The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) served as the source for the unemployment rates. Source websites are listed below: U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA): U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS): The BEA compiles employment and income data on a place of work basis, therefore a residence adjustment has been made. Employment and income data were compiled according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Gross Domestic Product was also compiled using NAICS. NAICS is a classification system developed jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico for improved comparability of industrial statistics across North America. Detailed information about data compilation is located in the Data Notes, Glossary, and Industry Classification section, pages Definitions of the major NAICS sector classifications are found on pages Due to processing time, the release of a majority of the data is lagged approximately 24 months. Additional economic and demographic data for Wyoming and its counties, including this report, are available electronically on the Economic Analysis Division s website, or by contacting: State of Wyoming Department of Administration and Information Economic Analysis Division 2800 Central Avenue Cheyenne, Wyoming Phone: (307) Fax: (307)
8 Summary EMPLOYMENT Total Employment United States From 2007 to 2010, the United States has not experienced an annual increase in total employment (number of jobs) 1. Total employment in the United States declined 0.3%, or 441,400 jobs, from 2009 to 2010, an improvement from the 3.0% decline (5,436,100 jobs) between 2008 and Although employment is falling at a decelerating rate, total employment in the United States continues to trend downward. Still, between 2004 and 2010, employment has experienced net growth of 2.8% (4,740,700 jobs). Wyoming Between 2009 and 2010, total employment in Wyoming fell by 2,724 jobs, or 0.7%. Despite a decrease in employment since 2008, the percent change in total employment in Wyoming from 2004 to 2010 remained the third highest in the nation at 12%, or 41,378 jobs. This was due to outstanding growth between 2004 and 2008, when 55,424 jobs were added to the workforce. Between 2004 and 2010, Wyoming exhibited the third largest percentage increase in total employment in the United States behind Texas (13.2%) and Utah (12.5%). Chart 1: Percent Change in Employment by County, Albany Big Horn Campbell Carbon Converse Crook Fremont Goshen Hot Springs Johnson Laramie Lincoln Natrona Niobrara Park Platte Sheridan Sublette Sweetwater Teton Uinta Washakie Weston Percent As depicted in Chart 1, all twenty three counties in Wyoming exhibited employment growth between 2004 and During this period the counties that registered the largest increases in total employment include Sublette (58.5%) and Campbell (27.8%). 1 The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) calculates total employment by surveying individual employers and/or establishments. These employers report the number of both full-time and part-time workers. Employees, sole proprietors, and active partners are included, but unpaid family members and volunteers are not included. Employment figures represent number of jobs, not employed people. If an individual holds two separate jobs at any given time, the individual is counted twice, since two employment positions are occupied. 2
9 Non-Farm Employment by Type and Industry United States Of the twenty non-farm primary North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2 sectors, the United States saw the greatest annual employment growth in Mining (5.1%), Administrative and Waste Services (3.6%), and Educational Services (2.6%) between 2009 and Several sectors experienced declines in total employment including Construction (-6.4%), Information (-3.1%), and Manufacturing (-2.3%). Wyoming From 2009 to 2010, Wyoming experienced employment growth in Management of Companies and Enterprises (11.6%), Educational Services (5.7%), and Forestry, Fishing, and Related Activities (2.6%). Percent Chart 3: Unemployment Rates for the United States and Wyoming United States Wyoming Chart 3 illustrates unemployment rates for the U.S. and Wyoming. Wyoming has generally has lower unemployment rates than the United State. By 2011, neither have reached pre-recession levels. Chart 4: Unemployment Rates for Wyoming Counties, Percent As seen in Chart 4, the Wyoming counties with the lowest unemployment rates in 2011 were Sublette (3.5%), Albany (4.6%), and Campbell (4.6%). The counties with the highest unemployment rates were Lincoln (8.3%), Teton (7.6%), Johnson (7.1%), and Fremont (7.1%). 3 The unemployment rate is calculated by dividing the number of unemployed persons by the total civilian labor force, or a combination of all employed and unemployed persons. Persons under the age of 16, persons in an institution such as a nursing home or corrections facility, and persons serving on active duty in the armed forces are not included in the civilian labor force. 4 The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines unemployed persons as those ages 16 and over who do not have a job, have actively looked for a job in the prior four weeks before the survey, and are currently available for work. Actively looking for work includes contacting potential employers, sending out resumes or filling out applications, and placing or answering advertisements among other methods of seeking employment. 4

The states with the largest numerical increases in TPI were California ($60,872,490,000), Texas ($47,998,181,000), and New York ($38,497,221,000). Wyoming From 2009 to 2010, Wyoming was ahead of the United States in percent TPI growth with an increase of 4.1%, or $991.4 million. Platte (8.3%), Goshen (6.3%), and Niobrara (6.3%) counties displayed the greatest statewide percentage increases in TPI between 2009 and Chart 5: Total Personal Income by County $4,500,000 $4,000,000 $3,500,000 Dollars (thousands) $3,000,000 $2,500,000 $2,000,000 $1,500, $1,000,000 $500,000 - Total personal income by county is exhibited in Chart 5. All twenty three counties demonstrated positive TPI growth from 2009 to Income is broadly defined as revenue from all sources, i.e. businesses; Federal, State, local and foreign governments; households; and institutions. 6 Total personal income, as defined by the BEA, is the current income of residents in a particular area from all sources. It is measured as the sum of wage and salary disbursements, supplements to wages and salaries, proprietors' income with inventory valuation and capital consumption adjustments, rental income of persons with capital consumption adjustment, personal dividend income, personal interest income, and personal current transfer receipts, less contributions for government social insurance. See data notes. 5
12 Per Capita Personal Income United States Per capita personal income (PCI) 7 in the United States was $41,663 in 2010, a 4.3% increase from Wyoming In 2010, Wyoming PCI was $44,961, $3,298 above the national average. Wyoming s PCI increased 3.2% from Chart 6 Chart 6 displays per capita personal income by county for Wyoming in Teton County had the highest PCI in the State at $94,672, or 210% of Wyoming s PCI ($44,961). Teton has consistently possessed the highest PCI in the State due to the dividends and interest components of income. Sublette County demonstrated Wyoming s second highest PCI of $55,342. Sublette County is home to two of the nation s largest natural gas fields, the Pinedale Anticline and Jonah Field. Higher wages associated with Mining sector and small population-size were the reasons for Sublette s high PCI. 7 Per capita income (PCI) is calculated by dividing total personal income of an area by the total population of that area. PCI estimates offset population discrepancy unaccounted for in TPI estimates. However, these estimates may be misleading in areas where unusual conditions occur (bumper crop, natural disaster, etc.), those that are affected by a large institutional population (college, prison, etc.) or those where population changes rapidly. See data notes on page 99. 6
