2 About IIT Roorkee The Indian Institute of Technology is the successor of the University of Roorkee and is the oldest technical institution of the country established as the Roorkee College in 1847 and rechristened as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in It was elevated to the first Technical University of Independent India on November 25, In the year 2001, it was declared as the Institute of national importance and converted into the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. About Water Resources Development & Management Department Department of Water Resources Development and Management of IITR is a premier place for learning of international standing in post-graduate education, training and research in the discipline of water resources development and management. Since its creation in 1955 under the stewardship of ECAFE (now ESCAP) of the United Nations, the department has creditably undertaken numerous national and international sponsored research and consultancy projects on hydraulic & hydrological modelling, remote sensing & GIS based studies for river basin geomorphology & flood-plain changes, stream bank protection & erosion control, flood estimation & management, hydro power development, hydroelectric systems, irrigation water management, river engineering including inland navigation, planning & design of hydraulic structures for water resources management, besides regular post-graduation programmes. About National Mission of Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET) Power Electronics plays a very important role in any country's industrial economy. Identifying it's positive effects on many factors like increase in productivity and quality, improvement in energy efficiency and quality of power systems, environment friendly power generation and mass transportation systems, Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY) has launched the programme National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET) with the vision of making India a dominant player in Power Electronics at the international level. C-DAC Trivandrum is the Nodal Centre for this programme. NaMPET facilitates Research, Development, Deployment and Commercialization of Power Electronics Technology, by ensuring participation of academics, R&D and industry. Futuristic technology development projects and user specified sponsored projects are taken up under this programme. Premier academic institutes, user/manufacturing industries of power electronics systems in the country are networked to realize the Mission. (For more details ) About Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) The C-DAC undertakes Application-oriented Research, Design and Development in Electronics so as to generate state-of-the-art, producible, marketable and field maintainable products and systems. The Power Electronics Group has wide experience of developing successful power electronic products/ systems and a very good industry interaction by way of transfer of technologies, field implementations etc. It has very close association with reputed Academic Institutions like IISc and IITs. The C-DAC has contributed significantly to the growth of the industry in general and the electronics sector in particular through the indigenous development of commercially viable systems and products, foreign technology absorption, adaptation and upgradation, consultancy and training and turnkey implementation of contract projects. The Centre has several firsts to its credits and is the recipient of prestigious national level awards for excellence in application- oriented R & D.

3 About the Course Hydropower plant converts the energy of water in the streams and rivers into electricity. The volume of water flow and the utilized head determine the quantity of electricity generated. The greater the flow and head, more the electricity produced. Hydropower on a small scale or micro-hydro is one of the most cost-effective energy technologies to be considered for rural electrification in less developed countries. Usually hydro-turbines are optimized for an operating point defined by speed, head and discharge. At fixed speed operation, limited deviations from head and discharge are allowed. But to improve the efficiency of operation of hydro turbines with part loads and with varying heads, variable speed operation of hydro turbine and generator offers an attractive solution. However, with variable speed operation, it is required to adapt the generator output voltage and frequency to match with the grid standards. In this regard the power electronic technology plays a vital role to match the characteristics of these generations units and the requirements of grid connections, including frequency, voltage, control of active and reactive power, harmonic minimization, etc. Specific Objectives 1. Explore the power electronics technologies to use as an efficient interface in mini/micro hydropower. 2. Explore power quality solutions to this application. 3. Emphasize a range of both control and computing solutions to the generating plants based on their economics and reliability. 4. Discuss the design issues (civil, mechanical, electrical aspects) of mini/micro hydro power plants. 5. Explore the spectrum of excitation and reactive power control of electrical generators.
