This is an exciting opportunity to play a strategic role in supporting world-renowned, biomedical research and medical innovation focused on improving the health of children. As CHOP continues to advance its mission of translating innovative research findings into state-of-the-art patient care, the VPRA will play a pivotal role in supporting this rapidly growing research enterprise. With a commitment to excellence, and a newly developed strategic plan to support that commitment, CHOP intends to move from a world-class research institute to the undisputed leader in improving the health and saving the lives of children. The VPRA will work collaboratively across the research enterprise and within research administration to develop, implement, and oversee a full-service, customer-focused research administration and operations organization with the primary mission of supporting the research institute s basic, clinical, and translational research programs. Working in tandem with senior leaders of the research institute and principal investigators, the VPRA ensures - through the implementation of effective, metric-driven processes and transparent, open communication channels - delivery of proactive, user-focused customer service in the furtherance of new and on-going research initiatives across the institution, while also ensuring that all compliance standards are fully maintained. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in both high level strategic planning and day to day operational execution in a complex research enterprise housed within an academic medical center, academia, industry, or government setting. 2 Page 2 of 5 THE ORGANIZATION As the nation s first hospital devoted exclusively to caring for children, The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia is one of the country s foremost pediatric medical centers. Since its founding in 1855, CHOP has made vital contributions to the health of children worldwide. Today, it strives to be the world leader in the provision of pediatric healthcare by integrating excellent patient care, innovative research and forward thinking professional education into all of its programs. CHOP is regularly ranked among the best children s hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report surveys. The hospital s physician-scientists, medical leaders, and innovators in training contribute to leading-edge programs such as the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment, the Diagnostic Imaging Center, Craniofacial Reconstruction Center, the Cardiac Care Center, Pediatric Oncology, Pain Management, and the Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease, as well as numerous others. Every year, CHOP provides care for more than 25,000 inpatient admissions, 80,000 emergency room visits, and 1.4 million outpatient visits. CHOP s main campus features the 527-bed Main Hospital, the Richard D. Wood Ambulatory Care Center, and the rehabilitation facility Children s Seashore House. CHOP s newest building, the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, opened in 2015 and will ultimately add an additional 12 floors and 700,000 square feet of clinical facilities to CHOP s main campus. CHOP has an extensive ambulatory care network across Pennsylvania and New Jersey, including 31 primary care facilities, thirteen specialty care facilities, and partnerships with eleven community hospitals. CHOP s University City campus is the core of a healthcare system which houses Research Institute, one of the largest pediatric research facilities in the United States. RESEARCH AT CHOP CHOP is home to a world-renowned pediatric research center with one of the most robust research programs in the country. Formalized in 1972, it is now called The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute (CHOP Research). A separate organizational, administrative, and financial entity within the Hospital, CHOP Research is home to one of the largest pediatric research programs in the country, receiving roughly $119 million in total federal awards yearly, and boasting an annual budget of approximately $365 million as well more than 750,000 square feet of research space across three facilities. CHOP Research ranks among the top three pediatric hospitals nationwide in National Institutes of Health funding; its total research revenues in FY2016 were $221 million. Supported by a staff of over two thousand, more than 500 research institute investigators carry out clinical and laboratory research studies in every pediatric subspecialty and scientific inquiry, including AIDS, autism, cancer, cardiology, and genetics, as well as in public policy, and safety.

3 Page 3 of 5 CHOP Research is housed within nine research Centers of Emphasis, specifically established to focus on areas of research having the greatest impact on translating basic research findings into medical innovations. See In addition, CHOP Research has developed ten interdisciplinary Research Affinity Groups, dedicated to topics such as mitochondria and genomics. This group structure reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of many key research questions. The groups link multi-talented investigators with common research interests who are widely dispersed through the Institute, thereby encouraging, and supporting collaboration across disciplines. See And, with a primary goal of easing the burden on researchers and enabling them to focus more efficiently on their research, CHOP has established multiple institutional, departmental, and administrative core facilities which provide instrumentation and technical skill. Each year, the Hospital invests millions of dollars in sophisticated research instrumentation for the core facilities, which are lead by scientific or faculty directors and one or more technical directors. Laboratory research is conducted in newly constructed facilities which include 93 lab modules and numerous core facilities providing state-of-the-art shared research resources to Hospital investigators. See THE ROLE Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and Institutional Official, the VPRA is an integral member of the senior leadership team who, in partnership with faculty and staff, plays a pivotal role in furthering CHOP s mission of conducting world-renowned, biomedical research and translating it into ground-breaking, state-of-the-art pediatric patient care. The VPRA serves as a member on the Research Council, the CSO Leadership Team and works in close collaboration with the Office of General Counsel, and the Office of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs in ensuring that all regulatory requirements are consistently met. While functioning at both a strategic and day-to-day operational level, the VPRA is slated with further developing, refining, implementing and managing the research administrative units of Research Finance; Sponsored Projects and Business Management; Laboratory Animal Services; Research Communications; and Core Facilities Administration. Each of these units is overseen by a Senior Director, or Director, who in turn supervises a total staff of approximately 130 FTEs. With an annual operating budget of $365M, and a $10M annual capital budget, the VPRA develops, and assimilates into everyday practice, relevant metrics designed to measure efficiency, effectiveness and growth, which can then be applied to forecasting and strategic planning purposes. In addition, the VPRA represents the research institute to external agencies as necessary.

4 Page 4 of 5 As the administrative head responsible for overseeing and implementing a careful and orchestration of all aspects of research administration and operations, the VPRA attends to the following opportunities and challenges. OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES Leading and applying a strategic vision CHOP s Research Council recently developed a comprehensive strategic plan focused on supporting growth of the research through the application of best practices across the research enterprise. In concert with this plan, the VPRA participates in identifying appropriate areas for expansion of facilities, services and programs geared towards meeting the needs of a growing research enterprise. Emphasizing the delivery of excellent customer service at all times across the entire enterprise, the VPRA ensures the maintenance of institutional compliance. In this highly-visible role, the VPRA serves as the face of research administration both internally and externally. Staying abreast of all current healthcare trends in research, the VPRA will apply innovative and out-of-the-box strategic thinking toward forecasting departmental and institutional needs. Supporting and sustaining research excellence With a primary goal of enabling, supporting and facilitating institutional research, the VPRA sets by example and expectation, a standard of excellence throughout the research enterprise. The VPRA integrates innovative and creative best practices across the research community, ensuring a level of customer service and support which readily enables faculty and research staff to dedicate their efforts toward direct research activities. Facilitating and increasing collaboration and consensus. The VPRA functions in a highly-collaborative and inclusive manner, working with CHOP leadership in honing the implementation of the strategic plan to effectively meet the ongoing and changing needs of a growing research enterprise. As such, the VPRA participates in, contributes to, and collaborates with newly formed or newly structured advisory and oversight committees such as those addressing space requirements, bio-safety, and animal care and use. In addition, the VPRA works with the Office of Technology Transfer, Commercialization and Innovation in protecting CHOP s intellectual property and in furthering the translation of its research findings.

5 Page 5 of 5 Developing metrics for success The VPRA applies metric driven and strategic analysis in the review, evaluation, and on-going assessment of all administrative functions. In overseeing and directing all financial planning and reporting, the VPRA applies the necessary fiscal controls to ensure expenditures are allocated in the best interests of the institute. In partnership with the hospital CFO team, the VPRA ensures the fiscal health and sustainability of the research administrative infrastructure. Leading and inspiring staff The VPRA creates and supports a learning environment which fosters teamwork, cooperation, respect and diversity. Through the development and provision of on-going staff and investigator training, the VPRA establishes a user-friendly environment which ensures continuous and clearly defined opportunities for professional growth. Through careful and planned recruitment and mentoring, the VPRA also develops and encourages a culture which embraces change management and an openness to the exchange of ideas. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE The successful candidate has a proven track record of at least seven years of experience leading a research administrative infrastructure within an academic medical center or research institute, or within a research intensive university highly focused on life sciences research. While a bachelor s degree is a required minimum, an advanced degree in healthcare administration, finance or business is highly preferred. Thorough grounding in federal and other sponsored program regulations governing grant and contract administration is expected as is a track-record of demonstrated success in strategic planning and operational execution. In addition, the successful candidate has demonstrated success in supervising staff, delivering service to researchers, and leading within a matrixed management structure. Experience in leading a team through business-process improvement and organizational-change initiatives is highly desired as are advanced communication skills.
