Installing Redstor Online Backup Plus on Windows and Mac OS X To start the installation, download the installer using the link specified in your e mail from Redstor or from our knowledgebase site (kb.redstor.com). For Windows, run the.exe installer and installation will start automatically. For Mac OS X, secondary click the.pkg file and select to open the file. Once installed, the software should open your default web browser to :5000, and to a wizard which will guide you through the main features of Redstor Online Backup Plus and help you to provide the initial settings for it. Follow the step by step instructions of the Wizard to complete the process. 1. Language Settings Choose your language option from the dropdown menu 2. Personal Access Enter in the unique Device name and Password provisioned for this device that was provided to you by Redstor 5

3. Security Code Choose your encryption method from the dropdown list and choose a security code to encrypt your data. The security code can be any word or sentence (50 character limit). Using this code, you can encrypt your files with a strong encryption algorithm, therefore keeping your private data secured and protected from unauthorised access, including Redstor. Keep this security code safe as it cannot be recovered and without it, data cannot recovered if you need to re install the software, for example in a disaster recovery situation. If you are reconnecting to an existing provisioned device name, you will get the following message and the option to choose whether you wish to reconnect or create a restore only client: 6

4. Schedule Your Backup Choose a simple backup schedule to use for automating your backups. This can be changed at a more granular level once the installation has completed. 5. Report via Enter your address and the frequency that you wish to receive dashboard reports from the dropdown menu. Please separate multiple addresses with just a semi colon, no spaces. 7

In our latest releases of Redstor Online Backup Plus, there have been major changes made both to the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and to the processing code behind the application. The most obvious change is that the software no longer opens in its own application, but that it now opens in a web browser. In your toolbar, you will see :5000, showing that it is connecting locally on port 5000 (although this port may dynamically change if required). The solution supports all the latest versions of the main popular web browsers. Please check our knowledgebase site (kb.redstor.com) for more information. 12

Overview On the overview page, the status of your backups are displayed. The page is divided into "Backup overview" and "Backup history". Here you can see which backups are running, how many backups have run, when the last backup ran, and what the status of the backups are. Under " Backup history", click a day and you will see a summary of that day: When you click on the underlined numbers, you will get more information such as detailed error messages, the full paths to processed or problem files, the size of those files, and the duration it took to process them. 13

Choosing your Backup Selection and Using Application Plugins In this section, we will talk about selecting data for backup with each of the plugins included in the Redstor Online Backup Plus solution and how to restore it again. It is important that you choose your selection carefully and ensure that you have ticked all the data that you wish to be protected. Our solution works by performing one full backup and then just incremental backups for life. We will always recommend backing up your data with one of our supported plugins when possible. This is to ensure an application consistent backup is run. For example, Redstor will not support an SQL or SIMS backup using the Files and Folders plugin, or an exchange backup via the Network Shares plugin. Redstor Online Backup Plus will automatically detect some of the applications on your system, such as SQL, Exchange, and Hyper V. If there is a plugin which you require which is not showing up in your backup client, please contact Redstor Support for assistance. Our supported plugins are below (full version support can be found on page 3): 1. Files and Folders 2. System State 3. Network Shares 4. Microsoft Exchange (using VSS) 5. Microsoft SQL (using VSS) 6. Microsoft SharePoint (using VSS) 7. Oracle Databases (using RMAN) 8. VMware Virtual Machines 9. Microsoft Hyper V Virtual Machines 10. MySQL 11. Capita s SIMS (School Information Management System using dbattach.exe) 18

Files and Folders Backup The Files and folders plugin is used to backup flat files that are local to the machine which you have installed a Redstor Online Backup Plus Client on. It will automatically detect any local drives that are available. For a backup of flat files, best practice will nearly always be to put a backup client on to every machine that you wish to protect. If this is not possible, in most cases this is due to an unsupported OS such as Windows 2000 or a NAS device, please use the Network shares plugin to backup the data. Setting your First Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. Under Detected sources, find Files and folders 3. To the right of Files and folders, click Add 4. Tick the drives/folders/files that you wish to protect, or the whole FileSystem. If you tick the FileSystem, drive or a folder, you can then deselect files or folders underneath that you wish to exclude from the selection. If you have selected at a higher level, all new files and folders underneath are automatically added to the selection. Ticking Show hidden files will display the files that Windows or a user have chosen to hide, show as ProgramData or certain Windows System Files. 5. Once you have chosen your selection, click Save 6. To start the backup now, click Run backup in the top right corner. If you do not click Run backup, the backup will start as per the schedule (this can be edited under Preferences ). Please note: if you have selected a Seeding backup (see Seeding Backups section), you will need to click Run seeding to start Amending Your Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. If no backup has run, find Files and folders under Detected sources 3. If a backup has run, find Files and folders under Protected sources 4. To the right of Files and folders, click Edit 5. Amend your backup selection as in Step 4 of Setting your First Backup Selection 6. Once you have chosen your selection, click Save 19

Files and Folders Restore Using the Redstor Online Backup Plus client, the Files and folders plugin can be used to restore flat files backed up with the Files and folders plugin on to the device you are currently on. You are able to restore this data into a different location on the same device and also to a Network Share. If you wish to restore to a different device on a different network, please install a Redstor Online Backup Plus client on to that machine in Restore Only Mode. With this plugin, you have the ability to restore individual files, as well as folders and drives. In addition to this granularity, Redstor Online Backup Plus can perform a True Delta Restore of files restored back to their original location. This enables the client to restore only the blocks of data that differ to the current version that resides on your device, enabling much faster restores of larger files. Please note: File and folder permissions are preserved in the restored versions. Choosing your Restore Selection 1. Go to the Restore tab 2. On the left hand side, click Files and folders 3. On the right hand side next to Session time, choose from your available restore points 4. Tick the drives/folders/files that you wish to restore. 5. Once you have chosen your selection, if you wish to restore to a different location, specify the location through Browse next to Restore to: or type the file path or UNC path. 6. Select whether you wish for the client to Skip files that have not changed in order to potentially reduce restore times by skipping the processing stage for files where it knows they have not changed. 7. Click Restore 8. If no Restore to location has been specified, you will be prompted with the option to Overwrite, to restore all files, or Skip, to restore only missing files. 9. A pop up message will appear once the restore is complete Search for Files 1. On the left hand side, where it says Search, search for file names or part of a file name 2. Tick the files, or versions of files, that you wish to restore 3. Click Restore to restore to the original location, or, as above, choose a different Restore to location 20

Network Shares Backup The Network shares plugin is used to backup data that is not local to the machine where the Redstor Online Backup Plus client is installed. An example could be a NAS box or perhaps another server where it is not desirable (or possible) to install the client due to disk space or OS. Setting your First Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. Under Available sources, find Network shares 3. To the right of Network shares, click Add 4. Press the cog ( ) button and specify the network share path (in the format \\servername\sharename), the domain name that the following user is part of (for authentication), name of the user which has adequate access to the network share and files within, and the corresponding password. 5. Click Save. 6. Tick the share/folders/files that you wish to protect, or the whole share. If you tick the share or a folder, you can then deselect files or folders underneath that you wish to exclude from the selection. If you have selected at a higher level, all new files and folders underneath are automatically added to the selection. 7. Once you have chosen your selection, click Save 8. If no backup has run, find Network shares under Available sources 3. If a backup has run, find Network shares under Protected sources 4. To the right of Network shares, click Edit 5. Amend your backup selection as in Step 4 of Setting your First Backup Selection 6. Once you have chosen your selection, click Save 21

Network Shares Restore Using the Redstor Online Backup Plus client, the Network shares plugin can be used to restore flat files backed up with the Network shares plugin on to the device you are currently on, or back to the original location if the original network share is available. You are able to restore this data into a different location on the same device that performed the backup and also to a Network Share. If you wish to restore to a different device on a different network, please install a Redstor Online Backup Plus client on to that machine in Restore Only Mode. With this plugin, you have the ability to restore individual files, as well as folders. On the left hand side, click Network shares 3. On the right hand side next to Session time, choose from your available restore points 4. Tick the folders/files that you wish to restore. 5. Once you have chosen your selection, if you wish to restore to a different location, specify the location through Browse next to Restore to: or type the file path or UNC path 6. 9. A pop up message will appear once the restore is complete 22

Microsoft SQL Backup The MS SQL plugin is used to backup SQL databases including the master database. Please note: If you have a clustered environment, you will need to install the client on each host; each client will only backup active databases on it s host. The MS SQL plugin uses the SqlServerWriter VSS Writer to detect your databases and perform the non disruptive backups, therefore the option to protect your SQL environment will only appear if you have Microsoft SQL installed and the client can see the VSS writer. If the option doesn't appear, please see our KB site for basic troubleshooting steps or contact support@redstor.com for further assistance. Setting your First Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. Under Detected sources, find MS SQL 3. To the right of MS SQL, click Add 4. Expand the VssMsSql and Default options. If this is successful, the client is able to talk to the VSS writer and see the databases. If you have selected at the VssMsSql or Default level, all new databases underneath are automatically added to the selection. Once you have chosen your selection, click Save 5. To start the backup now, click Run backup in the top right corner. If you do not click Run backup, the backup will start as per the schedule (this can be edited under Preferences ). Please note: if you have selected a Seeding backup (see Seeding Backups section), you will need to click Run seeding to start. Please note: If the database uses the Simple Recovery mode, its logs are truncated automatically by the MS SQL server when the database reaches a transaction checkpoint. Amending Your Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. If no backup has run, find MS SQL under Detected sources 3. If a backup has run, find MS SQL under Protected sources 4. To the right of MS SQL, click Edit 5. Amend your backup selection as in Step 4 of Setting your First Backup Selection 6. Once you have chosen your selection, click Save 23

Microsoft SQL Restore Using the Redstor Online Backup Plus client, the MS SQL plugin can be used to restore SQL databases backed up with the MS SQL plugin on to the device you are currently on. You are not able to restore this data onto a Network Location, but you can restore to a different location to the original on the same device. If you wish to restore to a different device, please install a Redstor Online Backup Plus client on to that machine in Restore Only Mode, but please ensure that this server has Microsoft SQL installed on it. Using the Backup client, you only have the ability to restore your full databases. If you wish to perform a single item level recovery from within a database, you will need to first restore the database (or present it using the Virtual Drive functionality) and then use a third party tool. Choosing your Restore Selection 1. Stop the SQL Server Service in Windows Services 2. Go to the Restore tab in the Redstor Online Backup Plus GUI 3. On the left hand side, click MS SQL 4. On the right hand side next to Session time, choose from your available restore points 5. Tick the databases that you wish to restore. 6. Once you have chosen your selection, click Restore to restore to the original location, or use Restore to to restore to a different local location. 7. Click Restore 8. If no Restore to location has been specified, you will be prompted with the option to Overwrite, to restore all files, or Skip, to restore only missing files. 9. A pop up message will appear once the restore is complete 10. Start the SQL Server Service in Windows Services 24

Microsoft Exchange Backup The MS Exchange plugin is used to backup your Exchange Stores, including the edb files and logs. The MS Exchange plugin uses the Microsoft Exchange Writer VSS Writer to detect your Exchange and perform the non disruptive backups, therefore the option to protect your Exchange environment will only appear if you have Microsoft Exchange installed and the client can see the VSS writer. If the option doesn't appear, please see our KB site for basic troubleshooting steps or contact for further assistance. Setting your First Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. Under Detected sources, find Exchange 3. To the right of Exchange, click Add 4. Expand the VssExchange and Exchange Server options. If this is successful, the client is able to talk to the VSS writer and see the databases. If you have selected at the VssExchange or Exchange Server level, all new datastores underneath are automatically added to the selection. Please note: Please ensure that Circular Logging is disabled before running your backups. Logs will be automatically truncated at the end of each backup. Amending Your Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. If no backup has run, find Exchange under Detected sources 3. If a backup has run, find Exchange under Protected sources 4. To the right of Exchange, click Edit 5. Amend your backup selection as in Step 4 of Setting your First Backup Selection 6. Once you have chosen your selection, click Save 25

Microsoft Exchange Restore Using the Redstor Online Backup Plus client, the Exchange plugin can be used to restore Exchange databases and/or logs backed up with the Exchange plugin on to the device you are currently on. You are not able to restore this data onto a Network Location, but you can restore to a different location to the original on the same device. If you wish to restore to a different device, please install a Redstor Online Backup Plus client on to that machine in Restore Only Mode. Using the Backup client, you only have the ability to restore your full databases, not individual messages. If you wish to perform a single item level recovery from within a database, you will need to first restore the database (or present it using the Virtual Drive functionality) and then use a third party tool. Please contact Redstor Support for more information regarding third party tools we can provide. Choosing your Restore Selection 1. Go to the Restore tab 2. On the left hand side, click Exchange 3. On the right hand side next to Session time, choose from your available restore points 4. Tick the databases and/or logs that you wish to restore. 5. Once you have chosen your selection, click Restore to restore to the original location, or use Restore to to restore to a different local location. 6. Click Restore 7. A pop up message will appear once the restore is complete The next steps for the restore depend on your version of Exchange. Exchange Dismount the current database: a. Go to the Exchange Management Console b. In the console tree, expand Organization Configuration, and then click Mailbox c. In the work panel change the status of Databases from this group to Dismounted. 2. Go to the database file path (e.g. C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group) and copy it to any temporary location. 3. 30 VMware Backup The VMware plugin is used to backup VMware Virtual Machines and their VMDK s from anywhere with network access to your vcenter environment using VMware s vstorage API. For this reason, we would advise that you install the Redstor Online Backup Plus client on to a machine on the same network as the VMkernel port on your ESX host(s) when possible, to help achieve optimal performance. In order to reduce internal network traffic during backups, we would recommend installing a client on to a dedicated VM on the same host as the VM s it will be protecting, when possible. To help reduce processing times, it is recommended to enable Change Block Tracking on each VM that will be protected. Although these optimisation tips should increase performance, there are other factors which could affect plugin speed. Please speak to support@redstor.com for more information. Please note: This plugin uses the vstorage API which is only available on full paid versions of ESX. Therefore, if you are using a free version of VMware, you cannot use this plugin; please see the VDR functionality for ways to protect your VM s. It is also worth noting, you can only perform backups of VMware v5.5 from a 64bit Redstor Online Backup Plus Client. Setting your First Backup Selection 1. Go to the Backup tab 2. Under Available sources, find VMware 3. To the right of VMware, click Add 4. Press the cog ( ) button and specify the VMware environment you wish to protect. 40 SIMS Restore Using the Redstor Online Backup Plus client, the SIMS data plugin can be used to restore your SIMS databases and associated files backed up with the SIMS data plugin on to the device you are currently on. If you wish to restore to a different device, please install a Redstor Online Backup Plus client on to another machine in Restore Only Mode. With this plugin, you have the ability to restore individual files, as well as folders. On the left hand side, click SIMS data 3. On the right hand side next to Session time, choose from your available restore points 4. Tick the folders or.bak files (for each database) that you wish to restore. 5. Please note: For the SIMS DocStorage/Shared locations, you will need to either restore to original location and override the files there or copy them over after restoring to a temp location. 39

Seeding Backups The Seeding process allows the client to perform offline backups to a local location (USB drive for instance, either locally connected or via a UNC Share) which can then be uploaded later from another location. This allows clients with poorer bandwidths to backup large quantities of data by allowing the client to run backups of large quantities of new data offline, and then resume incrementals online which their bandwidth can handle. Please note: Once seeding has been performed, all restores are disabled until the seed has been completed & uploaded. To enable seeding you need to go into Preferences, then Seeding. You will then need to choose the location for the offline seed and then click Enable seeding. The client will check the location is available and will not enable if the location cannot be found. If additional permissions are needed, please allow the Service Contoller to run with administrator credentials through Windows Services. Once enabled, a yellow bar will appear across the top of the client stating it is in seeding mode and performing offline backups. If you now go back to the Backup tab you will see the Backup button is replaced with Run seeding. Seeding will NOT run to the schedule, it must be manually initiated. If you have accidently enabled seeding you also get the option to disable seeding. Please note: you cannot disable the seeding process once it has started to run. You can then run as many seeds as you wish, which helps in the event that you get any errors with the backups, such as access is denied, or if you decide to add more data. Once you are happy that all your data has been backed up, you can choose the option at the top to Complete seeding. 40

Once you have clicked Complete seeding, you may then disconnect the seeding device. Please then package up the USB drive (or other device) safely and ship to the address below with a slip enclosed stating your company name & an address to return the device to if it is your own: FAO: Redstor Support Redstor Limited St James Wharf Kings Road Reading Berkshire RG1 3DD While you are waiting for the data to be uploaded you will see this message on the client. Once a seed is completed and preparing to upload, the client will continue to perform incremental backups to the schedule. This means that you have protection on every scheduled day while the seed is uploading. This message will disappear once the seed upload is completed, restores will then be re enabled automatically. 41

Using a LocalSpeedVault To enable the LocalSpeedVault (LSV) functionality of the client, tick the tickbox in the LocalSpeedVault section of the Preferences Menu and state the location of the USB drive/nas/network share to be used as the LSV, then click Save in the bottom right. There is also a section for a username/password incase permissions are required to read&write to a non local location. There is also a Synchronisation status which shows the current status of the LSV. To minimise the amount of data that needs to be downloaded, we recommending setting up your LSV before running your first full backup. LocalSpeedVaults can be an extremely useful tool however they require some forethought to be 100% effective. Firstly, the type of hardware of your LSV should depend on the size of your incremental backups and the number of accounts/systems using that disk. For a single 100GB account, a 500GB hard drive with a USB2.0 will work fine in most circumstances. However if you have a single 2TB USB2.0 drive attached to one server running as a network share for five accounts to use as a LSV, you will most likely push the I/O on that disk to max and prevent backups/speed vault syncs to operate at full speed, or in some cases cause the backups to stop altogether. In that instance, it may be better to have two USB3.0 1TB disks or a NAS system. Second is the size of the disk. You will need an equal amount of space as data stored on the platform. This is roughly a 1:1 ratio for standard Files and folders on a 60 day retention, however you should think about expansion and future growth of data stored. 42

Using the Script Functionality Scripts allow bespoke and custom applications to be backed up via the client. They can also help with other tasks such as maintenance to start before or after backups. 1. Go the Preferences tab 2. On the left hand side, click Scripts 3. On the right hand side, click Add script 4. Choose a name for your script, credentials to run the script under, a timeout (if required), tick the option to fail the backup on error (if required), and then enter your windows command line style script 5. Click Save 6. On the left hand side, click Schedule 7. Edit an existing schedule, or create a new schedule, selecting your script as either a Pre backup or Post backup job from the appropriate drop down menu 8. Click Save 43

Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) From version of Redstor Online Backup Plus, we are pleased to announce the addition of Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) to our range of restore options. Providing that you are using v or above, this latest recovery feature enables you to create bootable USB media which can be used with a standard Windows File System and System State backup to greatly simplify the recovery of a failed system back to same or similar hardware, all without the need to install the OS or applications prior to system recovery. The BMR tool is available to download from our knowledge base site (kb.redstor.com). BMR is capable of recovering the following Windows Operating Systems : Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 / Windows 8.1 Windows Server 2008 / Windows Server 2008 R2 / Windows SBS 2011 Windows Server 2012 / Windows Server 2012 R2 Please note: BMR requires a full System State backup and System Disk backup (if your essential system files are installed to a different drive, please ensure they are also selected) to be completed successfully on version or above. If you are not sure about the correct selection of system files, we recommend that you perform a test restore.this release of the BMR functionality is for "same or similar" hardware only. This also currently means that the hard drive you use must be the same type and size. For example, if the original disk was a 250GB SSD, the new disk must also be a 250GB SSD; a 250GB HDD may not work. Using the BMR Tool To perform a BMR recovery you need to run the Bare Metal Recovery Tool on a device (your local PC should be fine) to create the bootable media. The wizard will prompt for a drive to use for the boot media (a >4GB usb stick would be fine for this). Once the BMR client image has been created on the usb stick you can then use this to boot from on the new hardware that you wish to restore an image backup to. We also have an.iso image of the BMR Tool available on our kb.redstor.com site. When booted, you are met with a command prompt where you can enter network settings prior to loading the BMR client, if specifically required. Input 0 to proceed. The BMR client then opens a portable version of Firefox and prompts for Personal access details which are very similar to the install process at the start of this user guide. 47

Once connected to your account, using the Start disk manager option under the Restore tab, run a clean command on the new hard drive. Included in the BMR Client, there is also a command prompt and a preferences menu for you to make any other configuration changes that your new machine may require. Once complete, you can commence the BMR recovery, choosing what data you wish to be included. You will be asked to confirm that you are happy for all existing files to be overwritten. Once finished, reboot the machine and your OS should boot. For further information and specifics regarding Bare Metal Recovery, please contact support@redstor.com. 48

Continuous Restore During installation, if you try to reconnect to an existing account, you will get the option to create a Restore Only Client. A Restore Only Client (also sometimes referred to as a Read Only Client) can be installed on any machine where a client doesn t already reside and can be used to perform restores to a different location, without the risk of performing a backup and compromising backup data integrity. From version 14, you get a new option which enables you to perform continuous restores. When the feature is on, the additional computer connects to the Redstor platform every 30 minutes and checks for updates. This time interval can be customized through the config.ini file. [General] SessionsUpdatePeriodicityForReadOnlyModeInSeconds=<periodicity in seconds> If an update is available, a restore takes place. This way the additional computer always has the most current version that mirrors the data on the main computer. Due to the nature of the System State data source, it cannot be restored to the same computer that is used for the continuous restore (otherwise all files and settings would be overwritten). That is why there is no System State option in the vertical menu on the Continuous Restore tab. System State can be restored to a virtual machine using the Virtual Disaster Recovery feature. To access the feature, choose Continuous Restore > Virtual Disaster Recovery. Configure access to the virtual machine and save the changes. All other data sources are handled in the same way as during the regular restore mode. 49
