2 ITINERARY Italy - calls to people in a unique way. The rich and colorful culture melts into a warm atmosphere filled with light and life. Ancient traditions combine with a spiritual pride expressed in the art and food that epitomize what we have come to know as La Bella Vita. There is something about this country that stirs the soul as much as it educates the mind. From Roman ruins to the richness of the Renaissance, from the ruins of war to the peace of country life, experience the world in a new way in beautiful Italy. Educational Tour/Visit Cultural Experience Festival/Performance/Workshop Tour Services Recreational Activity LEAP Enrichment Match/Training Session DAY 1 Wednesday, 28 June 2017 Relax and enjoy our scheduled flight from Seattle to Rome, Italy DAY 2 Thursday, 29 June 2017 Our 24-hour Tour Director will meet us at the airport and remain with us until our final airport departure. We will have use of a private coach and driver, while touring for the next five days. Our base for the next three nights will be in Campania, where breakfast and dinner will be provided at the hotel. The region of Campania is one of the most culturally diverse in Italy. Influenced by Roman, Greek, Byzantine, Norman, Spanish and French cultures, Campania is known for its gastronomy, music, architecture and divine beauty. DAY 3 Friday, 30 June 2017 During the course of our tour we will gain from the knowledge and insight of six half-day local guides while we are here in Italy. Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed, and completely buried, during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in AD 79. Explore the magnificent Roman ruins at Pompeii, which give a fascinating glimpse into Roman life. In 79 AD, the fury of nearby Mt. Vesuvius was unleashed upon this prosperous city, killing its 2,000 inhabitants and burying it under pumice and ash. Today, the excavations reveal the ruins of the city's amphitheatres, forum, baths, streets and splendid houses, some with their frescoes still visible. Finally we explore the Villa of the Mysteries outside the city walls. Enjoy a ride along the spectacular Amalfi Coast, undoubtedly one of the most scenic coastlines anywhere in the world. Sorrento is situated in the region of Campania one of the most culturally diverse areas in Italy. Influenced by Roman, Greek, Byzantine, Norman, Spanish, and French cultures, Campania is known for its gastronomy, music, architecture, and divine beauty. 1
3 DAY 4 Saturday, 01 July 2017 Capri is an enchanting and picturesque island made of limestone rock. A favourite with Roman emperors, the rich and famous, artists, and writers, it's still one of the Mediterranean's must-see places. Capri is an island of many contrasts. For some, it is a crowded maze of expensive boutiques. For historians, it is the palace-island of the Emperor Tiberius, dotted with neglected Roman remains. Ride the Funicular Railway up from the marina to the town of Capri. Visit Villa Jovis, an interesting ruin that was the estate from which Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire from 27 to 37 AD. From the ruins, we will enjoy a stunning view of both the Bay of Salerno and the Bay of Naples. Take a Boat Ride to the Blue Grotto, one of the best-known and most beautiful natural sights in Italy. The sun's rays are refracted through an underwater opening into the cavern, and the water turns to a stunning cerulean colour that seems to radiate from beneath us as we row inside. DAY 5 Sunday, 02 July 2017 Today we will travel from Campania to Rome. En route, we will stop in Naples and Herculaneum. Visit the ruins and excavations at Herculaneum, where people were working to repair damage caused by an earlier earthquake when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Herculaneum has not been completely excavated because it was buried under lava, which is much heavier than the ash and pumice that destroyed Pompeii. This proved to be beneficial, however, because the lava provided greater protection and preservation of the buildings underneath, many of which were more elaborately constructed than those at Pompeii. As the capital of the Campania region, Naples is known for its rich history, art, culture, and gastronomy. For 2,800 years Naples has reigned as a powerful and unique city. A visit today reveals the same distinctive way of life that has made it one of the great cities of Italy. Visit the National Archaeological Museum, one of the finest antiquities museums in the world. With its Roman and Greek sculpture, this museum contains one of Europe's most valuable archaeological collections, highlighted by the select Farnese acquisitions, and the mosaics and sculpture excavated at Pompeii and Herculaneum. For the next four evenings we will enjoy the convenience of our centrally-located Rome hotel, where daily breakfast will be included. Known to many as the "Eternal City", Rome is the capital of Italy, with an uninterrupted history spanning two and a half thousand years. As one of the founding cities of western civilisation, Rome is filled with incredible historical sites. It is a city with many faces, encompassing medieval, renaissance, and modern. To define Rome is an impossible task, but to enjoy Rome is a wondrous experience. In Rome, the cost of public transport is included for all group sightseeing. Escorted by our guide, we will be able to experience the city in the same manner as the local people. This evening, dinner will be provided in a local restaurant. DAY 6 Monday, 03 July 2017 Enjoy a guided tour, through the spectacular remains of the Roman Empire. The Colosseum, considered to be the greatest symbol of Ancient Rome's power and glory, was completed under Titus in 80 A.D. The Colosseum could hold 55,000 spectators, on a par with many of today's modern sports stadiums. Among the sights included is the Arch of Constantine, a triumphal arch finished in 315 A.D., commemorating the victory of Constantine I over Maxentius in the year 312 A.D. We will also tour the ruins and excavations of the Roman Forum, which features the remains of magnificent temples, basilicas, and triumphal arches that once formed the heart of the Empire. Enjoy a view of Trajan s Column and Market. Completed in 113 A.D. as a monument to the Emperor Trajan, the column is most famous for its spiral bas-relief. It stands in front of the market, the ancient equivalent of a shopping center, which housed no less than 150 shops and offices. From there, stroll past the Victor Emmanuel Monument, a giant building created to honor the first king of a unified Italy. 2
4 DAY 6 Monday, 03 July 2017 Visit the Castel Sant Angelo, originally built as Hadrian s mausoleum. It served as a fortress, prison, and a burial place for emperors before becoming a museum in It contains a historical military museum, paintings, rich ceramics, sculptures, and tapestries. Explore Chiesa di Sant Ignazio di Loyola, which together with Il Gesu form the center of Jesuit Rome. The vast interior is lined with precious stones, marble, stucco and guilt work and the cupola that was never built is a fake perspective. Visit the Pantheon, Rome's best-preserved monument. The Pantheon is a masterpiece of architecture with its huge hemispherical dome. It also contains the tombs of the kings of Italy and that of the artist, Raphael. This evening we will dine in the Piazza Navona area. Built on the foundations of Domitian's Circus, this magnificent square was designed by Borromini in 17th century. It is full of life and is highlighted by one of Rome's most spectacular fountains, the Four Rivers designed by Bernini. The square is often filled with local artists. The surrounding neighborhood is also one of the best places in Rome to get a tasty tartufo or gelato ice cream. DAY 7 Tuesday, 04 July 2017 Visit the Capitoline Museums, which house one of the greatest collections of classical sculpture in the world. Our visit includes the Picture Gallery, containing works from the 16th and 17th centuries by Caravaggio, Rubens, and Titian, among others. Visit the Circus Maximus, Ancient Rome's major chariot-racing venue, now ringed by several lanes of traffic. With a bit of imagination, we can visualize the flat base of the long, grassy basin as the racetrack, and the sloping sides as the stadium stands. Visit the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, famous for the Mouth of Truth set into the wall of the portico. This is a circular slab of marble with an engraved face and a slot for its mouth. Legend has it that, if a perjurer put his hand in the mouth and told a lie, his fingers would be bitten off! We take a Piazza della Bocca della Verita & Campo de Fiori Walking Tour, where we will view the Temples of the Forum Boarium, Ponte Romano, the Casa di Crescenzi, the Arch of Janus, the Arco degli Argentari, San Teodoro, the Theater of Marcellus, the Portico of Octavia, the Area Sacra dell Argentina, and Piazza Campo de Fiori. This evening, dinner will be provided in a local restaurant. DAY 8 Wednesday, 05 July 2017 Experience a specialist-guided tour of the Vatican City, including the Museums, home to one of the world's most impressive collections of art. Our tour includes the map tapestry rooms, the magnificent Raphael Rooms, and the spectacular Sistine Chapel, highlighted by Michelangelo's ceiling and his Last Judgment. We will continue into St. Peter's Square to visit St. Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the western world and the centre of Catholicism. Highlights of our visit include Michelangelo's Pieta and Bernini's magnificent Baldacchino over the high altar. Enjoy the famous Scavi Tour that enables participants to see the remains of St. Peter and the continuing efforts being made to gather additional artifacts and evidence from beneath the Vatican. This visit is by the group s own arrangements and expense. Explore Church of Il Gesú, the Mother Church of the Society of Jesus that was consecrated in 1584, 48 years after the Jesuits were recognized by the Pope in the Counter Reformation. Built in a style reminiscent of medieval churches, the nave is longer to exalt the altar, and no columns or pilasters were used, creating an open space where our attention falls on the altar. Explore St Ignatius Rooms in the Generalate, where Jesuit seminarians live. In these rooms, St Ignatius offered Mass in front of the painting of the Holy Family before he passed away. (Subject to availability) This evening we will dine near the spectacular Trevi Fountain where it is traditional to toss a coin into the fountain to ensure a safe return to The Eternal City. Spend time at Rome s meeting place, the Piazza di Spagna, home of the famous Spanish Steps. The piazza and steps are both named in reference to a 16th century Spanish ambassador who lived here. English poet John Keats lived and died in the house to the right of the steps, which is now a memorial. 3
