2 Our outcomes for this curriculum evening To become more familiar with the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum To know the importance of play in your child s development To have a better understanding of a Nursery session To make new links with other new nursery parents, helping you to create a supportive network which will continue to grow in the future
3 What is the Early Years Foundation Stage? The Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) is the stage of education for children from birth to the end of the Reception year. It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning.
4 Within the theme of Learning and Development there are seven areas. All areas are connected to one another and are equally important. 1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development 2. Communication and Language 3. Physical Development 4. Literacy 5. Mathematics 6. Understanding the World 7. Expressive Arts and Design
5 Personal, Social and Emotional Development The children will be learning to: become self-confident take an interest in things know what their own needs are dress and undress independently become independent tell the difference between right and wrong
6 Teach your child to say: I need help instead of I can t. Always appreciate the fact that every child is different, unique and special. Avoid labelling your child. Please avoid saying You are silly messy naughty Label the behaviour It was a wrong choice to make Remember our interaction is copied by our children.
7 Communication and Language Literacy The children will be learning to: talk confidently and clearly enjoy listening to stories, songs and poems hear and say sounds, and begin to link them to the alphabet rhyme and understand alliteration learn to use a pencil effectively
8 Give your child the best gift you can give: your time and attention. Read to child every day. Teach them songs and sing Nursery Rhymes. Take them to Libraries. Please avoid writing in CAPITALS. Use letter sounds.
9 Physical Development The children will be learning to: move confidently control their body handle equipment
10 Did you know that movement helps children to learn? For their brains and bodies to work well, children need water, air and light.
11 Mathematics The children will be learning to: develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play become comfortable with numbers and with ideas such as 'heavier than' or 'bigger be aware of shapes and space and enjoy making patterns
12 Ask your child to count regularly and tell you the total. How many are there? Enjoy finding and talking about shapes in the local environment.
13 Understanding the World The children will: explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for find out about past events in their lives and their families' lives find out about different cultures and beliefs
14 Talk about where you live the address, town, country. Plan journeys together. Enjoy wellie walks together this Autumn. Bring in items of interest.
15 Expressive Arts and Design The children will explore colours and shapes making things role play making music
