FLEXIBLE ELECTRIFICATION CREATES NEW JUHA KARPPINEN, HELEN LTD Electrification in ports and vessels workshop, Scandic Grand Marina
Contents Helen quick facts and figures Energy system revolution The challenge of green energy Smart grids Empowering the consumers to prosumers Electrified ports and vessels as a flexible energy system Examples of added value from smart grid integration Demand response Reserve power Renewable generation How to participate in smart grid 2
Helen quick facts and figures Founded in 1909 as Helsingin Energia, incorporated in 2015 to Helen Ltd. 100% owned by city of Helsinki We serve over customers around Finland with: Electricity generation 4 own power plants in Helsinki, stakeholder in hydro, wind and nuclear power production. Finland s largest solar power plant in Suvilahti (Q2/2015) District heating and cooling CHP and tri-generation in power plants 11 additional thermal plants in Helsinki region Electric mobility 39 public EV charging points Helsinki area tram and subway service partner Partner in Helsinki s upcoming ebus infrastructure 3
The old fashioned power market Producers and consumers Grid operator Customer Energy production Flexible energy production follows load changes and compensates Money and energy flow only in one direction Energy optimization is possible only locally at each party 4
The energy system revolution Transition from fossil fuel energy sources to renewable energy sources Reducing emissions and fighting climate change Movement from large productions units to distributed resources 5
The energy system revolution - The challenge of green energy As we move towards CO2-free energy sources, we are reducing control and inertia of power generation Germany 2012 July average Germany 2013 daily production 6
Smart grids: Empowering the consumers to prosumers Maintaining renewable power system stability requires new kind of co-operation between parties Prosumer Grid operator Energy production Flexible consumption compensates for fluctuation in renewable production Prosumer loads and generation become valuable assets for the power system Money and energy flow bidirectionally Prosumer energy assets 7
Electrified ports and vessels as a flexible energy system Generation Loads Assets Flexible resources 8
Example: added value from smart grid integration - demand response Help support grid stability by prioritizing electrical loads Quick readiness for brief (~15 min) reduction in: Scheduled shore energy Cargo handling energy Warehouse heating/cooling energy Port inside and outside lighting energy for 1-2 times per month can bring an annual compensation of 1xx xxx euros / MW 9
Example: added value from smart grid integration - reserve power Produce power to the grid in times of need Readiness to generate intermittent (1-2 hours) electric power to the grid with Port backup diesel generators or batteries Ship auxiliary power generators (through shore connection) Electric vessel batteries (through shore connection) for 1-2 times per month can bring an annual compensation of xx xxx euros / 10
Example: added value from smart grid integration - renewable generation Help to increase renewable energy production Harbours have large open areas suitable for solar and wind power generation Local power generation avoids energy taxes and transmission tariffs (~60% of total energy cost) Even if energy is consumed locally, renewable certificates can be sold for added value Excess energy production can be sold to the markets Renewable energy commands a price premium 11
How to participate in smart grid? Energy flexibility can be sold to a balance responsible party (utility company) or demand response aggregator in the Finnish energy market Helen offers turn key solutions for smart grid integration We buy load flexibility, distributed generation and renewable generation We can help build all the necessary technologies We offer solar power plant solutions Built for customer Solar energy generation as a service Prosumer Helen Flexibility Flexibility National / Nordic energy market 12
