1 Advanced Placement Studio Art (Drawing) Yukon High School Mr. Brian Payne ext Educational Objectives My goal for you while you are in AP Studio Art this year is to produce the best collection of work in your high school career. The AP Studio course is designed to prepare students for collegiate coursework at the post-secondary level by developing the mastery of concept, composition, and the thorough execution of 2-D design at a level of high quality. Using your sketchbook drawings as a template for the AP portfolio pieces you submit is very important to developing and following through with the creative processes. The AP Studio Art (Drawing) course teaches students a variety of concepts and approaches in drawing and painting so that the student is able to demonstrate a range of abilities and versatility with technique as well as with problem-solving. Such conceptual variety can be demonstrated through either the use of one or the use of several media, and places emphasis on the use of mark marking through drawn or painted works. Additionally, the course teaches students a variety in concepts and approaches so that the student is able to demonstrate a range of abilities and versatility with ideation (i.e. breadth ). Students will also work with a specific theme, thus establishing the foundation of their Concentration for their portfolio submission. You are required to complete the following to submit your artwork to the AP Portfolio Review in May: Section I - Breadth (12 artworks/pieces) Your Breadth should demonstrate an understanding of the principles of design, including unity, variety, balance, emphasis (center of interest), contrast, rhythm & movement, and repetition. Proportion, scale and figure/ground relationship should also be reflected. These pieces are more of a collection of solved problems rather than a cohesive group like the Concentration pieces. Digital images of these 12 works will be digitally submitted to the AP Portfolio review in May. Section II - Concentration (12 artworks/pieces) Concentration pieces show the dedication to investigating a specific idea, theme, or concept in art. These pieces are not random artworks, but demonstrate a specific style that is unique. Students will create and develop a cohesive concentration, exploring a single visual concern in depth. Each student will also provide and present an outline of their specific coherent plan of action or investigation, growth, and discovery involved with their compelling visual concept to the class. Students are encouraged to explore a personal, central interest as intensively as possible; you are free to work with any idea in any medium that addresses two-dimensional design issues. These 12 pieces should reflect your own ideas as an individual, which reflect your ability to explore and create as an artist. Digital images of these 12 works will be digitally submitted to the AP Portfolio review in May. Section III - Quality (5 artworks/pieces) These works of art are meant to demonstrate your knowledge of the principles of design as well as your mastery of design. The five (5) Quality works can come from your Breadth or Concentration pieces, or you may create new artworks. These five (5) pieces will be mailed to the AP exam board in May of page 1

2 Grading Below is a breakdown of the types of assignments we will work on and the weight of the assignment as it relates to your overall grade: Projects 50 to 200 points (50% of the Semester grade) Class Critiques: 10 to 20 (15% of the Semester grade) Semester Exam: 100 to 120 points (20% of the Semester grade) *Weekly Progress Grade: 50 points (15% of the Semester grade) * The Weekly Progress Grade is based on your classroom management (cleanup) and work ethic in class. I expect you to work continuously in class. Goofing off, talking (and not working), cell phone use, and sleeping will greatly reduce your overall grade. Projects Projects makeup the majority of your overall grade. These projects are based on the subject we are studying at the current time. Unlike your previous Studio Art courses, you have the opportunity to increase a project grade to improve the artwork. Projects are graded based on 2 criteria: Effort (50% of your grade) How much effort did I put into my artwork? Did I rush through it? Did I take the time to use the art techniques I was taught? Effect (50% of your grade) How effective is my artwork? (use of color, design, etc.) Does it look finished? Does it look professional? Class Critiques We will conduct group and individual critiques that will allow each student to receive feedback on their artwork. These critiques are led by or held one-on-one with the instructor. A grade will be given for student participation and engaging oneself in the critique process. In these critiques, we will use the vocabulary of art, elements of art and principles of design as discussed by the instructor and used by the students on a regular basis to practice verbal communication about the students own artworks as well as artworks of their peers. Supplies/Expenses Unfortunately, art can be a bit expensive. In order to prepare you for the potential expense of this class, here are the fees associated with the AP Studio Portfolio: Sketchbook = $7 - $15 (if you already own a sketchbook there is no need to purchase a new one) AP Studio Portfolio Project Fee (art supplies & materials) = $50 The College Board AP Portfolio (fee to submit your work to the AP Portfolio Review) = $89* * If you have significant financial need, you may be eligible for a College Board fee reduction. Please talk to Mr. Payne or your counselor about AP Exam Fee reductions. Total Estimated Expense: $ (cost could be higher if you purchase additional supplies not provided by the AP Project Fee). page 2

3 Academic Integrity All work completed in this course must be original, completed by the student, and done without the aid of photographs or other copyrighted work. We will explore artistic integrity, plagiarism and moving beyond the act of simply duplicating art in this course. If you submit work that makes use of photographs, published images, and/or other artists works, you must show substantial and significant development beyond duplication to ensure personal artistic ownership in the work. Plagiarism, using an image (even in another medium) that was made by someone else, is unethical and it will not be allowed in this course. Class Expectations & Rules 1. Please arrive to class on time. If the door is shut, you are late and must to go to the office for a tardy slip. 2. Absolutely no cell phone or hand-held video game use. This includes texting, talking, or video games. Mp3 player use is allowed only when the instructor is not talking. 3. You must use a hallpass in order to leave the room (restroom, library, etc.). You will receive 9 hall passes per semester. 4. You share your desk with four other students, so please treat your desk as you would if you had your own office. Refrain from writing, carving, or drawing on the desk. You will be responsible for cleaning or repairing your desk if you alter it in anyway. 5. You are expected to work continuously during the class period. When there is 5 minutes left in class, you will be instructed on when you should start cleaning up. Do not clean up before this point. Please do not line up at the door. 6. I expect everyone to be able to work in an environment that is void of any slurs or derogatory comments that demean another student, person, or group of people. This includes comments pertaining to one s style of dress, race, gender, or sexual orientation. There is absolutely no tolerance on this issue. Your Instructor I am originally from Stillwater, Oklahoma and graduated from Stillwater High School. I attended Loyola University in Chicago, where I received my Bachelors in Fine Arts with a concentration in Photography. I worked for a small advertising firm as their photographer and production artist for one year, then worked as a freelance Graphic Designer and Photographer after leaving the firm. After six years in Chicago, I moved back to Stillwater to attend graduate school, and earned my Masters in Education in 2008 from Oklahoma State University. Prior to Yukon High School, I was a Graduate Teacher at OSU for two years then completed my teaching internship at Lakenheath Elementary and Lakenheath High School on Lakenheath Air Force Base in England. I taught one year at Mustang Elementary School, and this is my seventh year at Yukon High School. I have visited over 60 culturally significant museums and architectural sites that pertain to our study of the visual arts, which allows me to provide you with a first-hand account of what you are studying, as well as hopefully inspire you to travel the world. When I am not working, I am usually working on my own artwork and have paintings on display in several in private collections across the United States. Additionally, I have an essay published in A Journey to Unlearn and Learn in Multicultural Education (Wang & Olson, 2009), acted as the photography consultant for Photography (Culture in Action) (Miles, 2009), and had a journal article published in the fall 2010 National Art Education Association s Social Justice issue. page 3

This fee pays for supplies such as clay, various types of paper, canvas, and acrylic, oil, tempera, and watercolor paint.
