Dates: Monday, June 27 - Friday, July 22 Time: 8:30 am - 12:20 pm, Monday through Friday Program will be closed Monday, July 4 th Place: Huntington High School Oakwood Road Cost: $135 per course (includes a SCALE T-Shirt) Deadline: Registration deadline Friday, May 27 th Secure your spots early first-come, first-served!! Refunds: Refund deadline - Friday, June 10 th All payments are non-refundable after June 10, All refunds issued prior to June 10 th will incur a $10.00 processing fee. ELIGIBILITY NEW for incoming 3 rd graders welcome! Courses open to students entering grades.** Students from surrounding school districts are welcome, provided they supply their own instrument. **Teen Portfolio Course is open to grades 9-12 only. SCHOLARSHIPS Harlie Treanor Memorial Scholarship Fund: Two full-time scholarships will be awarded to Huntington School District students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Please contact Nicole Lynch, Program Director, at SCALE@scopeonline.us for scholarship application and additional scholarship information. SECURING AN INSTRUMENT* *Out-of-District students will need to secure instruments from their home district. Huntington School District owns the instruments listed below, which may be rented for a maintenance fee of $40 (covers summer and upcoming school year) Cello, Bass, Saxophone, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba & Percussion. Free lunch students are provided with district owned instruments at no charge for the first year of instruction. Contract, payment and pick up information will be sent to new students in June. The district does not provide violins, violas, flutes, clarinets or trumpets. These instruments may be rented or leased from local music stores. Store rentals must be secured prior to the first day of the program. Online registration is available and highly recommended to ensure your child s placement. 3 2016 COURSE OFFERINGS Courses are listed for the grade level the student is entering in September Period 1: 8:30am - 9:20am Period 2: 9:30am - 10:20am Period 3: 10:30am - 11:20am Period 4: 11:30am - 12:20pm Music Course Descriptions Beginner Piano - Period 2 ( ) This course is for students with no prior piano training as well as students with little experience. Students will learn note reading as well as how to improve upon their playing using dynamic and articulation markings. Students will use electric keyboards in the music lab so that each student may progress at their own pace. Intermediate Orchestra - Period 4 ( 5-6*) Looking to improve your technique and playing skills on your string instrument? Then this is the place for you! This course is open to students who have at least one year of experience playing an orchestra instrument. Students will have the opportunity to play many genres of music in a performance group setting while enhancing their skills. *Students should speak with their school orchestra teacher about their orchestra placement. ROCKestra! - Period 3 ( 7-9*) Do you have a favorite pop or rock song? Come join the ROCKestra for an opportunity to play pop and rock music on your string instrument. Featuring music by current artists in combination with Jazz, Fiddle Music and Chamber pieces. The ROCKestra is open to students who have had experience in the Intermediate Schools Advanced Orchestra or Finley Orchestra. Students will put on a final performance at the end of the program for all to hear! *Students should speak with their school orchestra teacher about their orchestra placement. Intermediate Band - Period 3 ( 5-7) This course is open to students entering grades 5-7 who have one or more years playing experience. It provides the student with an opportunity to improve his/her playing techniques in a performance group setting. Jazz Band & Improvisation - Period 4 ( 6-9) This course presents the essential elements of jazz performance, including basic technique of style, phasing and simple improvisation. Beginner Band & String Lessons -SEE SCHEDULE-Period based on instrument choice ( ) This course is provided for students who wish to learn how to play the violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French Horn, trombone, baritone, tuba or percussion. This is a beginning level course designed for students who have NEVER played the instrument and have been assigned this instrument by their school music teacher. Lesson book is provided. Musical Theater - Period 1 ( ) Learn songs and scenes from a Broadway show. Students will be singing and acting in this creative class as we prepare for a small performance. All students are encouraged to sign up for this course regardless of acting/singing experience. Ukulele Jam Band Period 4 ( )* Want to learn how to play the Ukulele? Then this is the class for you! Ukulele Jam Band is a great place to learn how to play the Ukulele in a fun group setting. All participants will learn how to play several traditional and popular songs on their Ukuleles. They ll be some singing, hand percussion and a lot of Ukulele-ing in this exciting class! *All students must provide their own Ukulele in order to participate. Ukulele Jam Band II Period 3 ( )* This course is open to students in grades 5+ who participated in the Ukulele class last summer or have a basic knowledge of the Ukulele. Ukulele Jam Band is a great place to learn how to play the Ukulele in a fun group setting. All participants will learn how to play several traditional and popular songs on their Ukuleles. They ll be some singing, hand percussion and a lot of Ukulele-ing in this exciting class! *All students must provide their own Ukulele. Flute Ensemble - Period 2 ( ) Come and explore the unique world of the flute family while learning new flute warm-ups and new technique/tone exercises specific to the flute. Students will be working on duets, trios, quartets and other chamber pieces created especially for flutists. Parts will be written and distributed so that older students have challenging technical parts while beginning players will play parts appropriate for their reading level. Music will consist of classical, popular selections and folk tunes. Electronic Music Composing Period 1 ( ) Everyone can be a composer in this course! Students with little or no music reading skills will learn to create their own compositions in our music lab using simple programs like Soundation for Education" and Garage Band. Students will have a cloud based music software account in which they can even work on their creations from any computer! Glee Club! - Period 2 ( ) Come lend your voice to the Glee Club! In this course, we will be singing a wide variety of music and some Glee-inspired songs as well. You will learn about the different voice parts that make up a choir, and learn how to sing in harmony. Whether you enjoy classical or pop music (or anything in between), you're sure to find something that you like!

In this course, actors play games, learn how to walk, talk and listen on stage. Improvisation, small scenes and monologues will be explored. Bring your most fun and creative personalities to the stage and be ready to have lots of fun! Pop & Show Tunes Vocal Workshop! - Period 4 ( ) Students will enjoy the benefits of vocal training as well as learn a solo vocal piece. The class will learn a variety of NYSSMA solos, in addition to Pop and Broadway repertoire. The program includes solo performance technique as well as how to assess oneself when performing. Have fun while receiving professional vocal coaching! Visual Art Course Descriptions Period 1, Period 2, Period 3 & Period 4 ( ) Students will learn how to hand build exciting projects with ceramic clay. Vases, coil pots, name plates, picture frames and animal forms will be fired to a stone-like hardness in the kiln and painted by the students in a variety of glazes. The projects will be fired a final time to bring out a colorful, glasslike finish. Approximately three full projects will be completed. Polymer Clay Period 1 & Period 2 ( ) Have fun with this awesome clay that can be sculpted, carved, stamped, textured and used to create many different kinds of fun and useful objects. Learn the secrets of building multi-colored polymer "canes" to produce amazing checkerboard, spiral and geometric patterns for your unique creations! Painter s Palette - Period 3 & Period 4 ( ) Get ready to explore the creative possibilities of painting! In this course you will learn about color theory and explore different painting techniques. Acrylic paints, temperas, & watercolors will be used to create a variety of fun and interesting art projects including those ever-so-popular canvases! Modern Jewelry Making Period 1 & Period 2 ( ) Who doesn't love a fantastic bracelet, especially one that you create yourself!? In this course, students will learn how to work with and create bracelets out of leather, beads, metal, clay and so much more. Come prepared to work, and learn new techniques for filling your arms with beautiful works of art. Chalk it Up! Painting with Annie Sloan Period 3 & Period 4 ( ) World recognized Annie Sloan Chalk Paint can easily be used to transform many things. In this course, students will learn the basic beginning steps to working with Annie Sloan. They will use the one to two color application process - painting frames, initials, decorative boxes and more. They will then learn how to distress and finish a piece. Students will also work collectively on one large piece of furniture that will then be donated to the school. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to have fun! Digital Photography - Period 3 & Period 4 ( ) Master important shooting and composition skills with hands-on demonstrations and photo lessons. In the classroom you ll discover the power of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to further enhance images through professional photo-editing and graphic-design techniques. Students must supply their own digital camera (which should be clearly labeled with name & number). Cartooning - Period 1 & Period 2 ( ) Ever wished you could create your own cartoons? Well, now you can! This course will be an introduction to classic cartooning storytelling techniques and illustrations. Students will work on creating a range of different types of characters from superhero to manga-characters. Play Chess with the LI Chess Nuts! - Period 3 & Period 4 ( ) Students will learn basic moves, strategies and techniques in the game of chess; our fast learners and students who are already familiar with the game will move to more advanced playing techniques. Lessons will teach students how to play the game, and once learned, how to then improve their playing. After lessons, students will play each other, while being supervised and coached by the teacher. Teen Portfolio Course ** 9-12 only!!** **Please note: this course runs from 9:30-12:20 and costs $ Are you a high school student looking to sharpen your art skills? Using media such as charcoal, paint, colored pencil, conte crayon and pencil, students will be able to grow as artists while creating a collection of works to strengthen and develop their skill set. This course will concentrate on observational drawing and media exploration in a relaxed and fun environment! This course is ideal for the student putting together a college portfolio, building a breadth section for AP, or any art loving student looking to further their craft! We welcome any student interested in 2-D work and due to the intimate class size, projects can be tailored for what you may need in your portfolio! Putting together a portfolio on one s own can be a daunting task - instead come enjoy a creative and fun summer experience!
