1 Drop off and Pick up Proposal Kirk Elementary School Karen Moore, Principal Educating parents and students on proper drop off and pick up procedures is essential in developing a safe and efficient system. We can begin by announcing in newsletters that there will be a change to these procedures coming in January. Parents should receive a full set of procedural changes with a place to sign for acknowledgement and acceptance of these changes. An initial parent meeting to discuss the drop off and pick up changes should be done in December before these procedures are enforced. Regular reminders of drop off and pick up procedures from school officials to students and parents will help to keep parents informed. Information provided to parents should be clearly stated, provide consistent messages, and be delivered regularly throughout the school year. Maps of the drop off and pick up area with traffic flow patterns will also be provided. Enforcement of drop off and pick up rules is essential in creating a safe drop off and pickup environment. We will have to start with extra staff and possibly ask law enforcement if they can assist in this matter. We may need to call the Tuscola County Sherriff s department to assist as well. We could possibly utilize parent volunteers in these areas. We will need more personnel in the beginning until parents become use to the new changes. Parking can be an issue. We have parents parking on the grass and in the no parking zones. We will also need more parking signs similar to the example listed below. These signs will give parents a visual of where it is not permitted to park.

2 Morning Drop Off Procedures As always, our goal is student safety. We want to create the safest and most efficient way to drop off your student. Please understand that our students safety depends on parents and staff following these procedures. Option 1: Drop off Lane (parents stay in the car) Parents may drop off students using the drop off lane located in front of the Kirk building. This lane is meant for drop off purposes only. There is no parking at any time in this area. When dropping your child(ren) off, please follow these standard procedures for morning drop off: Please be patient as we have many students who arrive to school by car. Please arrive on time. Students are allowed to go to their rooms at 7:45 a.m. Please do not bring your child(ren) to Kirk before 7:40 a.m. Double check for pedestrian traffic crossing the sidewalks or entering the drop off zone. Unload your child(ren) in the drop off zone only. Have your child(ren) ready to exit the vehicle when you reach the unloading zone. Please stay in your car. Only children should exit the car. Once in the unloading zone, have your child(ren) exit your vehicle from the right side. If they need to exit on the left of your vehicle, please have them cross in front of your vehicle. At no time while in the drop off lane should your car be unattended. This is not a parking zone. Option 2: Park and Enter Parents who are entering the building may park in the designated parking lot only. Please do not park in the drop off lane, as this will pose a major safety risk. If a car is parked in the drop off lane, it forces other cars to have to back up with other students entering the drop off lane. Please be patient as we have many students who arrive to school by car. If you do not have an appointment with a staff member, you will drop your student off inside the first set of front doors and then exit the building. If you have a scheduled appointment with a staff member, you must sign in at the office where an office member will check the scheduled appointment list. Please be prepared to show identification. A Note About Tardiness: Being on time is an important ingredient for future success. Together we are preparing your student for success in school, college and life. If you are arriving late, stressed and upset, that transfers to your child and they start their school day under those terms. In addition, being late is disruptive to the classroom. School begins at 7:59 a.m. If you arrive after 7:59, you must bring your child in to the office and sign them in. The student will receive a tardy slip to enter the class.

3 EARLY Pick up Procedures: (before 3:00) Please park in the designated parking lot. Do not park in the drop off lane. Early pick ups disrupt classroom activities. Please do everything possible to schedule appointments so that your child s full day of learning is not interrupted. Please notify the Kirk office before you pick your child up. Either a phone call from the student s parent or sending a note with the student is acceptable. Report to Kirk s office to pick up your student. The office will call your student s classroom to have your child meet you in the office. Please note the attendance policy. The office will mark the time the student was picked up. This will show as a partial absence in your child s record. Afternoon Pick up Procedures: Please park in the parking lot. Do not park in the drop off zone, as this poses a safety hazard to students who are exiting the building to walk to the busses as well as students who are entering the parking lot with their parents. All end of the day pick ups will be conducted as described below: Parents need to park in the designated parking lot. Please do not park in the dropoff zone as this creates safety issues. Parents who pick their child(ren) after school will need to fill out necessary paperwork (this will only need to be done once per year). Parents will receive a color coded number card with their child s name on it, authorized people for pick up of that child, and an ID number. (see example card) The children will receive a matching color coded number card (this should be attached to their book bag). Parents will enter through the main entrance and form a line in the designated area. (See attached Blueprint) Parent will sign their child(ren) out, and a staff member will go retrieve that student from the cafeteria. Cards will be matched. If they are not listed on the card, they will not be allowed to pick that student up. Parent must have picture identification as well as the color coded number card to pick up student. If you forget your color coded card, you must wait in the office until everyone else has picked up his or her child. Please do not send in anyone who is not on the emergency pick up card. We will not release students to anyone who does not appear on their emergency card. The doors for pick up will open at 3:00.

4 Parental Involvement: It is commonly acknowledged that one of the most important components of student achievement and success is parent involvement. We believe at Kirk Elementary School that you can never communicate too much and we encourage parental involvement. The purpose at Kirk Elementary School is to do whatever it takes for all students to acquire the knowledge and skills to become productive responsible citizens. The staff and faculty realize how important it is to work closely with our parents to provide our students with the highest, quality education possible. We believe that when families, schools and community groups work together to support learning, students stay in school longer, attend school more regularly, and perform better in school. With all of that said, it is very important to take precautions to prevent crisis in our building, and to create the safest school environment possible. It is very important to keep a balance between sufficient building security and providing students a healthy, nurturing, normal school environment. I have read and understand the new drop off and pick up procedures and agree to abide by the terms that will become effective January 6, Parent Signature Date
