crop is under stress for any reason, application under conditions of high light intensity may result in a check to growth from which it may not fully recover. Other herbicides: When used after other beet herbicides, the crop may be suffering from stress that is not always obvious or predictable. In this situation application of ETHOSAT HERBICIDE may result in a more serious check to growth than would be expected. GRASS CROPS: CROP RATE AND COMMENTS Barley grass control in pasture Boom application : 4 litres/ha in litres of water Gun application: 400ml/100 litres of water COMMENTS: For optimum results treat Barley grass growing in moist conditions at an early growth stage, but after the main germination has occurred. The normal timing is between April and July following autumn rain. However, this will vary by season and region. Before treatment remove fallen debris (e.g. branches) and harrow large dung pats. Graze to 3-5cm in height and allow freshening up. Complete coverage of barley grass is essential. ETHOSAT HERBICIDE will not control barley grass in the green seed head stage. Do not apply after July. Raw organic matter on stock camps will reduce efficiency and follow up treatments may be required... Grass weed control in ryegrass turf Note: In areas of dense barley grass where the sward contains less than 5% ryegrass, ryegrass seed should be sown as soon as possible after spraying. Boom application : 4 litres/ha in litres of water Gun application: 400ml/100 litres of water COMMENTS: Use only on ryegrass turf. To control Annual Poa follow the recommendations for barley grass control in pasture above. Do not mow treated area for 4-5 days after spraying. To control summer germinating annual grasses apply treatment just prior to expected germination of weeds, usually Sept-Oct. A repeat treatment may be required after 6-8 weeks. Over-sow with ryegrass following treatment of densely weed infested areas. Annual poa control in ryegrass seed crops FAR trials (Arable Herbage Update Nos. 18, 22 and 30) indicate application of ETHOSAT alone or ETHOSAT HERBICIDE followed by POLARIS will control annual poa in ryegrass seed crops.

4 Apply 1.5 l/ha ETHOSAT HERBICIDE. For optimum results treat as for barley grass at an early growth stage (2-3 leaf), but after the main germination has occurred. The normal timing is between April and July following autumn rain, but this will vary by season and region. The soil must be moist at application and 7-10mm of rainfall or overhead irrigation within 10 days of application is required to give best results. A follow-up application of POLARIS in the spring may improve results. For more information consult a FAR representative. GRASS SELECTIVITY: ETHOSAT HERBICIDE is very selective in ryegrass spp. in pasture and in turf. In grassland some slight check of the crop might be noted, but this is generally transient and quickly outgrown. In the UK ETHOSAT HERBICIDE is recommended for use on Italian, hybrid and perennial rye grasses, timothy, cock s-foot, meadow fescue and tall fescue, provided the crop has at least 2-3 leaves. CUTTING & GRAZING: Do not graze or cut grass for 14 days after applying ETHOSAT HERBICIDE. Grazing in winter after an autumn application can reduce control of grass weeds as crop competition is lowered. Where the sward is to be cut or grazed it is referable to do this before rather than after applying ETHOSAT HERBICIDE. TURF RYEGRASS: Owing to lack of competition, amenity ryegrass varieties grown for seed may need to be treated in the spring as well as in the autumn to give adequate control of weed grasses. CLOVER: Areas where clover production is important should not be treated with ETHOSAT HERBICIDE as temporary suppression can be expected. WITHHOLDING PERIOD Pasture 28 days: Do not graze stock on treated areas for 28 days after spraying. Beet crops 56 days. Do not graze stock on treated areas for 56 days after spraying... 5 APPLICATION: ETHOSAT HERBICIDE may be applied post-emergence whether traditional cultivations, minimum cultivations or direct drilling techniques are used. Weed control may be reduced where minimum tillage or direct drilling have been carried out. MIXING: Use only clean water which is above 5ºC temperature. Do not add surfactants when applying ETHOSAT HERBICIDE. Add the required amount to the partly filled spray tank with the agitator operating. Complete filling tank with water and use immediately, maintaining agitation until spraying is complete. For tank mixing add ETHOSAT HERBICIDE first and make sure each component is fully mixed in before adding the next. EQUIPMENT: Thorough and even application is essential. Apply only through properly calibrated boom spraying or handgun equipment. Do not use impact nozzles or broadcast nozzle cluster equipment. Non-reinforced PVC tubing may soften or swell after prolonged contact. Thoroughly clean sprayer after use with water and detergent. Spray out completely and rinse twice with clean water. Open tank lid and remove nozzles to allow access to air. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Do not spray when rain is imminent or falling. Slight rain following or heavy dew prior to spraying will not reduce the effect, providing it does not wash the chemical off the foliage. Do not apply when the air temperature is above 21 C or is likely to rise above this temperature on the day of treatment. In these situations wait for more suitable conditions (e.g. spray in the late afternoon or early evening), provided the temperature has dropped below 21 C. Do not apply during frosty conditions or if frost is forecast or likely to occur within 7 days of treatment. When a significant variation occurs between daytime and night temperature for a few days before or after application, the crop may suffer a check to growth from which it may not fully recover.

6 CROP FAILURE AND RESEEDED GRASS: Re-drill any time with beet root crops such as red beet or fodder beet. Ryegrass may be safely sown any time after ETHOSAT HERBICIDE treatment. Reseeding into established grassland: Delay application until the grass seedlings have at least 2-3 leaves and the crop is healthy. Cocksfoot, Timothy or Meadow fescue may be sown three months before or two months after the use of ETHOSAT HERBICIDE, provided conditions are suitable for the grass seeds to germinate. The over-sown grasses should be drilled, not broadcast. For all other crops wait until 5 months after application. Deep ploughing with surface working only before planting other crops may prevent damage. However, only try this if other alternatives are impractical and delay planting as long as possible. SOIL CONDITIONS: ETHOSAT HERBICIDE should not be used on sandy, very light soils containing a high percentage of stones, or on soils containing above 5% organic matter. Do not use ETHOSAT HERBICIDE on heavy soils. Sufficient soil moisture is necessary for residual activity. The seedbed should have a good tilth and be firm and free of clods. Ensure the soil is not acidic by correcting any lime deficiency prior to drilling, as ETHOSAT HERBICIDE may cause a growth check to crops on acidic soils. If rolling is required this should be carried out 7 days before or after using ETHOSAT HERBICIDE. Increase the interval if frost is expected. FARMYARD MANURE: If farmyard manure is to be applied before reseeding, ensure there is a gap of one month before ETHOSAT HERBICIDE is applied. Moreover, it should be buried by mould board ploughing. Do not apply slurry two months before or one month after ETHOSAT HERBICIDE is applied. IMPORTANT: This is not the registered label.
