More Pressure Than Ever On IT October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 3
Installed Application Issues The nature of installed applications cause application management to be difficult. Installed applications hard wire their hosts to specific functionality Application installation is not portable. Applications can conflict on multiple levels Updates are difficult resulting in weeks of updating. Application compatibility is one of the top issue facing the enterprise Managing applications is costly. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 4
Installed Application Issues Customer pain is passed on to ISV or Repackaging Groups Installation scripts are complex Some applications can be very large in size (GBs) and difficult to quickly deliver. Possible conflicts slow update process significantly Repackaging of applications for patching is time consuming Applications conflicts with different versions of themselves requiring a hard cutover or upgrade date resulting in only one version of the software available. Applications may not be compatible with multi-user windows (Terminal Services) October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 5
Applications: What is really needed? Applications transformed into easily hosted units of application functionality (services) Available over any network including Internet Rich user experience End to application compatibility issues No rewriting of application library Ubiquitous answer for Enterprise application classes The transformation of applications into an efficiently controlled entity that results in optimized desktop manageability. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 6

SoftGrid Application Virtualization Applications are virtualized per instance: Files (incl System Files) Registry Fonts.ini COM/DCOM objects Services Name Spaces Semafores, Mutexes Applications do not get installed or alter the operating system Yet tasks process locally on the host computer. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 11
SoftGrid Integration w/ SMS Flexible application deployment: Pre-cached to clients with traditional updates Pre-cached with dynamic updates Pure dynamic delivery 9 Integrated reports and metering 9 Enterprise scale October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 12
SoftGrid ZeroTouch: Desktop and Web Availability Access to all applications (desktop, terminal server & web) from a consolidated view. Available from anywhere (home, remote office, kiosk, hoteling) Available via web page and/or desktop icons Enables access to remote desktop October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 13
SoftGrid ZeroTouch: Application Self- Service Provisioning The Old Way With ZeroTouch October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 14
SoftGrid ZeroTouch: Business Unit Self- Service Reporting IT and Business Units can view reports on application usage without asking IT. Reports include: User/workgroup utilization Application utilization Software audit Allows IT and business units to meet compliance requirements around licensing. Allows for business units to know how much they are spending and how much adding new applications will cost. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 15
Eliminate App Conflicts & Regression Tests Enable any application to run side-byside on desktops and servers without conflicts Dramatically reduce the need for compatibility/regression testing Consolidate terminal servers by eliminating silos and underutilization Enable multiple versions of the same application to run on the same computer at the same time The Medical Center at University of Illinois cut 100 hours of regression testing that was previously required to roll out new applications. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 16
Centralize & Accelerate Application Availability With Microsoft SoftGrid, application deployments and updates are dramatically accelerated. Once an application is virtualized, it can be deployed instantly to any and all global users on the Windows client device from a central console. Eliminate installations and dramatically reduce compatibility testing Updates are now one file change on a server Terminations are one change to the management console Case Studies: sanofi-aventis accelerated application deployments and updates from 2 weeks to just 3 hours. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 17
Reduce Application Management Costs The Softricity Desktop reduces and eliminates many common application management steps and optimizes computing resources, dramatically reducing labor and capital costs. Reduce management costs up to 80% Deployments, updates and termination Reduce help desk call by up to 30% Improve user uptime by 4X Consolidate servers Reduce license compliance risks Case Study: Scotland s Dundee City Council saved $290,000 (155,000 UK pounds) on IT support, replacement, server consolidation and license agreements. Without Softricity Regression test: 21 hours ESD Package : 3.5 hours Install test comp.: 2.5 hours With Softricity Total: 35 HoursMicrosoft Total: has 4 developed hours Test ESD Package: 8 hours a Forrester TEI Compliant calculator to help you determine how Microsoft SoftGrid can save application management costs Sequence : 4 hours October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 18
Simplify & Accelerate OS Migrations The SoftGrid accelerates OS Migrations by reducing the dependencies and testing between applications and the operating system Elimination of application conflicts and testing accelerates migrations Virtualized applications can be deployed to variety of systems Case Study: Suncor Energy migrated over 1,300 applications on 3,200 desktops to XP in just 3.5 months. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 19
Consolidate, Standardize and Stabilize Images Before SoftGrid Reduce the size and complexity of images Move closer to the goal of a single image for the entire enterprise Repurpose systems without constant re-imaging With SoftGrid Case Study: Fidelity National Financial reduced 13 virtual images into one with SoftGrid October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 20
Reduce Support Calls SoftGrid reduces help desk calls by over 30% by making it easier for IT to resolve problems centrally and reducing the likelihood of problems in the first place Problem resolution is applicationcentric, not system-wide Reduce visits to computer by fixing problems remotely Deployment is pulled and not installed, leading to a higher success rate 11% 4% 18% 15% Helpdesk Deskside visits Engineering Patch Mgmt Overhead Case Study: Heartland Financial used to spend 2 hours on the phone with a single user. With SoftGrid it takes less than 10 minutes to solve a user s problem. 52% Source: 2003 Intel IT Avg. Quarterly Spending on desktop PC support October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 21
Build Business Continuity for Applications With The SoftGrid, applications can be replicated like other data, reducing the costs of synchronizing applications and user down time. Applications are automatically replicated: desktops and terminal server are updated without installation User down time is reduced to minutes instead of hours/days Case Study: A Major Investment : Company enabled applications to be available to their users at their backup site in minutes. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 22
Enable Roaming and Free Seating The SoftGrid makes it possible for users to share Windows desktops and laptops. Any user can access any computer on the network to get their applications. Machines become generic instead of user-specific Useful for office hoteling, business continuity, computer labs and branch servers Case Study: Northeastern University uses SoftGrid to provide access to any application from any computer on campus. October 17-18, 2006 l Santa Clara, CA 23
Consolidate Terminal Servers SoftGrid allows any application to run along-side any other on a terminal server, eliminating the need for silos and increasing utilization, resulting in the need for less servers.
