3 #readtogether Statistics and Quotes Academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someone s reading skill at the end of third grade. A person who is not at least a modestly skilled reader by that time is unlikely to graduate from high school. -National Research Council $46, The median annual income of a high school dropout in 2007 was $23,000 compared with $46,000 for someone who obtained a bachaelor s or higher degree. Students who cannot read proficiently are especially unlikely to obtain a post secondary degree, which is necessary for the kind of jobs that make America globally competitive in the age of information and communication technology $23, % of fourth graders are below grade level in reading In inner cities and poor rural areas, 68% of fourth graders are below grade level in reading. 0 Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare. Sixty-eight percent of fourth grade public school students in the United States scored below proficient reading level in % of fourth grade public school students in the United States scored below basic level in 2009 Approximately 50% of the nation s unemployed youth ages sixteen to twenty one are functionally illiterate, with virtually no prospects of obtaining good jobs. 68% of American s prison inmates are illiterate and 85% of all juvenile offenders have reading problems

4 #READTOGETHER Research-Based Reading Tips: Reading with A Child One-On-One When reading a book with a child, the most important things to do are to: 1. Read slowly 2. Have fun 3. Be enthusiastic, 4. Model/demonstrate a love for reading and for books. These elements alone will ensure a wonderful reading experience and strengthen a child s bond to books and literacy! Beyond these elements, some additional reading tips and strategies are listed below: Before Reading Preview the book by reading it to yourself ahead of time. Such advance reading allows you to spot material you may wish to shorten, eliminate, or elaborate on. If you don t have time to read it ahead of time, scan it to get a sense of it before you start reading aloud. Read the title of the book and discuss the illustration on the cover. What do you think this is going to be about? Plan an introduction find links to personal experiences. If you are reading a picture book, make sure the child can see the pictures easily. If you are reading a novel, position yourself where both you and the children are comfortable. During Reading The most common mistake in reading aloud whether the reader is a seven-year-old or a forty-yearold is reading too fast. Read slowly enough for the child to build mental pictures of what he just heard you read. Slow down enough for the children to see the pictures in the book without feeling hurried. Read with lots of expression, enthusiasm, and enjoyment. o Try creating different voices for different characters. o Vary your pace. Slow down to build up suspense and speed up during exciting scenes. o Don t be dull, or flat, or boring. Be loud, have fun, and laugh a lot. o Point to the pictures and say the names of important characters or objects.

5 Informally talk about the book as you read together. Ask questions that allow your child to express ideas and opinions about the pictures, characters, and words. Use a few (not all) of the questions below. o What do you think will happen next? o What do you want to happen next? o What do you think about...? o How would you feel if you were...? o What would you do if you...? o Why do you think the character did that? o What do you think is happening in the picture? o Has anything like this ever happened to you? Explain words and ideas you think your child might not understand. o It s OK if the child asks questions while you read. Stop and answer them. o If you are reading a picture book, spend time looking at and asking questions about the pictures. Connect the pictures back to the text. o Can Your Child Read A Little Bit? If your child is motivated and wants to, let them read to you as much as they are able. You could also take turns reading. Help your child with words she has trouble reading. Supply the correct word so she can move on and read the rest of the sentence. Be encouraging. Tell your child he is doing a good job. After Reading Briefly talk about the content of the story. Use a few (not all) of the questions below. These questions help children build reading comprehension skills. o Who was the main person in the story? Can you describe them? (Main Character) o What was the problem in this story? (Plot / Conflict) o What did the main person in the story do about the problem? (Plot / Conflict) o Did the main person make a good decision? Why/Why Not? What would you have done? (Personal Connection) o How did the story end? (Resolution) o Tell me about what happened in the story? (Retelling) Briefly talk about their opinions of the story. Use a few (not all) of the questions below. These questions help children build personal connections to books. o What was your favorite part of the story? Why? Feel free to read this part again. Better yet, ask the child to read it to you! o Should any of the people in the story done something different? What? Why? o Did this book remind you of other books you ve read? How was it the same? Different? o Did you like the story? Why/why not?
