Crump St., Fort Worth Every fourth Saturday of the month, with the exception of December, United Community Centers hosts the Wesley Mobile Pantry at the Wesley Center located at 3600 N. Crump. Volunteers are needed to help with client assistance and distribution. Presbyterian Night Shelter (PNS) 2400 Cypress St. Fort Worth Clean or paint the main shelter (agency provides materials) Organize pantries Sort incoming food and/or prep for lunch and serve meals The Salvation Army 7am to 8am; 11am to 1pm; or 4pm to 6pm Volunteers arrive 30 minutes prior to shift E. 4 Company In-House Opportunities: (can be done anytime, year round) Host a House-In-A-Box drive for clients in the Catholic Charities program. A variety of household items are needed for transitional housing clients. A list of recommended items is provided by the agency. Create bookmarks for the children in the Center for Transforming Lives (formerly YWCA) programs. Host a shelf-stable food drive for CEC, GRACE or the Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB) and deliver items for an opportunity to see the agency. Host a signing party and set up a station to create cards for ladies in the Girls Inc. program. Cards and letters of encouragement can help motivate and keep them inspired. Host a signing party and set up a station to create cards for clients in the Meals On Wheels program. Cards are also needed for our veteran groups in the Meals On Wheels and VA North Texas Health Care System (Dallas location) programs. A PDF of the veteran card is available from United Way of Tarrant County. Host a comfort-kit drive for Presbyterian Night Shelter (PNS) and deliver items for an opportunity to see the agency. Needs include travel sized: toothpaste/toothbrush, shampoo, deodorant, disposable razor and antibacterial wipes (single packet size). The agency is also in need of new socks, t-shirts, and underwear. Host a book drive for the Reading Oasis Reading Center program. Centers are located throughout Tarrant County in 17 elementary schools. The program is in great need of Spanish books for all elementary reading grade levels. Books can be delivered to United Way or we can schedule to pick-up. Host a drive for clients at various Senior Center Services locations. Senior centers across the county are in need of small prize items for their Bingo games. Delivery can be made to a local center in your area, United Way or we can schedule to pick-up and distribute. Host a comfort-kit drive benefitting VA North Texas Health Care System (Dallas location) and deliver items. The VA receives an average of 10 homeless veterans per day. Needs include new socks, t-shirts, underwear and hygiene items (soap, shampoo, toothbrush/toothpaste, etc.). 5 Longer-term Volunteer Needs United Way of Tarrant County: Committee volunteers: United Way has over 200 volunteers that serve on our Board, councils and steering committees. We are currently in volunteer rotation and need to fill several positions. Meetings are scheduled for 1 ½ hours and depending on the committee, meet 5-10 times per year. Should you have anyone interested in serving on a council or steering committee, we can provide additional information. Ombudsman volunteers: Ombudsman are sometimes the only advocates for residents in nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities. Ombudsman volunteers are critical in working with facilities, residents and their families to ensure residents have proper quality of care. There are over 200 facilities in Tarrant County and the Ombudsman program is in critical need of volunteers. State certified training is provided at no cost and the Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman coordinator works with volunteers every step of the way. Trainings begin in September and we can provide additional information on this great program. VITA volunteers: Community volunteers are trained as IRS certified tax preparers and meet with clients one-on-one to prepare and file their tax returns.
