6 Introduction In December 2012, the Instituto Embratel was awarded a significant acknowledgement. UN s Public Information Department granted Associative Status to the Instituto Embratel, listing us as a corporate non-governmental organization that promotes ideals and principles supported by the UN s Letter. Instituto Embratel approval was granted at the Non-Governmental Organization Committee meeting organized by the UN s Public Information Department in December 17, As Embratel sees Social Responsibility as one of its institutional values, the Instituto Embratel its social arm understands that such recognition reaffirms its primordial goal of promoting and collaborating to the development and execution of projects and activities in culture, science, education, sport and social fields, emphasizing those with largest community scope. The Instituto Embratel was created in April 20, 2001 in Rio de Janeiro by the Brazilian Telecommunication Company (Embratel) and Embrapar as a nonprofit organization with national reach and eventually, overseas operations. In March 2003, Instituto Embratel was qualified by the Ministry of Justice as a Civil Society Organization of Public Interest (OSCIP by its initials in Portuguese) by the Law 9790/99. The OSCIP status legally accepts and recognizes civil society organizations which operate in the public space not covered by Government. Across our 11 years of operation, Instituto Embratel efforts ensure Embratel s Social Responsibility robustness in national scope and the commitment with social, sustainable development and democratization of access to information and knowledge. Still in 2012, Instituto Embratel has consolidated important partnerships that allowed for fulfilling notable projects that delivered effective digital and social inclusion. A significant example is the work with the Knowledge Square and Ships, a Science and Technology Special Secretariat of the City of Rio de Janeiro s project that received 34 MB dedicated internet access from the Instituto Embratel. 30 Meia Maratona Faz um 21 The Call 21 Half Marathon SPONSORED PROJECT This project was launched in November 2008 in Niteroi. December of that same year saw Petropolis hosting participants that ran through the charming Historical Center of the city. The event was consolidated and got traction from Currently, the event happens at the cities of Cabo Frio, Campos dos Goytacazes, Nova Iguaçu, Volta Redonda, São Gonçalo, Rio das Ostras, Teresópolis and Paraty, in addition to Niteroi and Petropolis. With the launch scheduled at 8:21 AM, the marathon has a differentiated format: it is organized in couples and each competitor runs 10.5 kilometers, totaling 21 kilometers. Both members start together and the winner couple is determined by adding both runners total time, which generates lots of expectations in the end, since being the first is not sufficing as it is necessary to expect the partner to perform well too. The Call 21 Half Marathon also relies on a chip computerized system, in which each runner is given at the event s day to meter the time. At the end of the run, by returning the chips, each runner can check the time elapsed and the ranking of the couple. The event provides the whole infrastructure for the well-being of participants, as water distribution, chemical bathrooms and ambulances ready to deliver service. The project is sponsored through the Sport Incentive Law ICMS/RJ. The Call 21 Half Marathon is a running project in its fifth year and which have gathered more than 6,000 participants. 30

31 With 8 kilometers both launch and arrival are located in the Copacabana beach, going through Leme communities. Rio Up Run SPONSORED PROJECT The Babilônia and Chapéu da Mangueira communities, in the South area of the city of Rio de Janeiro, hosted the Embratel Rio Up Run s second edition. The competition was the first run happening in the city s pacified communities. In addition to the competition, Embratel Rio Up Run also carried out social actions for dwellers in these communities, including a staff qualification course for sport events. This qualification aimed to prepare the region s inhabitants to work in events already scheduled as the 2013 Confederations Cup, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. The Rio Up Run is sponsored through the Sport Incentive Law ICMS/RJ. 31

32 Desafio dos Mares Challenge of the Seas SPONSORED PROJECT Challenge of the Seas had 250 attendees for the never seen before team relay competition that happened in Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro. The competition s format is innovative. There are 20 teams with six members that swim some 200 meters in a circuit delimited by buoys. Launch and arrival happens in the sand and are considered for the time. Each swimmer alternates with this teammate and concurrently they ring a bell strategically positioned, so the audience can keep track. The dynamic competition that prioritizes strategy also shows concerns with the environment. Embratel partnered with Green CO2 to ensure neutralization of gases released. Another important aspect is the deployment of garbage cans for selective collection of garbage and the support of the volunteer group Rio I Love I Care Movement. The Challenge of the Seas is sponsored through the Sport Incentive Law ICMS/RJ. 32

33 Corrida São Sebastião São Sebastião Run SPONSORED PROJECT The São Sebastião Run is Rio de Janeiro s most traditional sport event, part of the official sport calendar as determined by Decree It celebrated the saint of State of Rio de Janeiro. At the 2012 edition, 8,000 people joined to run over the 5-kilometer and the 10-kilometer circuits, starting from the Aterro do Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro. The project is sponsored by the Sport Incentive Law ICMS/RJ. Rei e Rainha da Praia King and Queen of Beach SPONSORED PROJECT The traditional King and Queen of Beach Embratel gathered the best of Brazilian beach volley to the 14 th edition in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro. The best players in this modality 16 in total participated on the individual competition in two weekends in a row. Women were the first to compete on February 18 and 19, during carnival. On February 25 and 26, it was time for men to fight over dominion at the sand edition crowned Alison and Vivian. Attendance to the event is always free. The project is sponsored by the Sport Incentive Law ICMS/RJ. Travessia dos Fortes Crossing of the Forts SPONSORED PROJECT For 10 years, the Crossing of the Forts event has consolidated as the main water marathon in Brazil. There are 3,600 meters in the Copacabana beach waters. The event was created in 2001 by the Water Sports Brazilian Confederation and the Brazilian Army to encourage young officials to practice swimming. In its first year, there were already 700 competitors, both military and civilians, participating of the event. Since the first edition, a total near to 20,000 swimmers have completed the crossing. In the 2012 edition, 2,500 people participated. The largest water marathon in Latin America, the Crossing of the Forts Embratel 2012 is sponsored by Embratel through the Sport Incentive Law ICMS/RJ. 33

34 Projeto de Braços Abertos With Open Arms Project SPONSORED PROJECT The With Open Arms Project uses sport as a communication platform in order to contribute to the social integration process. More than running within pacified communities, the project brings art, culture, entertainment and, mostly important, people for communities in Rio de Janeiro. The event, which is the largest in the history of the communities which it runs through, is always free for dwellers in the community hosting it, in order to encourage participation. Children are also part of the event s schedule: there are mini-runs (distances up to 1 kilometer, according to the age) with free enrollment for 500 small athletes from the host community. In addition to running, the event also offers cultural sweepstakes such as Photograph this Idea, where amateurs photographers are eligible to prizes for photos about their community. The Grafitti your Sport aims to transform the running circuit in a huge open air graffiti gallery. Aiming to mark a new era of peace in Rio de Janeiro, the With Open Arms Project tries to maximize the community s positive history, to generate differentiated experiences to all participants, to use sports as a communication tool for integrating the community and to rescue citizenship. The project steps occur in Rocinha, Vidigal, Manguinhos and Jacarezinho. With Open Arms is sponsored through the Sport Incentive Law ICMS/RJ. The event has a creative and participative format to serve all audiences: children and adults, experienced and newcomers. 34

The program s international philosophy was maintained, in the sense that every human being can be bettered, is able to improve and develop all their innate capacities through a continuous and permanent process of personal overcoming. The Human Development Program, created in 1980 by the Mexican civilian association ASUME A.C., aims to full realization of men in eight aspects: physical, emotional, social, economic, aesthetic, intellectual, moral, and spiritual. The Instituto Embratel made a financial donation to adapt and install dental equipment in a new vehicle owned by the Embratel Employee Committee, integrated to Action and Citizenship Program against hunger, misery and for life. The Committee delivers service to 19 institutions/ low income communities located in Rio de Janeiro and Baixada Fluminense through a Mobile Dental Unit, among other social activities. 39 Brigada Mirim Ecológica de Ilha Grande Ilha Grande Ecologic Child Brigade PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP The Ilha Grande Ecologic Child Brigade aims to preserve the island, keep beaches and trails clean and encourage education and the importance of environmental protection. It works with youngsters from 14 to 17 years old, who dedicate 3 hours daily to educational, social and environmental activities through financial aid. Activities are performed out of school time, tracking and expanding knowledge obtained at school. Brigadiers also have medical, dental, community and social follow-up. The Child Brigade provides youngsters with jobs, healthcare, education and citizenship, improving their background and enhancing exercise of their duties and rights as citizens. At the same time, in their activities, it delivers crucial services to preservation, social causes and tourism.

40 At the Ilha Grande Ecologic Child Brigade computing lab, satellite broadband Internet access, delivered by the Instituto Embratel, makes easy for Brigadiers to study. In three classes, they got together for one hour from Wednesday to Friday to attend collectively the social-educational courses offered by GESAC, developed and elaborated by the Instituto Embratel. During the activity month, computing contents and self-learning tools were used as foundations for debates and dialogues to enhance knowledge. The computing lab was also used for school papers and research. + Criança na Rio Child at Rio + 20 PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP In the third week we have started the Open Office Winter module. After the study class on GESAC CD-ROM, we could see in practice how the text processor works. The desktop and the main toolbars were shown. We worked hard on these topics until all could understand well how Open Office Winder basically works. From there we started to train typing, which was useful as there were some that knew how to use some keyboard basic functions. After typing, the Brigadiers were introduced to text formatting, facing some hardships at the start but these were overcame with a lot of training. Rodrigo de Oliveira Chagas ILHA GRANDE ECOLOGIC CHILD BRIGADE SUPERVISOR Supported by the Instituto Embratel, the + Child at Rio + 20 Project promoted by the Xuxa Meneghel Foundation gathered 90 children from 6 to 12 years old from June 13 to 23. The goal was to draft the Letter from Children to the Earth to be presented at the Humanity Space in Forte do Copacabana in June 22. The document was handed to the organizers of the Rio + 20 Conference. The children group was formed by representatives from communities all over Brazil; including those living by rivers, from former slaves, located in the borders, in the semi-arid, children with impairment and from large urban centers.
