AP STUDIO ART: SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS: Jolie Spelman Bishop Moore Catholic High School AP Studio Art Revised for Summer Work 2016 Summer Contact info;

2D Art, & Drawing Objective: You are expected to create 6 high quality, well- thought out pieces of completed artwork throughout the summer and keep a sketchbook to document the progress and concepts behind your artwork. The following pages have a vast selection of summer assignments for you to choose from. As an AP studio artist, you are expected to submit 6 quality artworks that can be comparable to artwork produced during the course of the year. Your summer assignment involves a time commitment of about 4-5 hours a week. They are vital to the development of your AP Portfolio. It will add to the required AP sections: Quality, Concentration, & Breadth. In some cases, it will be a realization process for you to understand yourself better as an artist. I recommend getting on to Pinterest account. I have a folder titled: Art Projects for Students Please follow this folder. I will pin ideas for you to do. (search Jolie Joseph Spelman )

SUMMER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS: You are to complete at least SIX of the following assignments over the summer for drawing, or 2D Drawing Portfolio includes work done in Pencil, charcoal, marker, ink, color pencil and any paint on flat surfaces 2D Portfolio- includes all of above AND: photography, collage, and low relief Materials: You will be responsible for providing your own materials. I recommend Sam Flax Art supply and Art Systems. Both will give you a generous student discount. Additionally you may order materials online from Blick Art Supply or Nasco Art Supply. REQUIRED MATERIALS: You need to purchase a medium size tackle box from Walmart (Art stores sell similar boxes but they are overpriced) You will also need the following materials thru the summer. I will provide many materials during the school year but it is very important you use good quality materials during the summer- get the materials AS YOU NEED THEM. o 6 good quality brushes for watercolor o 6 good quality brushes for oil and acrylic o Set of acrylic paints (8-12 colors) 4oz tubes o Pint of Gesso o 4-8 oz Gel medium o Charcoal pencil set (extra soft, soft, and white) if you are going to use) o Kneaded eraser o Magic Rub or White eraser o Drawing Pencil minimum set includes 2b, 6b and ebony pencil o Masking tape or artist tape o Set of 24 color pencils (Prisma-color brand is nice and relatively affordable) o Set of 12 Prisma-color markers (if possible) o Bristol board 10 pages no larger than 18 x 24 o Canvas board no larger than 18 x 24 o Waterproof Black ink pens set of.01,.03,.05 o Watercolor set of Surfaces: Each of the pieces needs to be on an 11 x 14 to 18x 24 surface nothing larger, nothing smaller.: Paper (nothing lighter than 80lb), cardboard, canvas board, plywood, mat board, etc., stretched canvas I can provide some paper and matt board to work on.

Mediums: ink, color pencil, acrylic or oil paint, water color (traditional or pencil) markers, charcoal, graphite pencil, transfers. DRAWING PORTFOLIO- drawing portfolios primary concentrate on MARK MAKING on flat surfaces. use these ideas as starting points but others can be done 1. Divide a page, canvas, board the working surface in to three equal spaces. Do three views on one landscape. Limit yourself to a specific color scheme. 2. Do a drawing of a futuristic cityscape.i.e., Dallas in the year 2050 (keep in mind rules of one, two, and three-point perspective). 3. Do a portrait, self-portrait, still-life, or landscape using either a complimentary, analogous, or split-complimentary color scheme (you may use black and white as well as shades and tints of the chosen hues). 4. Do a close up of a subject work from a photo create the entire piece in monochromatic black white and grey and take one part (4x6) and do a color detail of the piece. open medium 5. Do some exploration with mixed media. Do a piece (portrait, self-portrait, landscape or still-life) in which you use at least three different medium i.e., a wet medium, a dry medium and some collage element. 6. Do graphite drawing of a still-life arrangement that consists of reflective objects your home. Your goal is to convey a convincing representation with a full range of values. To add interest to the composition, you might also want to render yourself being reflected in the objects. 7. Create a still life arrangement of objects and create a close up of the composition either from above or below. Photos may be used to assist in the drawing of the composition. 8. Create a drawing of an unusual interior for instance, looking inside a closet, cabinet, refrigerator, inside your car use your imagination! 9. Do a drawing of your hands in a variety of poses. You must carefully plan your composition in order for the separate units to work together visually. 10. Do a color-rendering of a still life arrangement consisting of your family member s Shoes try to convey some sense of each of your individual family member s distinct personalities in your piece.- try this as a mixed media piece! 11. Do a drawing of your worldly treasures arranged in an interesting still-life composition. 12. Create a self-portrait that mimics a famous person. Evaluate all work that is intended for the final portfolio and carefully consider the inclusion of any pieces completed prior to the course or completed outside the instruction offered in this course. 2D PORTFOLIO all assignments are open medium. 2-D may incorporate digital media, mixed media, collage and photograph where Drawing Portfolio cannot. Use these projects as starting points but others can be done. 1. Metamorphosis open medium A series of works that begin with representational interpretations and evolve into abstraction. 2. An exploration of patterns and designs found in nature and/or culture. 3. A series of landscapes based upon personal experience of a particular place in which composition and light are used to intensify artistic expression.

4. Development of a series of identity products (logo, letterhead, signage, etc.) for imaginary businesses. 5. A series of political cartoons using current events and images. 6. Abstractions developed from cells and other microscopic images. 7. Interpretive portraiture or figure studies that emphasize dramatic composition or abstraction. 8. A personal or family history communicated through symbols or imagery. 9. A series of fabric designs, apparel designs, or weavings used to express particular themes. 10. A composition/image created solely from text or fonts Value established thru size of text and addition or reduction of white space between letter forms. It is also recommended that you work in a personal sketchbook/visual journal/ altered book. Throughout the year if you do not do this work, you will not pass the first 9 week period. I also want you to take time over the summer to think about ideas that you may want to pursue as a concentration. On line Resources: 1. Check out the AP College Board web site for examples of past portfolios 2. Pinterest is a great place to get ideas for AP assignments/projects 3. Google Images search AP Student art projects 4.
