1 Yr.8 Newsletter Article 65 Lower school Magistrates trial competition Dedicated Year 8 and 9 students joined an exciting competition that took place in Basildon Crown Court on Saturday 1 st of March There were plenty of roles to be taken on in the court such as; Magistrates who had to discuss if the defendant was guilty or not, Lawyers for the defence and prosecution who had to ask tricky questions to prove their point, a Legal Advisor who had to read two speeches within a time limit, and the Usher who had to move from one place to another to bring up witnesses. Then of course there were the witnesses and the defendant who had to memorise their statements back to front and answer questions in character. The competition went really well; team Shenfield did a great job. Sadly we didn t get to the finals however this won t stop us from trying even harder next year! It was definitely a great experience and a great way for the two year groups to bond. It helped students build up their confidence and responsibility which will be useful in not our future. We d like to thank all the teachers who helped us especially Miss McCormick and our supporting magistrate Mrs Bunting. 2 Royal Air force Engineers teach students their jobs through comedy and physics. Year 8 students were given the opportunity to watch an entertaining and educational presentation by the BAE systems team on Friday February It was so much fun to join in and learn about the science of physics that enable the planes in our Royal Air Force to have such impact. Students were given the chance to take part in a number of experiments that really brought science to life. Great assembly, it was really fun! I loved every single one of the experiments. I didn t realise that the royal air force did so many jobs, especially helping out with the Olympics. Lauren. The Royal Air Force assemble was amazing, a lot of shocking things happened E.g. When my friend Sharon went up and played the piano and lights came out of the telsa coil when she played. I also got chosen to come up and hold up a beach ball that floated on my hands! 3 BAE systems education programme Competition! Our challenge invites you to make your own two minute film to demonstrate Physics in our everyday world. You can submit an individual entry or a team entry a team can consist of up to 6 people. You can also submit your entry in other forms by way of PowerPoint, or by illustration. Your idea must be an original idea, not copied from something you may have seen or heard about. Once you are happy with your film, all you have to do is upload it onto the BAE Systems Education website you can even get your friends to like your film. The films will be judged by our esteemed panel from BAE Systems. For more information check the website: Shenfield high school s lower school play Peter Pan auditions! Lower school Drama Club has now started every Tuesday lunch. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to be a part of. From April the students who attend drama club will begin to work on 2014 s lower school play, Disney s Peter Pan. Auditions will be held for larger roles in the play however every student who attends Drama Club will be given the opportunity to take part in the play. The experience of being part of a school production helps students gain a wider range of skills. Auditions will be held on Thursday 3 rd of April 2014 from 3pm-4pm in X2. If you wish to audition please collect an audition script during Drama Club on the 1 st of April Easter Concert! The Easter Concert will be on the Thursday 4 th of April 2014 at 7:00pm in the main hall. Tickets are available on the day or from X19, 5 for adults and 2.50 for concessions/students. Please come and support your friends and family who have been preparing for this performance for so many weeks.

4 The delicious celebration breakfast! Well done to those who got an invite to the celebration breakfast. The celebration breakfast was an opportunity to reward some fantastic students. Everyone who attended was personally chosen by their Assistant Progress Leader. Year 8 have a theme of Be the Best you can Be, all the students who were invited are truly living up to that theme. It was so much fun! And it was nice to see students from all different years. - Heather Bowles. Silent Readers: World book day! (Shenfield High School s Twitter post 5th of March) Year 8 are making the most of quality reading time in we're using Lego to engage our Library Learners! Design a Poster competition Not Seen, Not Heard, Not taken away! The poster must be A4 size and must reach student services by the 21 st of March. The poster can be hand drawn, painted or computer generated. The winning design will be copied and displayed around the school. There will be a prize for each year group and a suitable prize for the overall winner.

5 Committed and independent students needed! Yr. 8 Press team Hello fellow students, Are you a committed and independent student? Would you take time to write a newsletter? Well if the answer is yes, then join the Year 8 press team! The current members represent our school by writing an article every two weeks which is published on the school s website through the newsletter. We are looking for students who are confident to ask and interview other students. We also require students who would like to write articles about sporting competitions and fixtures. Everyone is welcome to join as long as you are committed and willing to give up your spare time. This is a great opportunity to be involved in school life. Sport Achievements and news Fantastic win for the year 8 girls tonight at Chelmer Valley Miss Leborgne's player of the match goes to Rachel Dunn. Via 4 th of March 2014 U13 Girls turn in the Essex final next Wednesday! -Via 8 th of March 2014

6 Our U13 boys enjoyed 2 excellent wins in the group stage win of the Essex Indoor cricket cup. -Via 8 th of March 2014 Despite their cup run - u13 girls are still one of the best 8 teams in the country! Via 28 th of February 2014 Our Year now having Interhouse games in our PE classes! Outstanding English Projects Rewarded with a Party! On 11 th of March 2014 Miss Kelly rewarded her students for their outstanding Projects. Miss Kelly and Mr Barron awarded students one by one with chocolates and certificates. Mrs Herman came in to congratulate Alex McNulty for his extraordinary animation of William Shakespeare s The Tempest built out of Lego. Everyone watched the premier of Alex s video. The whole class really enjoyed his outstanding work which is a great example of being the being the best you can be. He was very inspiring. Miss Kelly told the class that she was very proud of each and every one of us, especially Alex. She also stated that she had copied his video to all of the teachers and staff at SHS. Even Mr Barron was very proud of Alex when he watched the video, he was in awe. Alex McNulty s video:
