AIA Iowa #A203 Market One: Case Study Workshop Session 3 - #16, PE 10/16/2015
Credit(s) earned on completion of this course will be reported to AIA CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-aia members are available upon request. This course is registered with AIA CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.
Course Description SAMPLE SLIDE Energy efficiency has long been a goal of designers everywhere, but until recently, designing a building that produces more energy than it uses has been reserved for power plants. With a creative application of today's technology, that dream of a "Net-Zero" building can be a reality. This presentation will outline the strategies implemented at Market One, Iowa's first Net-Zero office building, including solar power production, high efficiency LED lighting, geothermal and other highly efficient HVAC solutions, as well as architectural coordination to reduce baseline energy consumption.
Learning Objectives SAMPLE SLIDE At the end of the this course, participants will be able to: 1. Building Systems - Specifically in the category of MEP. The goal is to reduce energy consumption by the systems that are necessary to run an office building. 2. Environmental - Specifically Energy Efficiency and Sustainability. To achieve a net-zero status, energy producing strategies were required to obtain a sustainable design. 3. Preservation - Market One is renovation of a 114 year old building, which required significant coordination to achieve a energy efficient design. 4. Health -A lighting system was implemented that mimics the natural circadian light patterns of the day, helping occupants to feel as though they are working in a more natural environment.

Circadian Responsive Lighting Lighting responds to the daylight color helping to adjust melatonin levels of the staff throughout the day.
Exterior Tree Uplights Exterior tree uplights change colors seasonally to respond to the leaf color of the trees and what will render them the best.
80% of the building is dimmable thru manual controls for staff comfort and flexibility. All lighting is controlled with occupancy sensors to further minimize energy use.
Energy Recovery Ventilation System
Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) exchanges the energy contained in a normally exhausted building and uses it to treat the incoming outdoor ventilation air in residential and commercial HVAC systems.
The 100% fresh air Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) utilizes a Geothermal 4-stage direct expansion coil for heating and cooling.
Geothermal Wells: 18 Depth: 265 feet Use: Condition ventilation air via water-dx coil in the ERV and water-air heat pumps in basement.
The ERV is designed to be operable during non-occupied hours in recirculation mode to recovery energy and provide supplemental heat for the building in the winter months.
The ERV uses Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) to move energy throughout the building. This method is extremely efficient.
