1 UNIT 1: Know God LESSON 1: Bible Information. This page is for teacher preparation and not for presentation to children. Bible Story: Creation (Genesis 1) Bible Verse: the earth God saw all that Lesson Objectives: In this lesson students will come to KNOW: That God created everything in the earth and universe. That God made everything good. Students will be invited to DO the following: To discover the wonder of God s creation by studying actual items in nature (in class or out of class). To respond by praising God for his marvelous creation. Prepare to Teach This Lesson. PRAY and ask God for guidance as you consider how to apply this lesson to your own life and to the lives of your students. Ask God for wisdom and ideas. READ the scripture references and story in your Bible. Read the story outline. CHOOSE the optional activities you wish to present. You may not have time for them all. Adapt and make adjustments for your own setting and children. GATHER MATERIALS you will need as you teach. Substitute items as needed. Your children may already have learned that God created the heavens and the earth. But have they considered why this is so important? Have they taken time to reflect upon the wonder of his creation? Have they thought about their place in God s creation? With today s lesson, you have the privilege of strengthening your children s understanding of God as their wonderful Creator, thanking him that ALL he made is good. 2 UNIT 1 Lesson 1 KNOW GOD (Genesis): Welcome & Introduction (5-10 minutes). Set up before students arrive. Warmly welcome each one to your class, including visitors. Variation Note: If possible, give one leaf or item from nature to each child. Use whatever is available. Materials: an interesting leaf for examination (or other item from nature) WELCOME: Welcome students. Introduce yourself and the other leaders. INTRODUCE THE LESSON: A Leaf Invite children to look closely at a leaf or other interesting item from nature. What do you notice as you look closely? The leaf has lines, designs, cells, patterns, etc. Next, invite children to look at their hands. What do you see there? Skin, cells, fingernails, patterns of different kinds. Who made the leaf? Who made your hands? God did. God made the leaf, every other plant, every animal, every person and everything else in the whole earth. The delicate designs and patterns in the leaf and in our hands help us to see that these were planned. These were not created by accident. Who created them? They were designed and created by God. OPENING PRAYER: Invite students to bow their heads as you talk to God. Ask him to help your students learn about God s incredible work of creating the earth and the universe, and how he made everything good. & Music (15-20 minutes). Materials (optional): musical instruments, music player, song words Enjoy singing several favorite songs together. Be sure to explain new words and concepts, especially for newcomers. Choose songs related to Creation, God s power, God s goodness, etc. ) Object-Demonstration (10-15 minutes). Enjoy involving as many children as possible in this demonstration. Page 1-4 OBJECT LESSON: Create a Phone Materials: an old telephone, clock, radio or other electronic item, disassembled in a bag (or parts to look like they belong to one of these inventions) Lesson Aim: To show that although the earth is made up of some simple materials, it could not have come together by itself; God created it. Show the bag to your students. If a tray is available, dump the contents out for all students to see. Notice all the pieces. Realize that these are the parts to a phone (or other invention of technology). Place the pieces in the bag. Ask your students if they think the pieces can be put together to work again. Shake the bag. Give everyone in the class or several volunteers a chance to shake the bag. Check inside. Is the item assembled? Is it even partly together? No! Can the phone ever come together by shaking? Why not? Because a phone must be carefully assembled by someone who is trained to do it properly. He must know how the pieces are designed and then put them together in exactly the right way. In what way is this like the creation of the universe? It is so complicated, perfect, and intricate that it could not possibly come together as the result of an unplanned explosion. The earth shows signs of being carefully designed and crafted to work together in perfect order, even better than a phone. What does the Bible teach about the creation of the world? Did it come together by accident? No. God created it. And he made everything good. Lesson Note: What difference does this make to kids? We can personally talk to the One who made the universe and us. If he has power to create this beautiful, perfect planet home for us, he can certainly help us with our lives.

3 KNOW GOD (Genesis): UNIT 1 Lesson 1 Bible Verse (15-20 minutes). Materials: an erasable board or paper with verse written out Help your TEACH & EXPLAIN: Genesis 1:1, 31a (briefly discuss the verse together) students really In the beginning Before there were stars, before there were planets, before understand the the earth or the sun or the moon, before time, before people, before onecelled animals, before it all God existed! verse. If possible, keep verses from week God created the earth He planned, designed, formed and to week in a created every single thing in the universe and on the earth. These did not basket or bag for come about by accidental explosion. They did not happen over billions of review. years, by evolution. God created them. God saw all that he had made God is able to be everywhere. He is able to look at all of his creation. How big is his creation? Huge, enormous. Scientists cannot see to the ends of the universe even with the most powerful telescopes. and it was very good In the Bible, good does not just mean average. It means as good as God or perfect. God could not have created it better. REPEAT: Write the verse on an erasable board or on cards (each with one or two words). Display the verse. Instruct students to repeat the verse, with volunteers removing one or two words after each repetition. Choose volunteers who can: Name something God created that is good. Name something with a beginning and an end. NOTE: If board or cards are not available, spend more time with review activity. REVIEW FUN: Around the Earth Arrange students in a large circle. Choose one student to start. Invite each student to say the next word in the verse, taking turns around the circle, child after child, until every word has been repeated. Do it again, faster and faster. Lesson note: God made the earth and everything in it. Do you think he did a good job? Why do you think so? Bible Story (20-25 minutes). Materials: a Bible and your lesson notes an empty bowl BIBLE REFERENCE(S): Genesis 1 WORDS TO WATCH: universe the sun, planets, stars, and everything else beyond our earth creation all that God created (land, animals, universe, people, plants, etc.) good Bible word for good means perfect, not just ordinary INTRODUCTION (for students) Invite a student to come forward to examine and touch the ingredients you have in your bowl. Notice the invisible air. Isn t this beautiful? Most students will not see the beauty. Could you make something beautiful from the ingredients in the bowl? Notice that the ingredients in the bowl do not look like anything special at all. In fact, there is nothing in the bowl. We cannot see the ingredients, but air (that we all breathe) has elements that God used to create the earth (nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, etc.) With these materials, and some other elements in dirt, God made everything we find on the earth. How did he do it? Was it hard for him to do? The Bible tells the story. Let God speak to you as you prepare. This story is in outline form to highlight key points. Teach the lesson in your own words. Involve students wherever possible. If a Bible chart is available, show which book of the Bible this story is from. Also, show students. Page 1-5

4 UNIT 1 Lesson 1 KNOW GOD (Genesis): THE BIG PICTURE If you ask a child to tell you what the story of the Bible is about, he or she may tell you that there are many stories. But there is just one. Who is the main character? Read the first verse of the Bible to find out: God. All the stories of the whole Bible are about him and his plans to make himself known to all the peoples of the earth. It starts with creation. It ends in heaven with multitudes praising him as the Creator and giver of life to all the earth. Enjoy his story today. Adaptation Note Some children may not have been introduced to science concepts (universe, planets). Give extra explanations as needed or use simpler words (moon, stars, etc.) If you have enough helpers or older students, you may be able to divide into small groups for discussion and prayer. Expect to give extra time if choosing this option. A. In the beginning, God made the earth. 1. To begin with, everything was a mess. There was no shape, there was no center, there was no order at all. (Invite several children to come forward and move around randomly as if before creation.) 2. Then God created the earth. (Read Genesis 1:1) 3. The earth is huge and round. (Guide several students to hold hands in a large earth circle.) The earth spins in just the right way through space. 4. God put it just the right distance from the sun so we would not be too hot or too cold. If it were positioned any differently in space, we could not live. He made it perfect. (Say, It was good, together.) B. The Bible tells us God made the earth in seven days. 1. Day 1 He created light, separating light from darkness. (Read Genesis 1:3-5) 2. Day 2 He created sky and waters. (Read Genesis 1:6-8) What beautiful things are made of water? The oceans, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, ponds, rain, clouds and more. (Say, It was good, together.) 3. Day 3 He created land, seas and plants. (Read Genesis 1:9-13) God separated the water from the land and made it beautiful. What do we see on the land? Mountains, deserts, beaches, dirt (for plants to grow), sand, valleys, plains and more. (Invite one student at a time to become one of these in the center of your earth circle until everyone is an earth creation.) 4. Day 4 He created sun, moon and stars. (Read Genesis 1:14-19) God made stars, planets, sun, and moon. (Create the universe by assigning children to stand as sun, moon and stars around the room.) He has great power to make these big things. 5. Day 5 He created birds and fish. (Read Genesis 1:20-23) Together, name birds and fish that God created. (Make bird noises together.) 6. Day 6 He created animals and people (man and woman). (Read Genesis 1:24-27) Name several animals that God created. C. Did God do a good job? 1. Yes! He made everything good. (Say, It was good, together.) 2. Read Genesis 1:31. Application & Prayer (10 minutes). STUDENT APPLICATION QUESTIONS What can the smartest person you know create in one week? Listen to some fun ideas children might have. God created the heavens, the earth, and everything in them. It was not hard for him. He simply spoke it into being. What does this teach you about God? He is powerful. He is smart. He is amazing. We also know that God is loving. He created all the plants that people and animals would need to live. He created it all. PRAYER: Praise God Teach: When we hear about God s power to create the earth, we want to tell someone. We want to celebrate that he is good, smart, wonderful, powerful and that he created each of us, too. He is so good. Listen: What would you like to praise God for today? Listen to several children give different answers to this question. Pray: Pray for any requests you know about. (List these in a prayer booklet, if you have one.) Also praise God for the items your children mentioned above. Thank God for making the earth and for making it so good. Praise him for his incredible power. And thank him for loving each one of your students. Page 1-6

5 KNOW GOD (Genesis): UNIT 1 Lesson 1 C Activities & Review (10-15 minutes each). GAME OPTION: Separate Land and Water Materials: musical instruments or player Divide the students into two groups. Assign each group to a home base on a different side of the room. Ask one group to pretend to be the land. Let some act as mountains, others as beaches, some as valleys, etc., arranging themselves in the center of the room while music plays. Invite the other group to pretend to be water. They can swirl, swish, flow, etc., around the land while the music plays. When the music stops, each group must return to their own side as quickly as possible. Play several rounds. Lesson Note: God separated the land and water. He knew we would need water to drink and wash. He knew we would need land to live on. He is so good! ACTIVITY OPTION: What Do You See? Materials: Bible; photos of the universe (optional) Read Psalm 19:1. People can see the earth and sky that God made. What they see teaches them about God. What might the universe teach us about God? Invite pairs of students to examine illustrations of the universe. Or go outside and look at the sky, the sun, etc. and answer the same question. Ask each pair to report at least one truth people might learn about God from studying the sky. Discover: It is big God must be big. It is orderly Planets do not bump into each other or drop out of orbit. God must be orderly and smart. It shows awesome power (the sun fuels just about everything on earth in one way or another) God must be very powerful to make the sun. It is interesting and beautiful (Saturn s rings, sunshine, stars are all beautiful) God must be very beautiful and interesting. Even if people have never read the Bible or gone to church, the wonder of the universe could show them that God is real. They can clearly see his eternal power and divine nature. Whether people believe in creation or not, the Bible teaches that they can look at the earth and sky and see evidence of God s existence. Lesson Note: What do you see when you look at the stars and the universe? How does God s creation make you feel about him? Choose one or two activity options that fit your students and your time. Continue to teach and love your students as you enjoy these activities together. Adaptation Note If a music player is not available, have a child play drums or a rhythm instrument in a corner of the room instead. Use whatever you have available! Closing (5 minutes). REVIEW OPTION: Days of Creation Game Ask questions to Materials: two sets of Days of Creation Cards (see page 1-42) help children Play a review game with two teams (girls versus boys or left side of room versus summarize what right, etc.). Give each team a chance to answer a question about the day s lesson. they have learned. As they get the answer correct, the team earns one Days of Creation card. The Send home any first team to win a full set of all the Days of Creation Cards wins. When finished, papers, projects or reminders with read all the days together. Celebrate the goodness of God to create the earth. students (and NOTE: If paper is not available, use 7 stones per team to represent the days of gather belongings). creation. Teams earn one stone for each correct answer. Review the days of Close in prayer creation together. Give any last announcements. AFTER CLASS Remind children Evaluation: How did your lesson go? Did children understand what was how much you presented? What will you want to discuss again in your next meeting together? enjoyed them! Preparation: Begin to pray and think about next week s lesson and Bible story early. What else do your students need to know? How will you help them? Page 1-7
