Initial Teacher Training at THE ARTHUR TERRY teaching SCHOOL Part of THE ARTHUR TERRY TEACHING SCHOOL ALLIANCE
Our commitment to Initial Teacher Education goes beyond one school, with a partnership of 12 schools contributing to the training. National College Specialist Leaders of Education from across the Alliance of Schools deliver sessions that explore the topics that really matter to training teachers. These outstanding, creditable professionals are aware of the current pedagogies that work in the classroom. We are so confident that we develop the best Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs), that we look to appoint as many of them across our Alliance as possible. Simon Roberts (Director of ) The Arthur Terry Alliance Philosophy You get a real feel for school life in all aspects of the course. Corrina Haycox (Associate Teacher, Drama) The core philosophy of our course is to develop new entrants to the profession, who have the ability to inspire the children of our schools with their subject knowledge, delivered through challenging and engaging teaching strategies. As a school-centred course, our contemporary programme of study designed by teachers for teachers allows the Associate Teacher to experience different schools across our Alliance. Associate Teachers will be immersed in the ethos of our schools and build up relationships with both colleagues and students. Using positive behaviour for learning strategies and an awareness of data, Associate Teachers will learn to become skilled and experienced classroom leaders. Our Associate Teachers follow a lesson study model that allows them to develop in pairs, by working alongside an outstanding practitioner. Through a process of joint preparation, observation and reflection, Associate Teachers will develop their subject knowledge and pedagogy across the age range with additional exposure to some Post-16 teaching. Training sessions are mainly hosted at The Arthur Terry School and allow the Associate Teachers to contextualise educational theories through learning walks and opportunities to observe practising teachers. Outstanding teachers, with expertise in aspects of education, will deliver active workshops that build on the experience in schools and add clarity to the journey ahead of them. The lead school, The Arthur Terry School, was designated one of the first 100 National s in July s are high-performing schools, which excel in developing teachers at all stages of their career, including Initial Teacher Training. What are we looking for? We are looking for highly motivated Associate Teachers who are committed to inspiring the young people in our schools. You must have excellent subject knowledge, but also the ability to deliver this in an engaging and creative way that inspires the learning of our children. Successful Associate Teachers on our programme are reflective and evaluate their performance in the classroom with a degree of depth. In addition, they exhibit high levels of emotional intelligence and are real team players.
My progress is personally tailored to me, with my own Learning Coach for guidance and support. Friday training sessions are highly valuable with professional experience sessions addressing teaching, learning and assessment applicable to all subjects. In addition, subject-specific workshops look at these aspects from your chosen subject s point of view. Sophie Lamburn (Associate Teacher, English) Training routes available School Direct is a new government initiative that places schools at the heart of the training of teachers. School Direct is a contemporary route into teaching that has an expectation of employment for outstanding candidates. We are currently offering two routes of Initial Teacher Training, which both lead to a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): School-Centred Initial Teacher Training, School Direct (SCITT) Our SCITT PGCE programme will allow successful Associate Teachers to achieve Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) at Secondary with enhancement at Post-16. In addition, this postgraduate pathway allows Associate Teachers to achieve credits towards a Masters-level qualification. Subjects offered through our SCITT pathway are Biology, Chemistry, Drama, English, Geography, Maths and Physics. Why choose this route? You will be able to experience at least FOUR different schools (including a Special School or Pupil Referral Unit, if you choose), which is usually more than a traditional, university-based PGCE course. You will work primarily in a Principal School where your timetable will build from general observations to teaching parts of Key Stage 3 lessons, and then full lessons across the whole age range. The idea of having several teaching experiences building up to teaching older students is two-fold. Firstly, it allows Associate Teachers to build their confidence and subject knowledge. Secondly, it ensures that Associate Teachers get to know their school in terms of policies and procedures so that they can take on new classes with confidence and the assurance that they are part of the teaching staff. Despite the school-centred nature of the course, there is still the academic rigour of a university-based PGCE course, with the opportunity to study at Masters level. You will work closely with a Learning Coach an outstanding practitioner in the school in which you are based, who will guide you in the planning, implementation and evaluation of lessons. This is distinctly different to the traditional, experienced mentor, and Associate Teachers are encouraged to work with their Learning Coach to find their own way to excel in the classroom. Course features There will be two weeks of preliminary training before you are introduced to your Principal School. During the remainder of the year, you will have four complete weeks of training at key intervals and one day each week at Arthur Terry for the majority of the course. Days spent at Arthur Terry consist of interactive PES workshops (Professional Experience Sessions) in mixed subject groups covering important pedagogic themes such as lesson planning, behaviour management, literacy and phonics, differentiation and more. Follow-up SPA sessions (Subject Pedagogy and Assessment) link to subject-specific elements of these themes and focus on further development of subject knowledge and assessment. Assignments include a study of the learning behaviour of individuals, the personal rationale for teaching your subject, subject pedagogy studies and analysis of assessment strategies. There is also a more detailed research project at the end of the course. Assignments require a range of background reading and some include oral presentations. Personal development of individual Associate Teachers is critically important. All Associate Teachers have regular tutorials with their Subject Route Leader to review their progress and use a subject action plan to continually develop their subject knowledge based on detailed auditing. The use of an online learning platform allows Associate Teachers access to all course documentation and resources. It also allows them to store evidence and carry out self-assessment and reflection, while the Learning Coaches and Subject Route Leaders can access their evidence to provide immediate support at all times.
Practical and exciting opportunities to work with a variety of schools, supported by a fantastic group of teaching staff! Primary Associate Teacher The training is provided by classroom practitioners who are currently teaching, so you are learning up-to-date teaching strategies first hand. What I really liked was the fact that you get a very personalised experience. Nick Blunt (Associate Teacher, Maths) School Direct in collaboration with a Higher Education Institution (HEI) The alternative School Direct route is a more school-led route where the training will be delivered by a combination of the associated Higher Education Institution (HEI) and our Teaching Alliance Schools. Training at the heart of a Alliance offers the exciting opportunity to train alongside outstanding practitioners, gaining valuable knowledge, skills and professional attributes that will enable you to start your personal journey towards becoming an excellent teacher and future leader. School Direct Primary Primary School PGCE in collaboration with Birmingham City University. A network of exceptional Primary Schools in North Birmingham is working to provide a personalised training experience. Associate Teachers experience workshops in all the schools involved, working closely with children to understand how they learn best. In addition, the Associate Teachers spend a fortnight in a Special School to develop effective strategies to differentiate their lessons. A week is spent at The Arthur Terry School to explore Key Stage 2-3 transition, and to enhance their subject knowledge across the curriculum. School Direct Secondary Secondary Art, Design & Technology, and Music, in collaboration with Birmingham City University. Secondary History, MFL, PE, and RE in collaboration with The University of Birmingham. How we select our Associate Teachers Applicants will have to demonstrate a prior commitment and a clear rationale as to why they want to enter this rewarding career. During the interview day, applicants will engage in group discussion, performing as part of a team, and then complete data analysis exercises that will allow them to demonstrate their ability to evaluate and synthesise information. Most importantly, applicants should demonstrate a passion for their subject and teaching children through delivering a task to a group of young people. Funding and fees All programmes are funded by tuition fees paid by the Associate Teacher. The cost of undertaking both programmes is 9,000. Once Associate Teachers have accepted a place, they can then make applications for tuition fee loans through Student Finance England, to cover the cost of their training. Bursaries and Scholarships are also available to eligible Associate Teachers. Full details can be found on the Department for Education website, How to apply: Applications for SCITT and School Direct can be made through UCAS Teacher Training, Applicants who pass the initial assessment will be invited to attend an interview, during which their suitability for teacher training will be assessed. Entry requirements for all routes We are looking for highly motivated, high achieving graduates straight out of university or looking for a career change, with a degree classification of a 2.2 or higher (with at least 50% subject content of the chosen subject route). In addition, a minimum of a C grade or the equivalent at GCSE English and Mathematics (a B grade in GCSE Mathematics for the Mathematics subject route) is required. The Primary route also requires a C grade or equivalent at GCSE Science. Literacy and Numeracy skills tests must also be completed successfully prior to the start of the course. See School experience is also preferable, prior to application. Produced by Words&Pictures. Tel
I loved my teacher training course for the four-year BEd (Hons) back in the late 1970s, but would I choose to do it that way again? Probably not. Today I would have the chance of following a bespoke degree and then choosing the vocational pathway. With our, we can ensure that your choice prevails and that you get the outcome you want. Now, that is personalised learning!
