Founded in 1899, Frontier College is Canada s original literacy organization. Frontier College recognizes that literacy is an essential skill and a right. Frontier College delivers literacy programs by recruiting and training volunteer tutors to work in communities across the country to provide myriad literacy programs for children, youth and adults. Frontier College staff and volunteers work in many places inner city neighbourhoods, prisons, Aboriginal communities helping children, youth and adults strengthen their literacy skills in order to further their learning and life goals. British Columbia Building Foundations for Success at Aunt Leah s Place Aunt Leah s Place is a special place where young people in government care begin a successful transition to independence and adulthood by learning essential life skills and establishing a greater sense of self-worth. Frontier College tutors work one-to-one with youth from diverse backgrounds, including some with developmental disabilities, to support them in their studies. 5 Improving Literacy Across Canada Last summer, 5,894 CHILDREN participated in 1,608 days of camp at Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps in 84 communities across Canada. We distributed 96,790 29,655 free books across Canada, representing a value of $967, % increase in participation over last year! We worked with 468 community PARTNERS The value these partners bring to our programs by providing space, staff, snacks and supplies is $936,000. We had We served participants across Canada. We held 139 literacy workshops, conferences and training sessions with 2,362 community members and organizers. This includes learners, children attending Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps, and visitors to our Reading Tents. 2,631 volunteers donate 96,901 hours to Frontier College. Their time is valued at $1,744,218. ALBERTA new brunswick YUKON Strengthening the Next Generation in Skilled Trades Boyle Street Community Services Water Wings Program Literacy is essential to completing job applications, writing a resume, and other employment search activities. In partnership with Boyle Street Community Services, Frontier College is helping adults overcome multiple barriers to attain meaningful employment and to lead productive lives. The Water Wings Program is an employment readiness and educationupgrading program that assists marginalized, unemployed youth and adults with the process of obtaining employment. Through a step-bystep process, our tutors help individuals gain the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to achieve their career goals. The New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour (DPETL) encounters many skilled trade apprenticeship students who cannot advance to the education they seek because they have not passed the pre-requisite Essential Skills Test. Students need to refresh or relearn math, science and English skills in order to pass the test. DPETL worked with Frontier College to develop the Apprenticeship Essential Skills Test Study Program where our tutors work one-to-one with learners in a non-traditional classroom setting, providing instruction tailored to their specific needs. Supporting Employers with Workplace Training and Immigrant Settlement in the North In Whitehorse, Frontier College partners with Northern Vision Development LP Hotels to train and mentor its employees many of whom are Aboriginal or newcomers to Canada during regular work hours in areas like workplace and government documentation, proofreading, business writing instruction, customer service, and health and safety training. Frontier College s Labourer-Teachers assess the employers needs and work towards the mutual goals of improved performance and enhancing staff and customer relations. There are many compelling benefits to both the employer and employee: better job understanding, teamwork, increased quality of work, productivity and profitability.

7 Reading, Writing & Spelling Challenger Adult Reading Series 2nd Edition Reading Level: Literacy Grade 9 An eight-level, controlled-vocabulary program to develop reading, writing and reasoning skills which features a variety of classical and contemporary reading passages. Books in this series will take students from the beginning stages of reading right up to the pre-ged/ged levels.
