4 Microbial Identification Identification and characterization of microorganisms is a key step in clinical microbiology, hospitals hygiene and microbiological research. Bruker has pioneered the application of MALDI Mass Spectrometry to the challenge of microbial identification. Using the characteristic patterns of highly abundant proteins of the respective microorganisms, and the ability of Bruker systems to analyze those patterns, Bruker has created the ground breaking MALDI Biotyper for microbial identification. MALDI Biotyper The MALDI Biotyper combines the well proven, and easy to use, benchtop microflex TM MALDI Mass Spectrometer with a comprehensive database and data analysis software to provide a turn key solution for identification of a variety of microorganisms. Capable of identification down to the genus, species, and even strain level, the MALDI Biotyper produces results comparable to molecular methods but at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional biochemical methods.
