3 Package contents Remote control User s Guide Code List Features Operates up to three devices, including digital converter box Controls TV volume regardless of mode Setup 1 Install Batteries Remove the battery cover and insert two AAA batteries (not included) by matching the polarity symbols (+ / ) marked inside. Replace the battery cover. b Battery Notes: Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly. Do not burn or bury them. Use only fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type. Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries (alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of different capacities. If you do not plan to use your remote for more than a week, remove the batteries. Batteries can leak chemicals that can damage electronic parts. AAA AAA 3

4 Setup Device Keys Select a device to control: TV, STB, VCR/DVD. MUTE Press to mute the sound. SET Activate setup mode. INPUT Select video input. G Turn on /off a selected device. SLEEP Set the sleep timer for your selected device. Only works on devices with a sleep timer function. SCAN Browse channels. VOL+/ Increase or decrease the volume. MENU Display the menu for the selected device. EXIT Exit the selected device s menu, guide, or program. OK Confirm a setting in the Menu. Move the cursor through the program guide and menu screens. 0 9 Enter channel numbers. - - Access subchannels on a TV or receiver. LAST Recall the last viewed channel. ASPECT Select aspect ratio. CC Closed caption. CH+/ Select the next or previous channel. Select the next or previous chapter on some DVD players. Control your VCR or DVD player. These functions are the same as those on the device s original remote. Confirm a selection. 4

5 2 Setup Your universal remote can operate a TV, cable box, DVD player, or other A/V device. You can set up your universal remote in one of three ways: 1. Brand Code Setup: Directly enter the device code from the Code List. Try each code until you find one that works for your device. 2. Auto Code Search: Your universal remote automatically goes through all the device codes. (This method can take up to 45 minutes to search all the codes for the 4 devices.) Use this method if your devices s brand is not listed in the Code List, or if the Brand Code Setup doesn t work. 3. Manual Code Search: Manually goes through each code for your device one by one at the touch of the G button. n Note: Keep your remote pointed at the device that you want to program throughout setup. 6 Setup Brand Code Setup 1. Find the codes for your device in the included Code List. For example, if your device is a TV and the brand is RadioShack, from the Code List, select the RadioShack TV codes: 006, 010, 011, 013, etc. If your device s brand is not listed, go to Auto Code Search or Manual Code Search to find the code automatically. 2. Power on the device that you want to control. 3. On your universal remote, press and hold SET, then press a device key (TV, STB, VCR/DVD). The device key lights up and stays lit, indicating the remote is in setup mode. Release both buttons. n Note: Do not hold down the keys for longer than 3 seconds or the remote enters auto search mode. 4. Enter the 3-digit code for your device and brand. (For a RadioShack TV, for example, press 0 0 6) Pause briefly between each digit to make sure the remote receives all inputs. The device key flashes when a digit is received and turns off after the last digit entry indicating code is valid. 5. Try various keys to test the setup. If most of the controls function correctly, then you ve successfully setup your universal remote. 6

7 If some controls don t work properly, repeat steps 3-5 to try another code for your device. If you ve tried all the codes for your device in the Code List and your universal remote still does not work, follow steps under Auto Code Search or Manual Code Search. Setup nnotes: If the device key blinks then stays lit after the 3-digit code entry, the code number is invalid (does not match a code in the Code List). Repeat step 4 and try the next code for your device. To use a different type of device than what is labeled on the device key, follow the Copying Device Codes steps on page 13. If you ve entered a code and some of the keys on your new remote don t work, try the next 3-digit code listed for your device s brand. If you want to quit during device setup, press the device key or wait 10 seconds for the remote to exit setup automatically. If you are uncertain about your 3-digit code entry, follow Check Current Brand Code on page 11 to confirm your code. 7

8 Setup Auto Code Search In Auto Code Search, your universal remote automatically sends device codes to the device you want to control. If your device isn t listed in the Code List, or your remote doesn t work as described in Brand Code Setup, follow the steps below to automatically search for your device. 1. Power on the device that you want to control. For VCRs and DVD players, you must insert a tape or disc. 2. On your universal remote, press and hold SET, then press and hold a device key (TV, STB, VCR/DVD). Continue to hold down both keys for more than 3 seconds. The device key flashes and the universal remote starts searching. Release both buttons. nnotes: Because Auto Code Search requires you to stop the search, you must remain with the device during the process. To stop searching, press any key (except SET). The device key light turns off and search stops. 3. When the device responds in any way (switches off, play, pause, volume change, channel changes ), press any key other than SET within 2 seconds to confirm the code. The device key will stop flashing. 8

9 4. Try various keys to make sure they work. Press G on your universal remote to turn on the device if it turned off in step 3. If most of the buttons work in controlling your device, then you ve successfully setup your universal remote. If your device doesn t power on or some keys still don t work properly, repeat steps 2-4 to restart the search to set a suitable code. Manual Code Search In Manual Code Search, your universal remote sends codes to the device you want to control one by one at the touch of the G button. 1. Power on the device that you want to control. For VCRs and DVD players, you must insert a tape or disc. 2. Press and hold SET, then press a device key (TV, STB, VCR/DVD) on the universal remote. The device key lights up and stays lit, indicating the remote is in setting mode. Release both buttons. n Note: Do not hold down the keys for longer than 3 seconds or the remote enters auto search mode. 3. Press G on the universal remote. The universal remote enters manual code search mode and the device key flashes. Setup 9

10 Setup 4. Press G repeatedly on your universal remote until the device turns off. (Each press of the G key sends a different code to your device.) When the device turns off, the code is correct. Press the flashing device key on your universal remote within 10 seconds to confirm the code. 5. Press G on your universal remote to turn your device back on. 6. Try the other function keys. If most of the buttons work in controlling your device, then you ve successfully setup your universal remote. If some keys don t work properly, repeat steps 2-6 to try the next code for your device. nnotes: During a search, you can press SET to change search direction from forward to backward or vice versa. If no keys are pressed in 10 seconds, search stops. 10

11 Operation Check Current Brand Code For future reference and to save time if you ever need to set up your remote again, retrieve and write down your device codes for each device key on your universal remote. Complete the following steps to check the code number for a specific device. The device key on your remote will flash to indicate the codes. 1. Press the device key on your universal remote. 2. To check the first digit, press and hold SET, then press numerical key 1. The device key will flash repeatedly to indicate the first digit. (once for 1, twice for 2, etc. If the device key does not flash, this indicates that the first digit is 0. ) 3. To check the second digit, press and hold SET, then press 2. The device key will flash repeatedly to indicate the second digit. 4. To check the third digit, press and hold SET, then press 3. The device key will flash repeatedly to indicate the third digit. 12 Operation Lock Device Lock the device code in your remote so it doesn t get changed or deleted unintentionally. To lock in the code for your current device: 1. Press the device key that you want to lock on your universal remote. 2. Hold down SET, then press 7. The device key blinks twice. The code for the current device is now locked and cannot be overwritten. 3. To unlock the current device key, press and hold SET, then press 8. The device key blinks twice. n Note: The locked devices cannot be changed until you unlock the current device key or reset your remote. To unlock a code other than the current one, press that device key before following the step 3 to unlock the current device key. Lock Volume and Mute You can lock the volume and mute functions so they work only with one device. For example, if you ve locked the volume and mute functions to the TV device key on your 12

13 universal remote, you can only control TV volume, even if you are in STB or VCR/DVD modes. To lock the volume and mute functions: 1. Press the device key on your universal remote. 2. Hold down SET, then press 5. The device key blinks twice. The volume and mute keys are now locked to the current device. To unlock the volume and mute functions: You can unlock the volume and mute functions in any device modes. Hold down SET, then press 6. The device key blinks twice. Operation Copying Device Codes Program a device key to work with a different type of device than the one labeled. For example, you can use the STB device key to control your TV. To do so, copy the device codes from the TV device key (source device key) to the STB device key (mapped key). 1. Find the codes for the device you want to control in the included Code List. 2. On your universal remote, press and hold SET, then press the device key you want to reassign (in our example, STB). The key lights. 3. Press the device key to copy from the source device key (in our example, TV). The mapped (from step 2) turns off and the source device key lights. 13

14 Operation 4. Enter the new device s 3-digit device code (in our example, the TV code.) Pause briefly between each digit to make sure the remote receives all inputs. The device key flashes when input is received. If the code number is valid (matches one of the codes for your device), the source device key light turns off after the last digit entry. If the code number is invalid (does not match any codes for your device), the device key blinks then stays lit after the last digit entry. Repeat step 4 to try again. 5. Press various keys to make sure they work. When successful, each time you press a function key to control the newly programmed device, the original source key flashes first, then the new assigned device key flashes once and turns off. nnotes: If the codes were entered incorrectly, the device key flashes on and off twice and then stays on. Enter a correct code after the key flashes. Press the device key you want to change (for example, press STB if you were changing it to allow TV device codes) to exit code shift setting mode. Or, in 10 seconds, the remote exits setup mode automatically. If you perform a Brand Code Setup, Auto or Manual Search, copied device codes will be lost. You can use Lock Device function on your shifted device, but not other functions. 14

15 SCAN (Channel Browsing) 1. Press the device key you want to scan. 2. Press SCAN to browse through up to 30 channels. Press again to browse the next 30 channels. Repeat this step as many times as needed. 3. Press any key to stop scanning. Reset Your Universal Remote To restore your remote to factory settings, press and hold down SET and then press 0 until the current device key blinks three times. Operation 15

16 Additional Information Troubleshooting Problem I press SET and the appropriate key at the same time but the remote still doesn t work. I have tried all the codes under my device s brand, my universal remote still does not work. The device key doesn t turn off after I enter the 3-digit code during Brand Code Setup. Solution Press and hold SET, then press the appropriate key. The remote will not enter the desired mode if buttons are pressed in the wrong order. Use Manual Search or Auto Search to find the proper codes. If the device key light turns off after entering the last digit of the code, the code number is valid (matches a code in the Code List). If the device key blinks then stays lit after entering the last digit of the code, the code number is invalid (does not match a code in the Code List). Try the next code for your device. 17 Problem I can t get the remote to pair with my device The device recognized a code, but not all features work 17 Solution TVs and other devices may power off differently. Make sure you know how yours powers off so you can press the appropriate key at the correct time. Otherwise, the remote will not pair with the device and you will have to try again. Try all the 3 digital-device code one by one under the same brand until all or most keys work properly. Write down all the code numbers that work with your device, then try each until you find the best code. After testing and confirming the first recognized code and the features do not work as expected, start the search again to find a more compatible code. When searching for a more compatible code, the device will power off/on each time it recognizes a code. Ignore unwanted codes by waiting for the device to power off/on the second (or third, fourth, etc.) time, before pressing a button to confirm the code. Try all the 3 digital-device code one by one under the same brand until all or most keys work properly. Write down all the code numbers that work with your device, choose the best code as your set up code. Additional Info
