1 (a) Explain the functionalities of the following internet system components and their typical roles within an internet system: JSPs Servlets Session beans Entity beans 40 marks 1
1 (b) Which of these components would you use to manage the flight search and booking process for an online travel agency system? 10 marks 2
2 (a) Explain in which situations a J2EE platform would be used for an internet system, and what advantages it has over an internet system using Servlets and JSPs without J2EE. 30 marks 3
2 (b) Draw the J2EE architecture diagram of an online flight booking system, which permits users to search for flights (using web service queries to airline web sites such as BA and Iberia), book and pay for a flight, using PayPal. 20 marks 4
3 (a) Explain the purpose of the Intercepting Filter pattern for J2EE. 10 marks 3 (b) Give the diagrams of its typical architecture and data model. 25 marks 3 (c) Give example code in Java for an Intercepting Filter with three filter classes Filter1, Filter2 and Filter3. 15 marks 5
1 (a) You should make the points that: JSPs are server-side components which enable the dynamic generation of web pages, using Java code embedded in HTML text. The Java code can access parameters of an HTTP request, interact with a database and perform other server-side operations. The results of processing can be displayed in the web page generated by the JSP. These components are usually used in the presentation tier of an internet system. JSPs are compiled into servlets by a JSP compiler. Servlets are a server-side technology which also can be used to generate dynamic web pages, in contrast to JSPs they are a pure Java component, and any HTML formatting has to be explicitly written to the result page as text. They are more appropriate for complex functionalities such as security checking of requests, delegation of requests, interaction with business tier, than are JSPs. They also occur mainly in the 6
presentation tier. Session beans are business tier components which provide session-level business functionality, such as shopping carts. They correspond to a conversation between the client and the system or a scenario of use of the system. They are not persistent beyond a single session. Session beans can be statefull (with persistent state) or stateless. Stateless session beans can implement functions which require only a single method call such as calculations using parameter data, logging, utility functions, sending confirmation emals, or other simple services. Statefull session beans provide functionality which may require several method calls. Session beans can encapsulate transactions and other combinations of entity bean functionalities. Stateless session beans can be shared between clients (presentation tier components). 7
Entity beans are business tier components which encapsulate the core semantics of the entities of the system. They provide business operations on instances of these entities, and also entity-level operations such as creation and search facilities. They provide a means to represent persistent data to the rest of the application as if that data was stored in a purely object-oriented manner, following the PIM class diagram. They hide the implementation of this diagram in the mechanisms of a relational (or other) database. Entity beans can be bean managed (BMP) or container managed (CMP). In BMP synchronisation of bean with database is carried out by explicit programming, in CMP the synchronisation is handled by the J2EE container/server. Entity beans typically check semantic invariants of entity data before permitting that data to be stored in the database, as well as other business semantics based functionalities. 8
1 (b) Session beans would be used to hold the session context data about a customer making a particular search and booking they would retain the selected flight between these steps, for example. They would also have the role of a shopping basket for the customer. JSPs could be used to present views of data to the customer, such as a list of possible flights meeting their search criteria, and details of their selected flight. Servlets could be used to handle customer commands, and coordinate the other components to fulfil these commands. Entity beans could represent persistent data such as flights, airlines, airports and bookings. 10 marks 9
2 (a) J2EE is appropriate for large-scale internet systems requiring functionalities such as transaction management, distributed processing, messaging, data management and security. J2EE provides a systematic architecture and framework for implementing internet systems, as parts of (or interfaces to) a larger distributed enterprise system. In J2EE business entities and functions are encapsulated in entity beans, which provide an interface to persistent business data which is independent of data storage technologies (PSM level models). Session level functionalities such as transactions involving several entities are handled by session beans. In contrast, a JSP/Servlet based approach interacts directly with the database servlets can contain database access code themselves or delegate this to a DBI component. Likewise, session level functionality is handled directly in servlets, which may therefore combine many different kinds and levels of functionality 10
in a single component, imparing flexibility and reusability. The J2EE platform provides a large set of pervasive services or built-in functionalities which are available to all applications based on the platform, more extensive than those available for Servlet /JSP systems based on the J2SDK. 30 marks 11

3 (a) Intercepting filter provides a flexible and configurable way of adding filtering, and pre and post processing of requests, to the presentation tier. These could include security checks on the host address of the client making the request, identification of which browser they are using, etc. 10 marks 13
