1 ITED 350: Advanced Technological Communication COURSE SYLLABUS Fall 2010 CREDITS: 3 Semester Credit Hours INSTRUCTOR: Yun-Jo An, Ph.D. OFFICE: Room 229 PHONE: yunjo.an@tamut.edu OFFICE HOURS: TBD COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is intended to help students develop a knowledge base relating to the use of technology to increase productivity and enhance communication skills. On completion of this course, students will be able to use basic technology tools in order to communicate with and present information to various audiences. Teacher candidates will be able to meet some of the requirements of the technology competencies for Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities TExES by applying the use of appropriate technologies to meet the learning objectives for the PreK-12 classrooms. (Please see competency 9 of the PPR EC-12 TExES preparation manual: Students who are majoring in areas other than education will be able to apply the technology skills learned in this course to their fields of study. PREREQUISITES BCIS 1305 Business Computer Applications or equivalent

2 REQUIRED MATERIALS A book is not required for the course. However, the followings are required for course work: 1. Microsoft Office 2007 MS Word MS Excel MS PowerPoint MS Publisher 2. Inspiration: Inspiration is a visual learning and knowledge organizing tool to which you would be introduced in the course. Inspiration allows you to construct concept maps, timelines, Venn diagrams, etc. Inspiration is available in the computer lab on campus for those who can travel to campus. However, you may purchase a copy for about $70 from the company s web site at However, I suggest you download a 30-day trial version from This will be sufficient to meet the requirements of this course. 3. A USB Flash Drive for storing and transporting files 4. Internet access COURSE OBJECTIVES Discuss terms, concepts and issues relating to the use of technology in a variety of settings. Perform simple file management tasks, such as creating folders, moving and deleting files, and zipping folders. Produce materials for specific communication needs using a variety of application software. Conduct Internet research using a variety of search engines and resources. Create presentations using MS PowerPoint. Evaluate software and online resources for professional uses. Develop a website.

4 GRADING SCALE A = % B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = 59% and below STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Students are expected to: 1. Login to the course site regularly at least three times a week to check course updates and discussion board messages. 2. Actively participate in all course activities. 3. Turn in assignments on or before the due date. Late assignments will NOT receive full credit. Ten percent of the grade will be deducted for each day the assignment is late. received more than one week after their due date will not be accepted and will receive no credit. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Academic honesty is expected of students enrolled in this course. Cheating on examinations, unauthorized collaboration, falsification of research data, plagiarism, and undocumented use of materials from any source constitute academic dishonesty and may be grounds for a grade of F in the course and/or disciplinary actions. DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS Students with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations through the A&M-Texarkana Disability Services Office by calling SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Hardware - Both Macintosh and Windows systems are acceptable. Students do not need to purchase a new system to work on this course. However, the hardware minimum

5 requirement includes: - Pentium (2 GHz or greater) megabytes (MB) random access memory (RAM) - 20 GB or greater hard drive. - Operating Systems: Windows 98/NT/2000/ME/XP or OS 9.1 to OS X; G3, G4, or higher. Internet access: A DSL or Cable connection is preferable to a dial-up connection, where possible. Dial-up connection has less bandwidth and class materials may download slowly or not at all. High speed DSL or cable provides adequate connection for other class events such as chat and discussion board. Choose reliable Internet Service Provider, especially those that provide technical support. Internet browser and software: Internet Explorer (version 6.0 or greater) or Netscape (version 7.0 or greater). You may also download Firefox as alternative or additional browser. Sometimes some Internet tasks are easier to perform with Firefox than with Internet Explorer. Both browsers can run on your computer without any difficulty. Browsers that are part of the MSN and AOL software include proprietary modifications that may not work correctly with other resources. You may continue to use AOL or MSN as your Internet service provider, but once connected to the Internet; you should minimize the AOL or MSN window and launch Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Firefox. Applications Software: Access to MS Office 2003 or 2007 professional edition. Adobe Acrobat Reader: Available for download at this free program allows you to view and print many forms and some full-text documents from online library databases. Plug-ins: You may also download players or plug-ins such as Adobe Flash Player (available at and allows you to view any content delivered in Flash, Windows MediaPlayer (download latest version at Apple Quicktime ( RealPlayer ( allow you to play multimedia content online. Virus Protection: Viruses can be transmitted to computers as attachments. Once a virus is resident on a computer, it can hinder performance, crash the computer, or damage files and hard drives permanently. To protect your system, you should purchase up-to-date antivirus software and regularly check your computers for viruses. Texas A&M-Texarkana account: Upon application to Texas A&M University-Texarkana an individual will be assigned an A&M-Texarkana account. This account will be used to deliver official university correspondence. Each individual is responsible for information sent and received via the university account and is expected to check the official A&M-Texarkana account on a frequent and consistent basis. Faculty and students are required to utilize the university account when communicating about coursework.
