1 On Your Marks: Under-5s Day 1 Jesus calls the fishermen Mark 1:14 20 Simple Story Meeting Jesus Pictures of Jesus, fishermen and disciples (web download: Day 1 resource sheets pages 1 9); sticky tack; white board (or similar). 1. Print out the pictures on card, cut them out and colour them. If you want to make them more hard-wearing then laminate the coloured pictures. 2. Make sure that all the children can see your board. As you tell the story put up the relevant pictures on the board. Peter and his brother Andrew were fishermen. (Put up two fishermen pictures.) They would stand in the water, with a net. When they saw the fish swimming along, they would throw the net into the water and catch the fish. One day, they saw a man walking along the beach. It was Jesus. (Put up Jesus picture.) Come with me, called Jesus. Instead of catching fish, come and help me do my work. Peter and Andrew stopped fishing. They left the nets on the beach. They went with Jesus. (Take off fishermen pictures and replace with two men.) A little way along the shore, James and John were getting ready to go fishing in their boat. (Put up other two fishermen pictures.) Come with me, called Jesus. Instead of catching fish, come and help me do my work. James and John left their boat. They went with Jesus too. (Take down fishermen pictures and put up two men.) Andrew, James and John were very happy they had met Jesus. Peter, 3. You may like to let the children use your pictures to tell the story again. 2 Creative story Paper People Concertina sets of people for all the children (person template, instructions and diagrams can be found as a web download: Day 1 resource sheets' pages 10 and 11); a completed concertina set for the leader; crayons. 1 For this activity, use the template and make enough photocopies for five concertina people per child. Make sure the arm is at the edge of the page. Tape the people together with the arms and feet meeting. Alternatively, photocopy the figures on to card and use as a template to draw on to longer pieces of paper. 2 Fold the sheets to make a concertina with one person on each fold. Cut round the edges of the person leaving it folded. Make one concertina set for each child and one for the leader to use. Step-by step instructions, with diagrams, for making the concertina are available on the Web resources. 3 Use the completed line of people to tell the Bible story: Jesus was walking along the beach, on his own: one man, walking along. (Hold up the front of the concertina people.) Jesus saw Peter and Andrew, fishing in the sea. He called out to them, Come with me and help me do my work. So they left their fishing nets and went with Jesus. Jesus, Peter and Andrew were walking along the beach together: three men walking along. (Open up the concertina people so you can see three.) Jesus saw James and John, going fishing in their boat. Come with me, Jesus called, and help me do my work. So they left their boat and went with Jesus too. Jesus, Peter, Andrew, James and John were walking along the beach, together: five men walking along. (Open up the concertina so you can see all five people.) Four men who are ready to help Jesus do his work. 4 Give each child a concertina set, showing them how to unfold it. Encourage them to draw faces on each person. Write Jesus on person 1, Peter on person 2, Andrew on person 3, James on person 4 and John on person 5. Fold the concertinas, so only Jesus is visible on top.

3 5 Retell the Bible story, showing the children how to unfold their concertinas as the characters are named. Allow space in the session for the children to use their concertina people to retell the story to you or to each other, if they wish. From LightLive: Bubbles Peter meets Jesus Prayer and praise Friends of Jesus No equipment 1 Just as Jesus chose Peter, Andrew, James and John to be his friends, so Jesus wants everyone in your group to be his friend. This action prayer will reinforce that Jesus asks each of the children and the leaders to be his friends. (It is not intended that children should make a response here but, if they do, respond positively and encouragingly.) 2 Ask all the children and the leaders to stand next to each other in a line. As you say each of their names in the prayer, ask them to take a step forward. Say the prayer below, mentioning all the children and leaders by name: Jesus, thank you that you asked Peter, Andrew, James and John to be your friends. Thank you that you ask each of us to be your friends. You ask Emma to be your friend, You ask Ajay to be your friend Help us all to be your friends. From LightLive: Bubbles Peter meets Jesus Structured Craft Fish A4 card, fish template from web download: Day 1 resource sheets page 12 (enlarge on a photocopier); 30 cm garden canes (sanded until smooth); shiny paper squares or wrapping paper; marker pen; sticky tape; scissors; glue stick; small white round stickers.

4 1. Cut out the fish from the A4 card, using the template. Write the verse on the tail with the marker pen. (Jesus said 'I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.' Matthew 4:19 CEV) 2. Cut lots of scales (approximately 3 cm x 3 cm) out of shiny paper. With the marker pen draw a large filled-in circle on the stickers for eyes. 3. Give each child a fish and, using the glue stick, help them cover the fish with scales. Let the children add an eye and then tape a garden cane to the back of each one. Adapted from Glitter and Glue Messy Craft Following feet You will need Roll of wallpaper (lining paper is best); thin paint in trays; bowls of water and baby bath; towels; chair; plastic sheeting. 1. Make sure that you cover your floor thoroughly and tape down plastic sheeting. Roll out a long strip of paper across your floor covering and tape it down. Place your bowls of water, chair and towels, with an adult, at one end of the paper and your trays of paint at the other. 2. Ask the children where they have seen footprints (sand, snow, bathroom etc) and remind them that it shows where someone has gone. 3. Ask a willing adult to volunteer to be Jesus to show the way. The adult takes off shoes and socks (rolling up trousers etc), stands in tray of paint with both feet and begins to walk across the paper. Point out the footsteps to the children showing where Jesus has gone. At the end of the paper, the adult steps into the bowl of water and sits on the chair, whilst the helper washes their feet clean of paint and dries them. 4. Ask the children to follow Jesus footprints one at a time. 5. When everyone who wants to has done so, look at all the footprints following Jesus and remind the children that Jesus asked the fishermen to follow him and he wants us to follow him, too.

5 If you can t use paint, you could draw round the children s feet, then cut them out and glue onto paper to make a trail of footprints. If the children have not yet heard the story, read Meeting Jesus from The Big Bible Storybook, page Make the scenery by spreading out the dark fabric and scattering with stones to create a shore. Use the blue fabric or paper to be the sea. Add two boats to the scene (toys or small cardboard boxes). Allow the children to choose play people to represent Jesus, Peter, Andrew, James and John. Encourage the children to use the figures to act out the Bible story. 3 Ask the children how they think the people felt to be Jesus friends. Emphasise that, just as Jesus chose Peter, Andrew, James and John to be his friends, Jesus wants to be our friend too.
