2 Materials and Cutting Use the chart at right to determine yardage and cut pieces for a lap-, full- or queen size quilt. Full- and queen-size yardages and cutting quantities/sizes are given in parentheses following the lap-size information. To cut width-of-fabric strips, fold yardage wrong sides together, with selvages matching, and use a rotary cutter and ruler to cut the indicated number and width of strips from each fabric. Trim the selvages from each end of the cut strips. If you prefer a vertical seam on the quilt back, you'll need 3 3 /4 yards of fabric. 3 Make the Strip Sets Separate the cut strips for Strip Set A into 2 equal stacks. Working with one Strip Set A stack, arrange the strips as shown below. 6 1 /2" (11", 12") 11/2" 2 1 /2" Sew adjacent strips together along the long raw edges, making three sets of two sewn strips. Finally, sew the four sewn strips to the three sewn strips to make one Strip Set A. Repeat with the remaining stack to make a second strip set. 41/2" (7 1 /2", 8") 3 1 /2" (5 3 /4", 6") 21/2" 1 1 /2" Sew two of the sewn strips together along one long raw edge, making one set of four sewn strips. Sew the remaining set of two sewn strips to the single strip along one long raw edge. To make Strip Set B, place the strips according to the illustration below, and sew the strips together as in Step 1. Make the Stripes Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut the following segments from Strip Set A: 4 segments at 6 1 /2" (3 at 11", 3 at 12") for Stripe 2 4 segments at 3 1 /2" (3 at 5 3 /4", 3 at 6") for Stripe 8 4 segments at 2 1 /2" (3 at 4", 3 at 4 1 /4") for Stripe 12 8 segments at 1 1 /2" (6 at 2 1 /4", 6 at 2 1 /2") for Stripes 14 and 18 TIP: Align ruler guidelines along a seamline in the strip set to cut segments. To complete Stripe 2, join the four segments together along the short edges, making sure the narrow strip of one segment is sewn to the wider strip of another segment. Complete Stripes 8, 12, 14, and 18 in the same way. Cut these segments from Strip Set B: 8 segments at 2 1 /2" (6 at 4", 6 at 4 1 /2") for Stripes 6 and 16 8 segments at 1 1 /2" (6 at 2 1 /4", 6 at 2 1 /2") for Stripes 4 and 10 Join four same-sized segments along the short edges to complete Stripes 6, 16, 4 and 10. 4 Assembly Using the Construction Diagram as a guide, position the strip set and background stripes. Shift the stripes vertically or rotate the stripes 180º so that seams and fabrics don t align. Place two lengths of painter s tape on your design wall or a large table to designate the height of the quilt. Use the tape as a guide when shifting the stripes. Temporarily set stripe 13 aside. Sew adjacent strip set and background stripes together along one long edge, making 9 sets of two sewn stripes. Sew two sewn stripes together along one long edge, making sets of four sewn stripes. Continue joining the sewn strips, to make two sections of sewn stripes. Join the two sections of sewn stripes to either side of Stripe 13 to complete the quilt top. Trim any excess fabric from the top and bottom edges of the quilt top. Cut the backing fabric into equallength panels as indicated below. Trim the selvages and sew the panels together along the trimmed edge to make the quilt back. Finishing Layer and baste together the backing, batting and quilt top. Accent the linear quality of the stripes by quilting straight lines parallel with the stripes. Vary the spacing between lines of quilting to create a secondary set of stripes. Construction Diagram A B Strip Set A Strip Set A, rotated Strip Set B Strip Set B, rotated B A B A A B A Using a walking foot, baste around the outer edge of the quilt, 1 /8" from the edge of the quilt top. Use a rotary cutter and ruler to trim the excess batting and backing even with the edge of the quilt top. Bind the quilt. USE A WALKING FOOT to tame thick layers and stitch straight lines. Align previous lines of quilting with the edge of the presser foot, or the walking foot guide. Stripe: QUILT BACK PANELS Cut the backing fabric into panels of equal length, according to quilt size. 5 Binding the Quilt With right sides together, place the ends of two binding strips perpendicular to each other, forming a right angle. Mark and then stitch a diagonal line from corner to corner where the strips intersect. Trim the strip ends 1 /4" from the seam and press the seam open. Repeat to join all the strips into one long binding strip. Smooth the binding end under the angled start of the binding. Using the pressed angled edge as a guide, mark a 45º line on the binding end. Move the angled start aside, and mark a second line on the binding end, 1 /4" toward the binding start. Trim the binding end on the second line. Use the first marked line as a stitch guide when sewing the binding ends together. With the strip wrong side up, trim the left end of the strip at a 45-degree angle. Press 1/4" to the wrong side along the angled edge. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together. Press. Beginning with the angled end of the binding, align the raw edge of the binding with the raw edge of the quilt top. Starting about 6" from the binding end, stitch the binding to the quilt, using a 1 /4" seam. Stop stitching 1 /4" from the corner of the quilt and backstitch to secure. Cut the threads and remove the quilt from the machine. Place the angled ends right sides together, so that the strips will align when stitched with a 1 /4" seam. Stitch the strips together along the angled edge. Finger press the seam open, then fold the binding in half. Align the raw edges of the binding with the raw edges of the quilt and sew the binding to the quilt. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt, encasing the raw edges of the quilt top, and mitering the corners. Slip stitch the binding to the back of the quilt, covering the previous stitching. Fold the binding back on itself, making a 45º fold, then fold the binding down to align with the next edge of the quilt. Begin stitching 1 /4" from the corner, backstitching to secure the seam. Repeat at all corners to secure the binding to the quilt. Stop stitching about 9" from the binding start, and backstitch to secure the seam. Use this finishing method with bias- or straight-cut double fold binding. PAGE 5 OF 5
