1 The message of this Psalm is that the vilest offender among God s people can appeal to God for forgiveness, for moral restitution and for the resumption of a joyful life of fellowship and service, if he comes with a broken spirit and bases his appeal on God s compassion and grace. 2 You will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:19) As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12) You have put all my sins behind your back. (Isaiah 38:17)

3 FORGIVENESS Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:7,10)

4 No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. (John.3:3) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Cor.5:17)

5 FORGIVENESS (i) to be rid of my guilt (ii) to be repentant, so that I won t be a repeat offender (iii) that my relationship with the one I have offended is restored

6 FORGIVENESS The blood of Jesus, [God s] Son, purifies us from all sin If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 Jn.1:7,9)

7 FORGIVENESS Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. (Psalm 51: 8, 11, 12)

8 FORGIVENESS Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your body. (1.Cor.6:19,20)

9 REPENTANCE The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. (Ps.51:17) Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. (Ps.51:13-15)

10 REPENTANCE May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar. (Ps.51:18,19)

11 Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD. And you forgave the guilt of my sin You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. (Ps.32:1,2,5,7)

12 God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows (Gal.6:7) We may look to God to enable us to live effectively with a bad decision, once we have acknowledged it for what it is, but we may not be able to undo what has been done, and we may have to live with the consequences of our own disobedience or foolishness.
