2 Before Presidency -born in Dennison, Texas -from a poor family -as an infant moved to Abilene -educated in local public schools and graduated from Abilene High School -interested in attending the Naval Academy but was too old so he joined the US Military Academy at West Point -Second Lieutenant, Deputy Chief of Staff, General Staff - Operations Division, Commander of US Forces in Europe (1942) -led the US invasion of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and then, finally, the US invasion of Normandy. -November 1945, he was named Army Chief of Staff until 1953 he served as the first Commander of NATO.

3 Chief Legislator: A -First president to serve when both houses were controlled by the opposite party -helped to strengthen established programs like Social Security -launched Interstate Highway System in continued the New Deal programs -He was willing to send federal troops into Little Rock, Arkansas to ensure that local schools were desegregated. (important step in the Civil Rights movement) -created the Eisenhower Doctrine where he asserted that America had the right to aid any country threatened by Communist aggression -National Defense Education Act, providing loans for college students and funds to encourage young people to enter teaching careers -signed act admitting Hawaii as the 50th state

4 Commander-in-Chief: D -Refused to aid France which hurt relations with France Saw the end to The Korean War -He tried to reduce the strains of the Cold War. In 1953, the signing of a truce brought an armed peace along the border of South Korea. -When occupation of Germany ended; he kept troops on contractual basis. -Ordered U.S. Marines into Lebanon at the request of President Camille Chamoun. -Ordered federal troops to Little Rock to enforce the desegregation of Central High School.

5 Head of State: A -D-day Speech (before presidency), was seen as a motivational speech, persuasive speech or inspirational speech, famous for its powers of verbal and oral communication. -president over a calm period of time in America -proposals put before Congress were mostly passed (it was a good percentage), well at least up until the end of his president -the country enjoyed a period of economic prosperity

6 Chief of Party: D -Republicans won Congress by only a few votes in 1952 and were ousted from control in bipartisanship was necessary to pass legislation but was controversial to supporters of each party -Eisenhower met without public announcement with the two southerners that led the congressional Democrats (Senator Lyndon Johnson and Congressman Sam Rayburn) -For about three-quarters of his administration Eisenhower faced a Democratic Congress -Economic problems damaged confidence in the Republican party but didn t really damage the president's own popularity

7 Guardian of the Economy: A -Balanced the budget -Social Security and unemployment insurance were extended and increased to 10 million -The economy experienced solid economic growth -Economic growth lowered inflation -Focused and lowered unemployment

8 Chief Diplomat: F -Eisenhower travelled to Korea before he took office to help conclude the peace talks. by July 1953, an Armistice was signed that separated Korea into two with a demilitarized zone at the 38th parallel. -proposed that the United States and Russia exchange blueprints of each other's military establishments and "provide within our countries facilities for aerial photography to the other country. After the deploring of Anglo-French-Israeli attack on Egypt, he promised that United States would not support this action. Denied the U2 plane crash in Russia
