5 Case: Stonecutters Bridge, Hong Kong A milestone in bridge engineering Stonecutters Bridge is one of only two cable-stayed bridges in the world with a span of more than one kilometre and as such marks a major milestone in bridge engineering. Contributing are also the bridge s two towers, the upper sections of which are formed from a composite section of reinforced concrete and duplex plate from Outokumpu. Our customer wanted the bridge to last beyond 120 years, and whilst carbon steel delivered adequate structural strength, it could not deliver the durability. The choice of polished plate of duplex grade Outokumpu 2205 for the upper towers ensured that the bridge would withstand the hot and humid climate and also minimise the need for maintenance, thereby translating into low costs over time. 5

6 Roll out the potential. We deliver cut-to-length coil up to two metres wide. Large sizes efficiently cut Cutting coil to length is the main activity of our service centre and our ability to process coil up to 2 metres wide and 15 metres long offers a distinct source of competitive advantage. A high degree of flatness as well as quick, precise and accurate cutting of large sizes are ensured by our machines. The capabilities of our line include cutting 1-13 mm thick duplex stainless steel and up to 15 mm thick austenitic coil. 7 Case: Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard Weight savings and more for chemical tankers The Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard relies on Outokumpu duplex stainless steel for the storage wall panels of the chemical tankers it designs and produces. The corrugated plates for the panels are built from duplex plate Outokumpu 2205, which are delivered with ready profiles and edge preparations for quick assembly and ease of welding on site. Training on welding has also been provided for employees at the shipyard. Overall, the weight savings resulting from the use of duplex over austenitic stainless steels can reach 30%. Outokumpu s polished duplex stainless steel plate requires no coating, with further savings derived from the easy cleaning, corrosion resistance and long life of the material. 7

8 Versatile capabilities Our laser-cutting machine, which is among the world s most advanced, delivers extreme accuracy in cutting materials of complex profiles and thin stainless steel sheet. With a cutting thickness range of 1 mm to 25 mm, the machine delivers exceptional neatness without causing added pressure to the components. In general, there is no need for additional processing, which paves the way for improved production efficiency. Complex contours. 9 Case: Port of Fangcheng Innovative tank farm for the storage of liquid chemicals Gold Bridge Shipping Ltd (Hong Kong) is building a major terminal for the storage of liquid chemicals in Guangxi Province, on the extreme southwest coast of China. LDX 2101 as well as the duplex grade Outokumpu These grades have similar corrosion resistance and also twice the strength of competing austenitic grades, which translates into significant cost savings due to the possibility to reduce tank wall thickness. In addition, the use of proprietary 2,000 mm x 10,400 mm sheets from Outokumpu delivered design improvements as well as faster welding and erection on site. Chosen for the tanks were custom-sized plates of the lean duplex stainless steel grade Outokumpu 9

10 No further processing. Our water-cutting equipment cut thick plates with precision. Making the perfect edge Our water-cutting equipment are capable of handling large and thick stainless steel plate to absolute precision. This covers plate mm in thickness with processing capability up to 6 metres long and 3 metres wide, hence producing a perfect edge. A further advantage is that water-jet cutting process does not cause any form of metal oxidation, nor does it lead to any residual stress and heat-affected areas. Therefore, customers can have a service that has the best value for money, eliminating the need for secondary processing that can often be very costly and time consuming. 10

11 Case: Hainan PM2 Record setting paper machine Hainan PM2, operated by Hainan Jinhai Pulp & Paper Industry Co. Ltd, has the capacity to produce a million metric tons of fine paper a year, which made it the world s largest fine paper machine upon its inauguration in Outokumpu was chosen by Voith of Germany to deliver all of the stainless steel for the project, covering 2,000 tons of flat and rolled products and steel enhancement tube. These were of austenitic grades Outokumpu 4401 (316), Outokumpu 4571 (316Ti) and 4301 (304). Hainan PM2 marks the largest collaboration between Outokumpu and Voith to date. 11
