1 COPAT Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test Requirements You should already be physically active. Please do not participate in the COPAT unless your body is used to regular physical exercise. You should be exercising at least 2-3 times per week, at an intensity level that stresses your cardiovascular system. Your workouts should take your heart rate to its maximum (220 minus your age = max. heart rate). This physical abilities test is designed to achieve maximum heart rate and maintain it for one to two minutes. You will be required to have your blood pressure taken prior to testing, to help ensure the test will not pose an obvious health risk to you. DO NOT SMOKE, CONSUME CAFFEINE, SUGAR (e.g. energy drinks) OR ANY OTHER STIMULANT FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TEST. These will affect your blood pressure and heart rate and may preclude you from participating. Wear good quality running shoes or court shoes with good treads on the soles; this will help prevent you from slipping on the floor during the push-pull activity. Wear athletic clothing that you can test in as there may or may not be changing rooms available. You must bring the Medical Consent form, fully filled out and signed by your Physician. Also bring the Consent and Test Record form (with your printed name, signed and dated) to the test. Good luck on your COPAT test!

2 CORRECTIONS OFFICER S PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST (COPAT) Introduction Physical List A current evaluation of physical fitness requirements for performing the duties of a Correctional Peace Officer has identified a number of important (mandatory) physical fitness abilities. The study produced information substantiating the need to establish physical ability test Items that are fitness related and have validity toward job performance, which can be both easily, administered and provide specific reliable results. The subsequent design of this test is that of completing a number of test activities in a circuit (one activity following the other) on a pass/fail basis within a specifically identified time period. The test must be completed successfully, in sequence and within the specified time limit of 3:20 minutes; otherwise the applicant fails the test. The test circuit is made up of the following activities: a) run from start to stairs. b) Run up/down six flights of stairs. c) Run and negotiate obstacles down/through a corridor, hallway, cafeteria, etc. d) Pull open a door or move obstacle/person. e) Push open a door or move obstacle/person. f) Gain control over resisting subject by demonstrating endurance and agility. g) remove the subject (object) by carrying an 80 lb. weight out of the corridor, cafeteria, etc. Each of the test activities must be completed successfully prior to moving onto the next item in the circuit. Failure to complete any of the test items will disqualify the applicant. All test items with the exception of the weight carry, must be completed within the strictly enforced time limit. STATION 1 Start and run 50' (two turns) Correctional Peace Officers are required to move quickly from one station (place) to another during the routine performance of their duties. (e.g., responding to a call for assistance). 1. The applicant is asked if he/she has any questions. Explanations are again offered! Then asked if ready. 2. The test facilitator will start the timer/stopwatch immediately after the applicant passes the starting cone. 3. Run the course outside the cones as quickly as possible to the stairs (Station #2). 1. Cutting cones or knocking cones over: the applicant must come back to the cone and either replace the cone upright (if it was knocked over) or go around the cone properly.

3 STATION 2 STATION 3 Stair Run Correctional Peace Officers are required to run up and/or down flights of stairs during the routine performance of their duties (e.g., responding to a call for assistance at a different level). Some institutions have six different levels. 1. Enter the stair run from the front. 2. Run up and downstairs stepping on each stair. Repeat six times. 3. When completing the down stairs run on the first trip, turn right outside the railing and return to the front of the stairs; second trip, turn left outside the railing, third right, fourth left; fifth right; sixth, run to next Station, #3. 1. Failure to touch each stair on the way up or down: return to the bottom or top of the stairs and repeat. 2. Failure to alternate turns (repeat one trip). 3. Falling while negotiating the stairs. Repeat the trip where fault occurred. Mobility, Agility and Speed Run Correctional Peace Officers are required to routinely negotiate (maneuvre around, over, etc.) obstacles during the performance of their duties. On occasion the obstacles must be negotiated as quickly as possible (e.g., moving through tables, chairs, etc.) 1. Run around each cone in a zigzag pattern. Jump over the 3 sets of 18 hurdles without knocking them off. Both feet must be off the ground during the jump to prevent stepping over the obstacle. 2. On reaching the last cone, run completely around the cone (360 degrees) Then proceed to Station #4. STATION 4 1. If a hurdle is knocked off the stand (or the stands are knocked over) then the applicant must replace the hurdle and repeat the jump station before moving on. 2. Cutting cones or knocking cones over: the applicant must come back to the cone and either replace the cone upright (if it was knocked over) or go around the cone properly. Pull Station Correctional Peace Officers are required to pull open doors, pull on persons in gaining control over them, etc. During the performance of these activities, officers are required to move, change directions and still maintain a level of control over themselves, objects and persons. 1. Pick up the rope, gripping the rope only with both hands. 2. Pull the weight (70lbs.) off the base by pulling with the arms. 3. The applicant begins to move immediately through the machine-controlled 180 degree arc and touch the line at the other end with the outside foot; the inside foot must pass the 45 degree marking tape. 4. Move through the arc six times touching the line on each side.

4 5. A balanced position must be maintained throughout the performance of this activity, the weight must stay up at all times. STATION 5 1. Both arms must be flexed at the elbows throughout the activity. Locking the knees while hanging on the rope with straight arms reflects a position of poor balance and is not allowed. 2. Crossing the legs/feet during the arc is not allowed as this demonstrates an unbalanced position. 3. Walking/running away from your opponent also reflects a position of poor balance and is not allowed. 4. Dropping the weight will result in starting the pull activity over. Push Station Correctional Peace Officers are required to push open doors, push on persons in gaining control over them, etc. During the performance of these activities, officers are required to move, change directions and still maintain a level of control over themselves, objects and persons. 1. After dropping the pull rope grasp the push handles of the machine. Push the weight off the base and immediately begin the activity of moving through a 180 degree arc as in the pull activity described previously. 2. The arms must be bent at the elbows through the performance of the activity. The only parts of the body allowed to touch the Power Training Machine (PTM) during the push is the hands. 3. Chest is not allowed to rest on the forearms or the PTM. 4. Move through the arc six times touching the line on each side. 5. A balanced position must be maintained throughout the performance of this activity, the weight must stay up at all times. 1. Both arms must be flexed at the elbows throughout the activity. 2. STATION 6 Modified Squat Thrust and Stand During the course of their duties, Correctional Peace Officers occasionally are required to perform strenuous work at a high intensity for short periods of time. This strenuous work places a high anaerobic demand on the body as well as requiring the officer to think and control his/her body in recovering from pushes, trips, etc. and potentially having to regain a standing position from lying on the floor on either the back or front. 1. From a standing position bend down and place the hands on the mat in front of the feet. From this squat position thrust the feet to the rear, bend the arms at the elbows and place the chest on the mat. Push the body up

5 and bring the legs and feet under the body then stand erect. Place one or both hands on the rail in front of the body. 2. With the hand(s) being the only part of the body allowed to touch the rail, vault to the other side of the rail and land in a standing and balanced position ready to continue the exercise. 3. From the standing position complete a reverse squat thrust and stand. Bend the knees and body and place the hands behind and to the side of the feet then sit down on the mat. Extend the legs horizontal as the shoulder blades (upper back) touch the mat. After the shoulder blades have touched the mat regain the seated position and roll onto the feet. Stand erect. Do not grasp the rail until the standing position is gained. 4. Grasp the rail in the preferred position and again perform the vault over the rail without touching the rail with any part of the body other then the hand(s). Land in the standing balanced position on the other side ready to continue the exercise. Continue these activities until 10 squat thrusts have alternately been completed (5 to the front, 5 to the back); the applicant will have completed 9 rail vaults. 5. On completing the tenth and last squat thrust and stand, the administrator will stop the timer as soon as the applicant stands in a balanced and controlled manner. 1. Should an error be made while performing Station #6, the specific activity where the error occurred must be repeated until performed correctly. 2. Allowing the body to role sideways to get up is not allowed. THE TIMED PORTION OF THE COPAT TEST IS COMPLETED. MINIMUM STANDARD TO COMPLETE IS 3:20 MINUTES. STATION 7 Weight Carry and Finish Correctional Peace Officers are required to lift and carry heavy objects and/or persons. Most often two or more officers may carry a person or other heavy object under controlled conditions. The applicant must start to perform the weight carry within 30 seconds of the completion of Station #6. 1. Pick the 80 Ib. torso bag in a safe manner by grabbing the skirting of the bag using only the hands. Once the bag is off the floor it must be carried at waist height in front of the body. Carry the bag around the marker placed 25 feet from the starting point. Return to the weightcarry start marker and carefully place the torso bag on the floor under control (i.e. don t drop or throw in onto the floor). 2. The torso bag must be carried in front of the body with both hands; this demonstrates hand grip, arm, back, and leg muscular strength and endurance. The torso bag must not be carried on the hip or shoulder, or scooped under the arms. 1. If the applicant is unable to lift and carry the 80 pound torso bag in a continuous motion around the marker and back (i.e. 50 feet), the applicant

6 fails the entire COPAT test. Dropping the bag at any time disqualifies the applicant.
